The MMA thread

Throwing unfit names into a hat to save pay per view buys is a ridiculous way for a sport to be run.
We'll have Khabib v me for the title next

It's also to save the card and the fighters that have just went through a 9 week training camp and all the fans that have already bought it or are going to be at the event itself.

Offering it to Holloway was the worst thing they could have done in hindsight, everything else is outside of their control really.

These are ridiculous circumstances but there has to be a limit as to how close you can get to the fight before switching fighters.
He offered a 155 fight to the 145 champ who walks around at 180 who wasn't expected to be fit to return before July.
Fighters can still be paid, Dana and his slave contracts can go jump off a cliff.
Im sure most fans would be happy with refunds in these circumstances as well.

does anyone know what weight Holloway actually was when he got the call. Someone said 187, surely that can't be right, can it?

Bring in Brock to fight Jon Jones. Both on whatever drugs they choose.

It's the only thing that can save this card.

That seems a bit far fetched. Lets say he does want to avoid Khabib which i doubt, why go to all this trouble instead of just asking to fight someone else, go up or down a weight or just not fight at all?
He's already doing the latter.

They should start the PPV without an opponent Have Rogan and co speculate all night about who it's going to be. At the same time, have the NYPD tweet about a prison break.

Khabib enters the ring and the lights go off. "Notorius" starts blaring over the PA system and Conor gives it the Vince McMahon strut down to the ring.

I realise it's not a 1998 WWE event but a man can dream.

 Sounds good to me.

What a complete farce. From a stacked card to barely being able to put a show on in a couple of days.

4 fights off 48 hours before the show, unreal.

Haha!

Pettis asks for more money, rightfully, and the organisation say no. Sums them up..... @Oggmonster

They'd rather have no opponent for Khabib than pay someone who has given them some great fights over the years more money for taking the fight at the shortest notice I've ever heard of.

ugh.

It’s ridiculous. Pay him a bit more and get this over and done with. This is so stupid now it’s laughable.

The commission hasn’t helped them either surely they won’t be rushing back to NY. Is it really worth the ball ache?!

Conor's entire image would not allow for this. He would be forever known as McChicken from then on.

There is nowhere to hide in the lightweight division, Khabib is the best and will become the number one contender so asking to fight someone else, it would be a blatant puss out and ruin his talk of being the best as he would look like he is running scared. The Featherweight ship has sailed, and running to that division would again, make him look like he is terrified of facing Khabib, thus opting to fight smaller guys. The Welterweight division is full of guys who would literally murder him. as in he could die. Imagine Conor fighting Till (a 6 ft Scouser who walks around at 190lb), Wonderboy Thomson (who is better at him at striking), it would be horrific. He has had ample opportunity to defend any belt but seems to be trying very hard not to.

If Conor had announced his retirement at any point since making £100m against Floyd nobody would have thought he was a chicken, ffs mate. He's set for life and a two weight world champion.

None of these professional fighters are afraid of Khabib, some might be wary of the challenge of fighting his style but none of them are afraid and certainly not a top fighter like McGregor who's took a few risky fights in the past.

Just in the last week Ferguson was fighting Khabib, then Holloway, Pettis, Felder and Iaquinta wanted to or agreed to fight him. I don't believe any of the fighters at this level are afraid of fighting other guys. Some people like to build up these little narratives that X fighter is afraid of Y, that sort of nonsense is best left to the fighters shit talking each other.

As for McGregor having no options outside of Khabib he does (or did until yesterday), theres loads of options the UFC will basically let him fight whoever he wants. GSP, Holloway, Diaz trilogy, even another circus against Mayweather is possible.

Yeah any guy that gets in the octagon and fights is a bonafide nutter. Certainly something I could never do. Think its more a fear of the consequences of the result of the fight. Its not like losing a game of football where you can come back next week; lose in the fight game and your stock drops massively, you aren't as big of a draw and it affects your pay.

They have to go back there again and prove they can run a successful show. Lots of wounds to be licked beforehand, though.

It really has been an embarrassing shambles for the organisation, fortunately, MMA fans are used to the drama and feed into it now, which is their saving grace.

Can't even begin to imagine the amount of headless chicken running that's happening behind the scenes right now. As someone said earlier, this UFC event is 30:30 worthy in its own right by now!

What this guy said. The fear of the consequences and your stock. All those guys who jumped in to fight Khabib have literally zero to lose as they are 10-1 outsiders and were never expected to beat him. Its just a payday for them. Ferguson was forced to fight Khabib. He would rather fight McGregor now for the title but unfortunately, only Conor gets a title shot with less than 10 wins at lightweight division.

Being a 2 weight world champion with ZERO defences doesn't get you into the GOAT conversations and yes, he would look like a chicken having relinquished both titles without putting it on the line. Its one thing being the underdog (challenger) but its a different can of worms being the champ and expected to stay there.

Fans and fighters have already been exasperated by him not fighting MMA for 500 days. In fact, he didn't defend titles in his previous MMA organisation either. There is a pattern.

All of the Mcgregor fights you listed would involve him yet again, vacating his title, with no defences, thus he would look afraid to put it all on the line by defending, yet again!! So yeah, its fight Khabib or look afraid of risking having your title beaten away from you.

Not gonna lie, thatd be for the fecking ages. would love it.

Iaquinta doesn't win the title if he wins the fight but these last few days have been crazy, imagine the icing on the cake and he somehow beats Khabib

Shame Rose/Joanna has taken a huge backseat to all of the madness. Worth watching for that fight alone.

At least Iaquinta is on a 5 victory streak. Personally i gave him more chance than Pettis, Holloway and Felder.

fecking ridiculous this still a championship fight though.

I'm kind of glad because I didn't want khabib or Max to lose. Now I have my loyalties back in check.

But what happens to the real title if Al goes out there and wins?

Why is that last bit so haunting  “tell me.. where”

Also the 155lb division has pretty much become a joke. Tony Ferguson wins a title against the 7th ranked guy in the division, Kahbib might win a title against a guy who isn’t even in the top 10. I mean they obviously tried to clean it up with Tony and Kahbib but really until they fight, or one just loses or even Connor fights it just a complete farce.
