The MMA thread

The idea that arguably the most dominant female fighter in MMA history has terrible stand up is ridiculous to me, nothing will change my opinion on that. Nobody is sitting here claiming she's a world class boxer, her stand up is fine is what I said, not bad but not great (her knees are very good and she's very good in the clinch too). It helps that she has a very good chin on her and that she has shown she can take shots. As for the Bethe mention, I used that as an example that Ronda's stand up clearly isn't terrible considering Bethe's main strength is her striking, sure she bullrushed her and overwhelmed her but she still went in there and did what nobody has come close to doing to date and that's go toe to toe with her and knock her out. She outstruck Tate when they fought too. The only person to properly outstrike Rousey to date is former world boxing champion Holly Holm. Is she a great boxer? Of course not. Is it her main strength? Again, of course not.

When you actually look into it there's nothing to back up the argument that her stand up is terrible. Most of her fights have gone the way of her taking down her opponent and submitting them or KO in quick fashion. The only time they haven't is Tate, McMann, Bethe and Holm. She outstruck the first three before getting knocked out by Holm who was a boxer. She's not at a lesser standard in stand up than hardly any female in this division, Rousey finishing fights in devastating fashion with the hip toss/armbar combination seems to mask that for some.

Like I said, many of those playing down the talent of Rousey will go straight back to the excuse of the division being weak if she comes in and destroys Nunes while Nunes will go from being a terrible match up for her to being a 'can'.

Rousey has talent, just not in stand-up. She's very, very lucky the division doesn't have competent strikers; her game is perfect for the underdeveloped division she dominated. Great female strikers are few and far between, so it's not just Rousey's weight class at fault here, to be fair to her.

I've already said there's great kudos coming Rousey's way if she goes in and beats Nunes due to all the factors mentioned in my initial post; I don't actually have anything against her, but I maintain a spade should be called as such. Her standup is pretty suicidal for the most part, and she got away with it due to there not being the fighters out there who could actually exploit all the openings she provided.

Intimidation and fear of the clinch worked in her favour, too, so much so that her stand up was constantly overlooked because 'she got the job done' it got to the point where she started to believe the hype, or certainly fed into it for the masses.

She's fortunate there aren't any truly ferocious stand up specialists to humiliate her worse than Holm did; a Joanna or Cyborg, it would be absolute car crash TV.

She always has a chance of destroying anyone with her grappling but she needs to remember she is not a good striker. Going into the Holm fight she was arguably overconfident in her stand up due to some previous bull-rushing success, but got exposed in that regard and by that point it was almost already too late to go back to relying on her judo. The fact that she'd already been walloped a few times by counters I'm sure played a part in her lack of ability to throw Holm. If she learnt her lesson then she'll come in with a better gameplan and take a Maia like approach, knowing where her strengths lie and going back to her basics. The fact that she's sticking with the same joke of a fight camp and trainer isn't a good sign though. If she'd gone to a camp like Kings just down the road from her then I'm sure we could have seen her develop a truly satisfactory muay thai arsenal.

Bit shit re GSP but I was hoping he'd stay out o the game anyway, it would be nice to have a fighter who went out on a high and stayed on a high to be honest.

Anyone up to date with the TUF season?

tomorrow starts the quarter-finals (or semis?)

Its been such a good season.

Its funny that the first eliminated participant (Brandon Moreno), is now the 13th ranked flyweight fighter in the UFC (defeated pubic hair beard man, forgot his name lol, not long ago on short notice). I guess that speaks volume of the level this season.

I've not seen any of it, last 1 I watched was Faber and McGregor, it had got a bit stale TUF but apparently this one is really good especially with the fights.

It was Smolka he beat wasn't it?

Yeah he beat Smolka very impressively.

It's a good idea to have all champions really, adds the interest cos DJ has wiped out a division including the 2 coaches. It's also a division that never really does good numbers in PPVs so they may gain some interest with what they're doing.

Moving away slightly but the UFC 206 card is terrible. Obviously with 205 being the biggest ever and 207 having Rousey back it seems they've just written it off. Except DC vs. Rumble there's not really much of any interest. Surely they were banking on GSP or someone.

