The MMA thread

At the beginning of the second round, Rico throw a knee to the shoulder of the other dude while on the clinch and injured him (elbow or Shoulder), forcing him to retire.

Makdessi vs Vannata next.

Sounds like I got lucky dipping out on that one!

Pettis' career seems to be in full reverse since losing the title to RDA. Now he's headed back to LW, probably as the number 5 or 6 ranked fighter in the division.

Agreed, he hasn't looked the same since RDA. I think he was feeling the pressure of trying to produce a highlight reel moment every fight.

Dumb question time, what's the reasoning behind not having the fighters weigh-in the day of the fight? Would surely help prevent these extreme weight-cuts no?

Pettis is a perfect case study of the Joe Rogan hype train. Spoke about him like he was a Spartan, but in reality, he's an ok fighter.

Glad for Holloway, give that man his shot!

It doesn't and they end up fighting dehydrated which is more dangerous. It is why in boxing it changed from the same day to the day before many years ago.

Not true. Pettis lived the hype under the pre-USADA era. Obliterating Bendo, Cerrone, Melendez, Lauzon isn't an easy feat.

It completely turned around for him post-USADA similar to Belfort, JDS, Machida among many others.

USADA caused Pettis to go from Showtime to Nickelodeon*

That's my point

Whilst I agree with the sentiment Pettis has looked worse following USADA I don't think can tar everyone who's in a bad run of form fighting with the "It's obviously a USADA thing." I agree Rogan over rated him as he does with plenty of fighters (Before usually shitting on them saying they're overrated on his podcast afterwards.) Pettis though has had a set of pretty hard fights, RDA, Eddie Alvarez (which was a close fight) and Holloway.

I'd like to back up this argument. Pettis got a lot of buzz for some spectacular moments (mostly related to his kicks) and went on a bit of a tear for 5 or 6 fights but lets not forget he got beat by Clay Guida in his UFC debut and got the belt by beating Henderson* (a tough guy but reasonably easy to hit and who is now struggling a little in Bellator).

The division moved on and some of the fighters didn't. Pettis lost three straight decisions to RDA (a fighter that was then declared near immortal by many for a few fights afterwards), Alvarez (a man who later went on to win the title) and Barboza (an awkward match-up for anyone and a dude great with his feet as well) it's not like he fell off a cliff. Holloway is the first fighter to put him away and you could argue that events conspired against Pettis to make that more probable (early broken hand). I actually think the RDA fight was before USADA stepped in to the UFC and bar this last fight, that was the one where he was most dominated. He hasn't coped well against good wrestling and it is no surprise his losses tend to have come in fights where he has been taken down repeatedly (Guida, RDA and Alvarez all employed this tactic).

It is just a really competitive division with very few (if any) stand outs, that is why Pettis dropped down a weight and why the belt has been moving around so freely for quite a long time now. We'll see what Conor does about that.

*I actually really like the lad so it is not meant to sh*t on him, he makes for good fights and is a warrior.

Thing with Pettis is that other fighters found a solution to his puzzle but he can't seem to change.

Also, training with CM Punk probably hasn't helped much. :D

I think he still has it in him to be a contender, but he needs to find again the hunger to work harder for it.

The guy has a lot of money, businesses... he could retire today and live a nice life without getting punched in the face ever again, so maybe his head is not 100% in the sport.

At only 29 years old, he has still time to evolve his game, but yeah, not sure he really is putting the work necessary (specially without the help of pre USADA stuff). Hopefully he give it a proper go once again.

With Conor out of the picture, the path forward is clear.

Jose Aldo vs Max Holloway for the FW belt. Aldo says its gonna be in March.

and

El Cucuy vs Khabib for the number one contender spot or maybe even an Interim belt. They have been doing some trash talk in twitter so its obvious its gonna happen.(In March too)

Lawler vs Nick Diaz has been rumoured on the making too... that would be fun.

