The MMA thread

She can feck off. White already said she would never headline an event again, and rightfully so.
Have to cut her some slack. I'm no nunes fan, in fact, I quite dislike her actions in the lead up to this fight but she's not exactly known for dropping out of fights. She must have been feeling worst for wear.

This fight will be anticlimactic...Jones will go through Cormier easily.

Jones at his best, probably. There's questions to be asked about him right now though. He's had one fight in over two and a half years and that was to be perfectly frank a bang average performance by his standards against OSP after a layoff. Jones is coming off of yet another year layoff and has absolutely huge amount of pressure coming into this fight. I struggle to bet against Jones but there's no doubt he will have to be at his best because Cormier is legitimately great.

One of my favourite rivalries maybe of all time in MMA. The build up has already been insanely good and will only get more intense over the next few weeks. The entire card looks outstanding on paper.

I would have Cormier as the favourite for that fight unless Jones has been doing some serious tune-ups (vicious sparring) in the gym. He looked poor the last time back against a much worse opponent after a shorter time out than compared to now. To then go straight into it with the champion of the division, who genuinely hates him and will be more amped up (sensing this is his chance to have the upper hand) than ever, who is in octagon condition with zero ring rust to deal with, is huge.

Jones will have to channel the mindset he had as a debutant to come out there fresh and ready for the onslaught, and that's assuming he hasn't slowed down himself during the lay off.

With all things being equal, Jones is the rightful champion and would beat Cormier, but given the above, he really is going to have to have the perfect return to match up with him and that is much easier said than done.

Didn't Dana say the same thing about Jones? I'm surprised Dana managed to crawl out of Conor's arse long enough to even comment on it.

It's so unprofessional if she didn't feel right and didn't want to fight that's fine but she kept it to herself why not tell them weeks ago when she said she wasn't feeling right? Khabib rightly got slated for his problems by fans and she deserves to as well. Shevchenko has had a training camp which cost her money, she's missed out on some decent exposure of headlining a PPV, she's had to travel there etc. People get injured and ill but she's saying she knew for weeks so they should let people know.

Do feel bad for Bisping. Dude's been a warrior for the UFC for a while now. Can't blame him for wanting his last shot at that big, elusive payday. An outstanding Whittaker victory really was the worst possible outcome for him.

I like Bisping and have defended him plenty of times in the past but he's had plenty of good stuff happening to him courtesy of the UFC, they don't treat him shit. They essentially built a whole market in the UK and parts of Europe round him and fed him some easier fights which helped build his image (and benefitted them of course), they let him headline a PPV in his home town against someone who should never even be close to a title shot and they have paid him well in the past. Again I like the guy and hope he makes big money but it's not like he's dead hard done by.

Let the fun begin....

Best promo they've done in a long time (maybe ever.) Really is a good promotion, will surely do a million + buys if they both make it. If it does Tyron Woodley could potentially be a huge winner from it. He fought on 205 getting PPV points, he'll fight on this getting PPV points in a fight which matches his style perfectly and he is potentially fighting GSP which he will get PPV points for and again a million + buys, not a bad year for him.

Yeah she probably was to be fair but again she knew beforehand so why not tell them initially? I've never been in the situation so don't know what the pressure is like for her in that position and I do get the impression the UFC and Dana may not be brilliant when he thinks you've messed him about but she did everything but fight and didn't say anything til the very last minute. It's hugely unprofessional. SHe won her title against Miesha Tate who was ill and had an awful weight cut but still fought.

Didn't Dana say the same thing about Jones? I'm surprised Dana managed to crawl out of Conor's arse long enough to even comment on it.

Jones is a huge name, the UFCs 2nd biggest behind Conor (if Ronda is retired) so he was always going to headline a card unless Conor was on it. Nunes simply isn't that big of a name her last fight people bought cos of Ronda not her and even this one had some recognisable names on it. It's feasible that it's true Dana won't let her headline again. I know he gets some stick and notoriously lies but when a microphone is stuck on your face straight away you're bound to say some stupid stuff. I'd rather he is like he is than get some dull no personality personally.

As for the event I'm glad Whittaker won, I said the other day something about Romero I don't like but fair play to him being gracious in defeat. I'm sure he will come back as an explosive 3 round fighter but at his age I'm not sure if his ship has sailed somewhat to be a champion. As Raoul points out above there is the likes of Rockhold and Mousasi waiting in the wings and being younger the UFC will surely they fight for a title than Romero. They're probably quite happy recently they have Whitaker and Holloway as the champions, 2 young guys who speak English (which they always like) and have potential big fan bases really especially Whitaker.

Main other note from the weekend is gaethje has potential to be a good draw. The LW division is stacked without Conor at the moment with Ferguson, Khabib, Gaethje, Barboza, Lee, Alvarez, Poirier. I hope the UFC can capitlize on it.

Didnt realize she knew from weeks prior, in which case, I agree. She was very unprofessional.

Fair play mate. Benefit of hindsight with me I suppose (didn't log on at weekend) cos at the press conference I thought Dana was doing his usual shite of throwing them under the bus. I'm sure deep down he is still somewhat annoyed the Ronda cash cow of that division ended.

He has no incentive change his mind about Nunes as she isn't a draw, whereas Jones is one of the biggest draws they have behind Mcgregor.

Agree. He better keep Jones happy. Ronda has left and McGregor could quite easily follow suit after his Mayweather money. Jones will be one of the the biggest name on their roster soon.

Sunna "Tsunami" Davíðsdóttir just beat homegirl Kelly D'Angelo impressively. On the fast track to the UFC and that would make her the 2nd Icelander and the first Icelandic woman.

Mousasi might be the worst loss yet. What the hell are these owners playing at.

They seem to value fighters based on their PPV marketability. Gegard was probably a bit aloof for their liking. Idiotic move as he's only going to do well in Bellator and make it more attractive for more UFC fighters to defect.

Rory McDonald is the worst so far. But mousasi a close 2nd

I breathed a sigh of relief last week when Joe Duffy re signed

Rory was a big loss and probably the bigger name after the war with Lawler. The fact that Rory was coming off 2 losses and Gegard is on a 5 fight win streak though maybe gives him the edge. Either way the UFC should have offered a suitable package to keep both.

On the one hand I know competition is good for the fighters, but on the other I don't want mma to end up in a boxing situation where the best fighters are in different promotions and they barely ever fight each other. We're a while away from that yet but if it keeps up then we may end up there.

Likewise, they deserve the chance to earn more. But really fans will suffer If Bellator splits up the best fighters

It might all come to an end if UFC simply start paying more. Also the reebok deal ends in 2 years. So they have a chance to make changes then

I'm also hoping the fighters will see Bellator for what it is, as to me it's a shit show with no consistent divisions

Think Charlie wards UFC career will have been short

Only chance he gets another go will be down to McGregor

Props to Rountree, he's a legitimate prospect. You can visibly see the improvements on a fight-by-fight basis. I'm a fan.
