The MMA thread

I can maybe give them a pass on this one even if it is hard to argue against the fact that they have a legit contender in Romero and then Jacare too. Interested to see how GSP does. If he beats Bisping for the title (which I'd say he will if he's anywhere near the level he was prior to leaving, big if though considering he's had over three years off) then I wouldn't rule out the GSP/Silva 'superfight' finally happening which would probably piss a lot of people off if they went with that and overlooked the likes of Romero and Jacare again. Time will tell, just can't rule out Bisping after how he's pulled out these last three wins.

Crazy thing is that Bisping has had so much shit from people over the years yet by the end of the year it's possible that in an 14-18 month span he'd have beaten Luke Rockhold, Dan Henderson, Anderson Silva and GSP. Nobody would have predicted that.

wow i hope Bisping beats the crap out of him, and enough money to stop avoiding the contenders.

I think he could retire after this one if he wins. Beat two Goats, avenged two losses, won the world title and has a great career being a broadcaster. Staying around would be pointless in my opinion. He is 38 as of yesterday and his career has been a list of contenders, legends and up and comers. Nothing else will be needed to prove his legitamacy as a hall of famer.

yeah, that's a big possibility. He just turned 38, and has received a lot of damage over the years, i wouldn't blame him.

get out at the top of the game is everyone's dream. But i would miss him... he is good fun. I hope he fights till 40 at least.

I half expected this news tbh. It's unfair on Romero and the other top contenders like Jacare but eh I'm willing to give UFC a pass on this one you just have to accept that the UFC are going for the big money fights. And I love GSP he's definitely one of the greatest of all time and it's nice to see him back. Also I agree with @shabz I think Bisping will retire after this if he wins. Big payday for both of them it should do a lot of PPV buys and if they do the fight in Canada it will sell a shit load of tickets.

I wonder what they're going to do with Romero and Jacare now. Probably a rematch to determine the next #1 contender.

They can't bring GSP back and not have him chase the title. It's one of those tough shit moments that come along every so often

i love watching UFC so much, but i hope the company has a quick death so it can reborn as what it should be.

Dana white some time ago:

“Yoel Romero’s been floating out there a long time waiting for a title shot. Bisping wanted to do that grudge match with Dan Henderson. It was going to be Dan Henderson’s last fight. I’ve always shown Henderson the respect I felt he deserved. He’s a guy who’s fought everybody out there. So we did that fight and he’s got to defend his title now against the No. 1 contender,” White revealed on the latest “UFC Unfiltered” podcast.

“If you look at what Romero did to Chris Weidman, he absolutely deserves the shot.”

lying cnut...

GSP probably demanded a title shot on his comeback. UFC have to balk because with Rhonda's downfall and Jones being Jones, Conor now has them by the balls as the only huge attraction. They need more 'money' fighters. In some ways serves them right because their promotion of some great fighters has been shit. They completely shafted Nunes in the run up to the Rhonda fight for example.

This is always certainly down to GSP demanding the shot as part of his negotiations to return

UFC know they need him now so gave in. And GSP v Bisping will have a lot of buys

I'm delighted he is back, but would have prefered him to return to his normal weight class

It's no.1 bullshit
GSP never wanted any piece of MW when Anderson was champ but now can just return and get a MW title shot? Psshh

This has IMG written all over it. With diminishing stars left in the UFC, they are forced to create weird fights to make PPV money.

Well yeah, of course it is

I am surprised at this though

If it was the welterweight I would have thought fair enough. He never actually lost his belt

But this seems fairly odd
Don't get me wrong, it's a fight I'd love to see aswell. I just think that someone shouldn't get a title shot on his comeback.

Something like Nick Diaz vs GSP both on their returns (now there's a big moneyfight) and the winner of that one getting a shot at the belt, would have been a bit more fair to the other fighters imo.

I can understand people being pissed off with the UFC for making these kind of fights but I'll never get why they get annoyed with the fighter? The same people who do tend to complain the UFC doesn't give fighters enough money so when someone (Bisping) makes the most of an opportunity and stands to make millions people make digs at him again. Why? You can't have it both ways. Surely you'd applaud people for wanting to make the money. UFC 204 did 290k buys. GSP is a huge draw and would probably pull in close to 1million PPV buys on his return. If Bisping makes $1 per PPV on top of his pay he'd could potentially be tripling his money which is to good to turn down. No fighter would say no to the fight, whether it was Rockhold, Romero, Jacare or Weidman. I do sympathise with them (especially Romero) but it's not really Bisping's fault, he's just accepting fights he got offered. If anything you could put more blame on GSP as he's the one who probably wanted a title shot and picked Bisping over a potential fight with someone like Woodley.

Nick Diaz hasn't won a fight in 5 years and turns down any opportunity to fight again apparently, he';s already been schooled by GSP recently as well. Again I can see why people criticise the UFC booking (stuff like Henderson title shot) but it does seem odd people then shoe horn fighters they prefer into big fights. It shows how hard it probably is for the UFC to make everyone happy.

