The MMA thread

Fights are scored by rounds, and Woodley lost 3 out the 5.

The 10-8 in round 4 got him the draw.
Which I've stated multiple times in this thread that it's an unbelievably dated and retarded point scoring system.

In rounds that are difficult to score, judges are forced to give the round to either fighter, which is completely ridiculous. They should be able to score rounds a draw aswell.

How anyone can watch that fight and think it was a draw really is beyond me. Forget about the stupid scoring system and open your eyes.

Yeah I didn't see it like that. The first round was 2 minutes of circling each other, then 2 and a half minutes of Woodley stuck in half guard unable to land anything to the head, then in the last 30 seconds he landed 3 or 4 elbows which cut him. Blood made it look worse than it was.

Compare Khabib's ground and pound that same night vs Johson, that's what a true 10-8 round looks like.
Erm... Woodley stuck in half guard? Are you sure you don't mean Thompson stuck in half guard without a hope of getting out? If that round would have gone on for 20 minutes I don't see wonderboy escaping it for the rest of the fight. That's how dominant Woodley was on the ground.

It was very close to a draw but not quite imo. Woodley's dominant periods were sufficiently overwhelming to where it they tipped the balance in his direction. Not sure if I felt this at the time, but after watching the entire fight again this week, I definitely do.

Agree 100%

I recommend people that think it was a draw to rewatch the fight. Thompson landed one significant kick in the last 5 seconds of the fight. Did nothing of note to warrant a draw compared to the times Woodley had him in trouble.

I think yeah Woodley won if it was strike force but adhering to UFC rules it is a draw. Yes the scoring system is stupid but it is there and that's how they got to a draw. We can only talk about that fight with the 10 point must system, is not like they're going to change judging criteria any time soon, which in fairness is a different debate altogether.

That's another debate entirely though isn't it? It's like me claiming I don't like the current offside rule and discluding goals from the game that were allowed to stand, then declaring a match a draw rather than a win after it's over.

The scoring system might be shit but it's the one we have and when discussing who won it's ludicrous to invent your own scoring system and then declare your winner based on that.

Also the fighters know the rules going in so they have to plan their strategy around that, it effects how fighters use/conserve their energy, the risks they take etc.

What you've effectively done is thrown Wonderboy into a fight where he's told there's a certain set of rules, and then after the fight telling him "actually you didn't win at all you didn't do enough damage despite winning on the scorecards according to the rules you were given before stepping in the cage". I think he'd question why he wasn't told before the fight that there is no round by round scoring, and he'd have certainly have fought differently if he knew that.

Yes Wonderboy was stuck on bottom but in the past I don't think we've regularly seen seen 10-8s awarded for laying on people. The 3 or 4 damaging headstrikes came in the last 30 seconds after his leg was no longer trapped in half guard, it wasn't a sustained beatdown such as Khabib vs MJ.

They can score 10-10 but it's just rare they use them. Also wouldn't sit well with fans where we'd see a lot draws under the current system with for example 10-9, 9-10, 10-10 scoring in a 3 round fight.

What scoring system are you using? Your own or the official?

I rewatched it and scored it according to how fights are scored in the UFC.

Under different scoring criteria I'm sure Woodley wins, but we're not really in a position from behind our keyboards to decide who won, lost or retained a world title by inventing our own rules.

I'm going by the official result of the fight being called a draw. BTW, the scoring used by judges is always subjective and open to interpretation by the humans observing the fight. Realistically, the fight could've been a draw or a slight Woodley win.

@Dominos

45 strikes, 1 takedown and top control VS... 1 strike.

if that's not a clear 10-8 for Woodley in the first round, then i don't know what it is.

if the judges would have score it right the first time, we wouldn't be discussing this now. It would be Maia (or GSP) fighting for the title.

Have you watched the round recently?