Feel sorry for DC. He took this card ahead of a few others because he thought GSP would be on it. That card will bomb hard.

I had the whole season series linked on BT sport but it stopped recording and I can't find it anywhere on the schedules. Anyone know what's going on?

I surely am missing weekly events

Bigfoot Silva got released today, I hope he retires. The amount of knockouts he has received just can't be good for you

Nice one. Although a bit nonsensical for Mousasi, but i can understand for him to want to avenge that defeat.

too bad ill miss it... Black Sabbath that Saturday.

Ill be rooting in spirit for Hall.

Saw an interview where Rumble was asked "why did you tap out against DC?" "Because I was getting choked and I love air" was his answer.

Sometimes I wonder if interviewers purposely ask the stupidest questions they can think of. Like some long running secret joke.

So Cruz to face Garbradnt on the Ronda Rousey card? Exciting fight. Hopefully Cruz embarrasses 'No Love'.

On another note: @Mark_GrumpyLion You hear me on Co-Main Event as Pavel Nedved? Those yanks caught on to my antics  Might ease up for a couple of weeks now or go in with a less 'obviously' European name... I'm thinking Charlie Austin will be next!

Cruz sorted there! Big pay day and a fight he should win easily as well. Should of been TJ again really was unlucky in the 1st fight and came back well at UFC 200.

Easy fight for Cruz, Garbrandt's style is perfect for Dominick. Feel sorry for TJ what else does he have to do to get a rematch?

Haven't listened to it yet but already looking forward to it now.

I like this fight, not sure I'd say it's an easy fight either. Don't get me wrong, for me Cruz is without a doubt the best in this division when healthy and is the favourite, but Garbrandt has been on a tear knocking people out, you can see why they've gone for this one.

The division is pretty good I'd say. Really interested to see what they do with Dillashaw, Lineker, Rivera, Carraway, Dodson, Sterling and for sure Almeida. Looking at it on paper there's some brilliant fights to be had while Cruz/Garbrandt fight. Carraway is calling out Lineker (I'd love to see Lineker knock him out). Rivera is on what, a 19 fight win streak in MMA? Dodson is coming off of a close split decision loss to Lineker, would actually love to see him go up against Dillashaw again who he previously knocked out. Despite Almeida getting knocked out by Garbrandt he looked like an absolute savage prior to that. Plenty of fighters waiting in the wings for a shot at the title after that fight.

Oh yeah I can see why they've made it. Lineker has just fought, Assuncao has just lost to TJ, Rivera is injured I think and Caraway is hardly the most interesting fighter. I just think Cruz beats him pretty easily, he's got huge knockout power but he'll struggle to touch Cruz as is evident in all his previous fights. Hopefully TJ gets the winner really but I agree again it's an interesting division and it's a lot of young fighters as well.

Yeah bantamweight is shaping up really nicely at the moment. I don't think Garbrandt really did quite enough for the title shot. Almeida and Mizugaki doesn't really seem like enough with the current healthiness of the division, but it's a nice fight none the less and he's very quick with his hands so who knows he might have a chance.

Bump.

Wah gwan?

I've not watch it but did they move the channel from BT Sport 2 to BT Sport 3 or something?

Are you on Virgin? I've got UFC on series like as a whole and it's usually always on BT SPort 2. They had 1 fight night card on BT Sport 3 the other week and it didn't record so it might be that.

Garbrandt talked his way into a title shot. Almeida and Mizugaki aren't enough to warrant him title shot ahead of TJ who lost a very close decision to Cruz and then smoked Assuncao. It's easier to sell TAM vs. Cruz as opposed to Cruz vs. Dillashaw though so it's keeping in line with the way UFC matchmake these days.

Bump.

Wanted to start watching this... anybody know where it is gone?

I usually watch it on BT. Had it series linked but hasn't recorded since episode 4 and can't find it on any of the schedules for any BT channel. Very strange.

During the McGregor season they had weeks in America without new episodes becauee of the NBA etc. I think the world series started this week and may have taken the timeslot when cross schduled.