Anyone hear Cole Miller on the MMA hour?

That is one pissed of man. He actual sounds clinically depressed. Not a good frame of mind to be in fight week

Looking forward to Saturday, Fabers retirement fight. If he beats Pickett we must might have two retirements

What was wrong with him? I always thought he came across pretty well.

Pickett should be retired already.

Women's 145 title announced. Holm vs. Germaine de Randamie fight for the title at UFC 208.

As expected, Cyborg hasn't taken the news well.

Also, JDS will be knocking out Stefan Struve again on the 19th of February.

Could be interesting...

obviously Dana can not always be trusted but he claimed Cyborg was offered two opponents for the new title and she turned them down

I mean I don't see why he wouldn't have her in the fight. Holm v Cyborg would be a big deal

They want cyborg to make 145 in 8 weeks but after her last two weight cuts, she wants more time as she feels drained and depressed.

I'm not overly bothered Cyborg isn't in it. She comes across as so self involved and makes out the world is against her for some reason when the reality if the UFC has fed her cans to beat who are much smaller than her and she's obsessed with calling out Rousey despite being different weight classes. Put down the roids and might stand a chance of making the weights

Well Dana, who is technically her boss called her Wanderlei in a dress and the likes of Rogan have laid into her looks plenty of times... you can see why she might feel victimized. Then they made her have fights at 140 for no reason, complete waste of time as there isn't a 140 division and her opponents were willing to go up to 145...

And she hasn't fought cans, she fought the best in her weight class. It's like saying MM fights cans but in reality, it's the division that's just not as stacked as others/her and MM are just leagues above the opponents.

Let's also stop with the steroid thing. She's been clean for a long time and also, many other fighters have been in steroid cases yet she seems to get the brunt of the mean eyes.

I'm not a huge Cyborg fan but she has been made the victim a fair bit in my eyes.

The reason she fought 140, was for her to get adjusted to try and make 135. Looked to me they were helping her out

She also blamed George Lockhart for her issues in her last cut. He is pretty much the best in the business

Dana says a lot about a lot of people and can be a dick, . Joe Rogan is an employee of the UFC and is entitled to an opinion as much as other people, he's hardly in a directors role or a position of power so I don't know why that would matter. I mean it's not really any difference to Cyborg basically calling Ronda fat bitch and accusing her of being pregnant for putting on some weight? Yeah it's fine when she does it but not when Joe Rogan does it to her? That's odd.

She's got a huge chip on her shoulder to me. She complains about everything but then there's history where she turned down the stuff she actually wanted (i.e. the Ronda fight, this fight now) so you can't have it all ways.

Most people who test positive for steroids will get shit about being on steroids, especially when they look like Cyborg does. I'm sure there's plenty of fighters who use them who haven't been caught but her muscle mass is ridiculous and I'd be hugely surprised if she isn't still taking something.

I was mentioning the UFC feeding her shit fighters which they have albeit it's shit fights.

Each to their own I suppose but I've no interest in watching her fight, the more she whinges for the sake of whinging I lose interest in her. I don't blame the UFC for doing it without her to be honest. Even if she got this fight and won she'd still complain about something.

Except it was pretty obvious that she was never going to be able to fight at 135. Even Lockhart said that while she might be able to make that weight, being able to perform at it was a different question entirely. She was stupid for entertaining the notion of dropping that much but the UFC were even more stupid for trying to get her to do so. It was a waste of everyone's time.

Who's the best pound for pound MMA fighter of all time? Fedor Emelianenko?

 it's true though.

Trying so hard to be hot, likeable sweet chick. Feck off with that bollocks.

Maybe she actually is a hot, likeable sweet chick?

Open workouts are often kind of relaxed. Fighters don't seem to take them overly seriously.

Fedor, Jones, Anderson Silva, GSP all have a case.

Tonight, I'm going to say GSP had the most well rounded toolset to win any fight.
