The MMA thread

Duffee took the fight on a weeks notice. They were desperate to get Alistair on the Dynamite card but he had already fought in the K1 GP earlier this month, so they only had a couple of weeks to throw a fight together for him.

Apparently the first choice was Bobby Lashley :D They just wanted to give Overeem a simple fight and a quick route to the title, he's the new Brock Lesnar I suppose.

Saying that I suppose the only legit HW available on such notice was Sergei, who lost @ K1 earlier this month but has also wrecked Overeem in the past. So he fought Mizuno on this card instead.

Was a little relieved that Saku's title challenge didn't end in another vicious beating but instead he ear fell off :(

Happy to see Takaya and Kawajiri win their fights

Mousasi looked brilliant vs Kyotaro

Still gutted for Aoki

Sorry, I loved seeing Aoki out like that. :D Exactly what he deserved after that farce of a first round.

Well the first was always going to go like that, although some of Aoki's antics were a bit OTT! Aoki's probably the last guy in MMA you'd pit against a K1 champion (Besides maybe Brock) so you have to give him credit just to step in and take that round. Credit to Jienotsu for the knee though

Edgar vs Maynard aside, UFC 125 tonight is a great card

Silva vs Vera
Gomi vs Guida
Kim vs Diaz
Leben vs Stann
Edgar vs Maynard

Prelims are nice too. Surprised to see the likes of Brown and Grispi in there

So he shouldnt accept a fight with those conditions. If you accept them you should respect them. Alright Aoki's striking is a real low point, but if he actually took the idea seriously and trained hard for the fight he might have been able to achieve a decent defence, instead of spending the majority of the round on the floor

I didn't get to watch this :( Getting hold of it now

Heard Maynard vs Edgar was a surprising highlight of the event

Cracking night all round. I think the result in the main event was probably fair. But one thing is for sure the rematch will not be as good. Maynard will stand off a lot more in the opening round

I really dislike Maynard, he comes across as a complete prick.

Anyway, I thought Edgar won that fight. Apart from the first round which I would have scored 10-8 to Maynard, I'd have given all the rest 10-9 to Edgar. The 3rd and 5th rounds were tight, but it was Edgar pressing the whole time and he got a good few takedowns. Maynard gassed after the first round. Fair play to Edgar, that was some recovery.

Maynard is boring, I find it very difficult to care about him... That said I think he's really unlucky with the whole situation. He has just as good a case for claiming victory as Edgar imo, hence the draw. And usually that leads to an immediate rematch. But now Pettis gets the next fight, it leaves Maynard in the lurch.

Doesnt matter if Edgar wins, loses or draws against Pettis, Edgar Vs. Maynard will be right after that. Either in an elimanator or another shot at the title

Apparently Dana has confirmed he is scheduling a rematch, leaving Pettis in the lurch for now.

I was surprised with the fight, I was expecting a dominant victory from Maynard but his performance was still quite impressive in the context of his career so far. Personally I came out with an improved opinion of him. I would have given the nod to Edgar though.

Gutted that Gomi lost to Guida :( Aoki, Saku and now Gomi all losing, three of my favourite fighters right there. Clay Guida is bloody annoying.

Stann vs Leben was a shock!

It was an irrelevant fight that Aoki was obviously gutted to accept, but did so as a favour to DREAM/FEG who were desperate to get him on the card (And it was to be a rematch with Gil).

This coming after he had to accept a fight with Sithoar to get on the DEEP 50 card.

It was an freakshow fight and Aoki treated it that way. In the end, he paid the price for his carelessness. It was demeaning to Jienotsu but that's a symptom of putting the fight together in the first place.

Hmm in the post fight presser, the guy standing in for Dana said that Dana had confirmed that Pettis is next. So I guess we'll see

Guida is a monster really, you wonder how far his style can take him.

I didnt really think much of Stann's fights in the past, but watching the countdown he made it clear he wanted to try and knock him out. So I was sort of expecting him to really go for it like he did. But I was probably still expecting Leben to win

Dana gave an interview afterwards confirming that he changed his mind and was giving Maynard the rematch (Skip to 3:45)

Looks like Strikeforce are finalizing an 8 man HW tournament to begin in February, as Fedor's contract disputes come to an end finally :D Apparently the first batch of fights will be

Fedor vs Bigfoot
Sergei vs Arlovski
Werdum vs Rogers
Overeem vs Barnett

Although I think only Fedor vs Bigfoot is officially confirmed at the moment so it could all change. But still, that is pure sex  Have to love a tournament

Supposedly the first round happens February 12th

:drool::drool::drool:

Although Fedor - Silva and Overeem - Werdum, with the two winners fighting was the only logical path in the division regardless of this tournament. Plus the HW title will be contested throughout the tournament, so Werdum could win it from Overeem and so on. And as far as I can tell the fights will be staggered over multiple events. At least the QF's will be. So they've basically just sexed up a years worth of fights by calling it a HW GP.

