The MMA thread

Reading through and may be slightly late to the party but whilst I agree with the sentiment of Bellator being good for the sport and competition I just don't see it on the back of that card really. It was a few good moments but for me it just wasn't a great card, each to their own I suppose but there seemed to be some fundamental errors in matchmaking. The decision to book Pico against Freeman was shocking, he's the guy you've talkedu p as the next best thing so bring him in slowly and feed him some poor level fighters like they did (and continue to do) with MVP. The Bader vs. Davis fight was terrible and I wasn't massively into Sonnen vs. Wanderlei personally but each to their own. The one saving grace for the card was Chandler will have an immediate rematch due to the freak injury.

Re the ex UFC fighters they've signed I think in large it's just not worked for them.

Roy Nelson - Won 3 of his last 10 fights and has looked pretty poor in the majority of them.

Letourneau - Lost her last 3 fights, albeit she will be at a different weight class.

Phil Davis - Pretty boring uneventful fighters

Bader - Decent signingg but he'd lost easily to Jones and DC and got annihilated by Johnson. Now Bellator champion (in an awful fight) and I can't see there being huge interest in him due to the dullness of that fight and others in the past.

Henderson - 1-2 record in Bellator, had potential and still does to be a good signing for them but it's a poor start.

McDonald - Should build the company round him, best fighter they've got and has a personality to go with it.

I just think it's hard to gain ground. I saw some comparisons re football and divisions and it's hard. I'd say if the UFC is Chelsea then Bellator would be similar quality to a poorer team in the league like Swansea or Liverpool, few good players but still plenty of shite in there to. The problem for me is they are that far behind the UFC at the moment and have so much ground to make up that if they ever get to that level you'd have to think the UFC would of sussed out where there problems are and adapt. I know people like to bash them and they make plenty of mistakes including fighter pay and massively underselling to Reebok but they've done plenty of amazing things in the sport and you'd have to back them to get it right sooner or later.

The problem with promotion of fighters from the UFC is a valid one as well. They do rely heavily on trash talk and WWF antics to sell fights but at that moment it is what is working for them. I don't mind it personally but it seems to wind others up and that's fine everyone is entitled to an opinion but it is working for them so they will stick to it. Equally it's pretty easy promotion they just stick the fighters in a room and let them argue. Bellator is hardly great at promotion either, in fact in the UK in particular they are a disaster it's like they don't want the market. They don't even air fights live including 1 that was in London! It's ridiculous really.

I saw some of the UFC last night, shame that Yamasaki ruined the main event. I think Lee is a solid level fighter and has managed to get a bit of interest on the back of his antics so fair play to him. BIg takeaway is Hendricks is done, except to see him in Bellator sooner or later is my guess.

What a farce. Yamasaki stops the fight stops the fight without a tap.

I haven't seen it yet, but if the ref didn't make this call what was the other possible outcomes? Was Chiesa was close to tapping/passing out or escaping?

He didn't tap and he wasn't put to sleep, so he was technically still alive in the fight. Yamasaki just assumed he was trying to tap when he wasn't.

Ah right cheers, really bad call then.

Id like to think otherwise but the ending (plus the stupid carry on in the press conference) makes me think it was something UFC cooked up to get people talking in an otherwise not marquee ppv. Lot of things against that from happening admittedly but still.

Of course it could have just been a really really bad call from the ref in which case why isn't he fired?

I don't know who employs these refs. They certainly don't work for the UFC as White would've fired half of them ages ago.

I am pretty sure he was close to going limp, like my dick when I jump into an ice bath but because he hadnt tapped, you couldn't be 100% now Chiesa going round saying he was working on an escape, which takes away from Lee's victory slightly.

Just watched the main card now

Real shame it ended that way. I think he wasn't tapping but was going out cold

I've only just recovered from Justine kish crapping hereself

he actually made weight in his middleweight debut, and bragged afterwards how easy it was

He missed weight in his final 2 welterweight fights. So it is 3 out of his last 4

Since winning his title he has gone on to lose 5 out of 7

Woodley defending against Maia at 214 then apparently the winner fighting GSP.

Whatever people think about the guy he's the most active champion and has now fought the Number 1 contender 3 times in a row. Also fought on a McGregor card and now the Jones vs. DC card making the PPV points. It's a good match up for him to I reckon he beats Maia so if he faces GSP he will be making some money in his fights! Fair play to the guy.

I agree. Just wished that Maia had more time to prep. Maybe he did, and it was a late announcement?

Shevchenko sounds mighty confident....

This feels a lot like Holm-Rousey where the champ seemed a bit agitated and the challenger was calm and composed.

Bisping picking Whitaker over Romero

There's something I don't like about Romero (maybe the fact he's a dodgy history with "cheating" tactics) so I'd hope Whittaker does beat him, can't see it myself though.

Another frustration is I'm in the process of moving house and cancelled Sky/BT Sport etc so won't even be able to watch!!

I agree that he's a bit dodgy. That said, he's a world class wrestler, as well as a very good boxer so I can see how Bisping wouldn't want to fight him. The only downside to his game is the possibility of gassing in later rounds, which Bisping correctly identifies as a way Whitaker can win.

There are times when Romero just stand alone and does nothing. He did it against Weidman, Jacare and Machida. Whitaker needs to take advantage at these times whilst avoiding Romero burst of offense.