If the bell rang at 4 minutes 30, the stats would probably read something like 40 strikes to 1, and I don't think there's a person on earth who would argue a 10-8 round, which shows you can't judge a round off (often inaccurate) stats. Woodley was hitting the body to stay active because he couldn't land a strike to the head for 2 minutes 30 of the 3 minutes they spent on the ground. Watch Khabib vs MJ that same night and then watch round 1 of this, and see the difference.

doesn't matter if Khabib can do it better,

The point of a 10-8 round is one opponent significantly dominates the round, and that's what happened. Wonderboy did absolutely nothing in that first round.

and yes, i've been watching fights the whole week... personally thought it was closer when i watched live, but seeing the replay a couple times, i think it was more clear victory for TWoodley.

this is Thompson after the first 5 minutes... didn't even knew where was his corner.

Reports saying Khabib brought to hospital. Nothing confirmed. He did look rough in the interviews.

fecking Khabib he better get to that scale and make weight... fat bastard.

edit: it seems best case scenario we might still have a fight but Khabib probably gonna miss weight, so no title for him, even if he wins.

Theres always a stage when extreme weight cuts catch up with a fighter and he just cant do it anymore. RDA being one.
Looks like Tony v Conor next since Tony is being gifted the belt win or lose.
Khabib winning and bitching in the background would be horrendous for the sport with the Conor being protected narrative going into full swing

If Khabib pulls out he can feck off. Conor shows up and fights, takes short notice fights without needing to and backs up his shit talk. Khabib can't even get through 2 or 3 fights in a row. Can't be the 'real lw champion' if you can't show up when it matters.

UFC simply needs more weight classes.
We have Rogan tweeting about the need to move forward with fighters staying in their own weightclass like he's an all knowing sage while fighters etc are ignorant to the risks. As if fighters are forced to cut weight.
The differences in weight classes is ridiculous. A lot of fighters are either too big or too small for their division.

well, officially off.

feck off khabib mmothercuker

ps. Vannata offering himself to fight Tony... but i hope not! i want Groovy to beat the crap out of that swedish Teymur guy.

Too late for anyone else (e.g. Nate Diaz) to step in I guess?

Where are all the "Khabib is running" memes? Pretty sure they appeared about 15 seconds after Conor last fought!

@Dominos, I get that the scoring system is a whole debate entirely but even to the current set of rules Woodley could have easily won that fight with a 10-8 in the first round. One jusdge seems to have scored it like this aswell so I don't understand how you're so surprised others think the same way.
Even the 3 rounds wonderboy won weren't really that clear. He had the octagon control but Woodley even landed the more significant strikes in those..
Also..

Look man, dunno if you're a fan of Thompson or not, I too think he's an incredibly exciting fighter but he got found out that night and I'm willing to wager it'll be even worse tomorrow when Woodley really goes for the finish.

The first fight really just wasn't as close as I remembered.[/QUOTE]

Conor called this and was accused of ducking Khabib.
I honestly want to see his medical records. He could have had a bad cut and camp and simply isnt feeling it, Tony even commented on his conditioning yesterday.
Khabib loses and he might not see a title shot for a while. He withdraws and allows Tony first crack at Conor and relies on his undefeated streak to pressure for the winner.
Or he can beat some sheep farmers and pad his record to 50-0 and refocus on the title

Khabib was definitely shitting himself. Maybe his father not being with him affected too much.

what a fecking shame to miss El Cucuy in action.

Well that's fair enough if you think Woodley won under the current scoring system. It can be argued, I personally would have scored it a draw. It just always baffles me when I (regularly) hear people discuss who won a fight and make no reference to how they actually scored it, as if they're oblivious to the points system in place.

I'm not the one claiming it's ludicrous or laughable that Woodley won, it's others who seem to think it's laughable that the fight can be scored a draw, when it's perfectly reasonable.

Very clever. It was just to make a point about stats, I think taking the full 5 minutes into account (obviously), it was a 10-9.

I think we'll see a hell of a lot of 10-8s if that's now the standard. It was 2 fighters circling each other for half the round not landing a strike, one lands a takedown half way through the round, has some top control but can't land a shot to the head, then manages to land 3 or 4 good ground and pound strikes before the bell. The round didn't strike me as anything out the ordinary from what we see every fight night.

He broke his nose, didn't he? At least it looked like it.

Khabib is unreliable, even Conor said as much. Wonder what his fans will say now