But still ... HW GP :drool::drool:

And Fedor fighting next month, potentially three times this year

I just came

Ye of little faith.

Suppose Barnett could fail another drugs test

So with Cain out injured for a long while, JDS will defend his #1 contendership against ... Brock, with the pair of them set to coach on the next season of TUF.

Not surprising to see them trying to fast track Brock to another title, but then JDS is about the only 'legit' HW the UFC have besides Cain these days and if you're not looking Brock you're looking Carwin, who's also coming off a loss, or Frank Mir, who's Frank Mir.

I think Brock has an okay chance against JDS. Although this is based on JDS being pretty much completely untested on the ground. Obviously, it could get ugly pretty quickly for Brock if JDS turns out to have the neccessary ground skills.

Wow, that's actually pretty awesome. I was worried that the UFC heavyweight division would basically be a non-issue for 2011. I didn't expect them to do this. I'll definitely see this season of TUF. Granted, I've seen every season of TUF, but I'll.. uh.. see this one even more.

Btw, it's not an interim belt. It's for #1 contender.

I'm disappointed, I was hoping for Sonnen vs Bisping or something. Or just Sonnen vs anyone. But now Sonnen's been charged with real estate fraud and is potentially facing jailtime :( One thing after the other with that fecking guy. It's a shame because he's so entertaining, he'd be priceless on TUF

But otherwise a TUF for FW's or BW's to build up the divisions post-merger would've been nice. Faber vs Cruz or something (Except Faber's fighting Wineland)

I'm not so sure Ekeke. I don't think JDS is as physically strong or as technically good as Cain. Brock would certainly put up more of a fight against him. Could be a very good fight. I'd back JDS if I had to.

Fairly low-key looking Strikeforce event starting soon. I'm hoping Herschel Walker does well, and I'll always be drawn to watching either Diaz brother fight on the off-chance that they lose brutally. Other than that, roll on UFC 126!

Interested in Roger Gracie, guy could be immense

Diaz vs Cyborg could be a classic. Just hope Diaz comes out on top

You watching this brotha? fecking awesome first round. I detest Diaz but he makes for great fights. Just hope he gets his head taken off now, but it looks like Cyborg is struggling with the pace.

Yeah, another great event from Strikeforce!

I love Diaz, he's fantastic. What a finish. Cyborg's leg kicks looks vicious but Diaz just fought straight through them, brilliant sub to finish it. The guy has to be about as entertaining a fighter as there is in the sport

Jacare fight was worrying, he looked to be on the verge of defeat that first round but recovered well. Lawlor did brilliantly to avoid the subs. Up until he got subbed, anyway

Gracie looked slick but not too sharp standing, which isn't surprising

Delighted to see Walker win too. He's probably not going to do much beyond the odd novelty bout against Lashley, Batista etc, but what an athlete. Have you seen a heavyweight called Daniel Cormier yet? Former Olympic level wrestler with impressive striking too. Works in some surprisingly good uppercuts and hooks for a wrestler who's new to the sport Could be a threat at heavyweight before long, although he's on the short side for a heavyweight. Looks like he's carrying quite a bit of body fat too, but when you compare a Fedor's gas tank to a Carwin's its pretty clear that being leaner doesn't always correlate with being better conditioned.

Yeah Walker looked great, guy with that kind of power is always going to be dangerous. Can't believe he's 48, he looks incredible. He and that other ex-footballer, St-Preux, look like they can do some damage in Strikeforce, but wonder how they'll handle a step up in competition. Good they're not being thrown in the deep end right away though.

I haven't seen Cormier fight yet, but I always hear great things about him and he sounds like a real workhorse. He fought like three times in a month earlier this year! Plus he's part of a great camp with Cain and Fitch and Kos and Phil Davis ... I heard he'll be on the Overeem vs Werdum card fighting to be sub for the tourny so who knows, he could end up against Fedor or someone soon. I listened to some interviews and he sounds like an intelligent guy who knows how best to develop

Can't believe the two favourite fighters I like are battling each other Silva vs Belfort, I am thinking it is a very close call this one