A great way for Bisping to retire, even if he gets the win he's done so much for the UFC and he is getting on, retiring a champ after being Silva, GSP, Rockhold. Dream come true for him...and if he loses, it's fecking GSP so fair do's.

Man, just rewatched Woodley vs Wonderboy 1 and I'm so hyped for Saturday evening right now! I remembered it as a great fight, but how Wonderboy survived that 4th round I'll never know! Such a great matchup, hopefully it'll be just as good as their first meeting.

Such an awesome first fight, so tough to call the rematch. Khabib/Ferguson is just as interesting too, two huge fights there. Hopefully somebody going to sleep in the Hunt/Overeem fight too. Really hoping we get a good performance from Rashad as well, desperately needs it at this point in his career.

Gadelha/Karolina (not even attempting to spell her second name ) set for 212 alongside Aldo/Holloway. Maia/Masvidal set. Gustafsson/Teixeira set for Stockholm. Some great fights coming up Cormier/Johnson 2, Miocic/JDS 2, Namajunas/Waterson, Weidman/Mousasi. Of course then there's the incredible Manuwa/Anderson card in the UK

Had forgotten about Gastelum/Belfort next weekend, should be a great fight.

Watched the fight the other day aswell. I remembered it being more even but Woodley clearly won imo. Thompson didn't rock him once while Woodley almost had the ref stopping the fight on a few different occasions. And then there was that guillotine choke where he almost decapitated wonderboy with for about half a round.

That's the only reason Woodley won imo - the 3rd ? round where he nearly finished him and almost surely won the round 10-8.

I had forgotten about that as well, I think another ref could've easily stopped the fight on another day. Wonderboy was down and being punched at will by Woodley at some point in the 4th.

I think Woodley is still the favourite on Saturday cause he'll be better prepared for Wonderboy's stance and kicking, he knows what he can expect now and he has the ability to knock him out at once (think he did that to Lawler?). Either way, intriguing matchup and will hopefully be the icing on the cake after Ferguson vs Khabib.

Yeah, I think it will be a fairly easy win for Woodley.

Ferguson vs Khabib will be more interesting. I see Khabib winning that one but if he can't manage to take Ferguson down he might be in trouble.

I really want Khabib and Reem to win so its a safe bet that they'll lose.

I think the Wonderboy V Woodley fight will be much closer than people think. Wonderboy was pulling his attacks a lot in the first fight, if he goes in for more power shots early, it could give wood somrthing to think about, having said that, Woodley needs to utilise his wrestling more this time around. I think it will be very close.

Khabib and Ferguson is the most intriguing fight. The 5 rounds helps Tony for sure. We saw how he was in the 5th against RDA at altitude, so this will be walk in the park. Question is, can he handle Khabib extremely offensive ground game? And will that wear him down, having to fend off wave after wave from the bottom... Khabib is a bit wreckless on the feet though so tony can catch him there. So many possibilities, I can't wait.

My boy Reem seems destined to lose. He's fighting a guy that's extremely difficult to stop who can also end the fight with one punch. Add that to the fact that Reem has a chin made of glass, it spells trouble... Hope I'm wrong here.

So excited for this one.

Khabib saying the UFC fixed the Conor / Alvarez fight.
Is he mentally all there? This is an honest question. Do we know if he has a mental disorder?

I think Tony wins via submission after beating the crap out of Khabib.

And i got Wonderboy for the rematch. I think he lost the first one, but i can see him doing the right adjustments for this second chance.

If Khabib leaves himself open at the start of the fight like he did against Johnson, he could be in trouble. But I think he will fight smart and take this on decision

But I agree, wonderboy to win. I reckon he will finish Woodley

I thought he suggested Dana White set up the Conor/Alvarez fight - as in, he allowed Conor to skip divisions and fight the champ of another division.

He called the whole thing fake. He didnt understand how Alverez fell down after a few slaps and it was a fake fight.
I think Tony lights him up on Saturday and after comments like that it could be a long time before he's back in this position again

It will be a good fight. There's no one better on the ground than Khabib in all of MMA, so if it goes there he will win. If its kept standing up then Ferguson has the advantage, especially with the reach disparity.

Fights are scored by rounds, and Woodley lost 3 out the 5.

The 10-8 in round 4 got him the draw.

It was a draw at the end, although most thought Woodley did enough to win based on the 10-8 round.
Eh? To win he either had to have won 3 rounds, in which case the 10-8 was irrelevant, or have two 10-8 rounds. He won two rounds with one 10-8, hence the draw.

I think some people scored round 1 10-8 to Wood but I disagree. I thought the draw was the right call.

Yeah I didn't see it like that. The first round was 2 minutes of circling each other, then 2 and a half minutes of Woodley stuck in half guard unable to land anything to the head, then in the last 30 seconds he landed 3 or 4 elbows which cut him. Blood made it look worse than it was.

Compare Khabib's ground and pound that same night vs Johson, that's what a true 10-8 round looks like.
