The MMA thread

Putting Americano on ignore is the best thing I've ever done. Being like that since his essay on why Aldo would destroy McGregor last year. That "show ignored content" option was too tempting not to click. Knew it would be him.

Miaow.

You do realize Mcregor was fighting at a weight he's not able for? More muscle more oxygen. Stop crying.

He moved up one weight class from his true weight? Ain't no thang, plenty of fighters do that. He usually drops down one to get an advantage.

Tonight Diaz showed that he's a much more complete fighter than Conor. McGregor is a great striker but he's doesn't have the cardio and he doesn't have the repertoire that a true MMA fighter has. How can you be a top level MMA fighter and gas in the second round? When BJ Penn got fat he could still last longer without getting short of breath.

There were several points where Nate had him on the ropes and Conor was in real danger of losing. Nate could eat Conor's punches all day, he's a bleeder and it takes a lot more to finish him than Conor can deliver. I don't think Nate was ever really in danger, Conor did not push him that close to his limit. Conor gassed again. With a full camp, total focus, and 5 months of prep the best he could do was a controversial split decision. Hollow victory for Dana's meal ticket.

Never in danger even though he was dropped several times in the first couple of rounds? Hmmmm.

Doesn't seem to be as controversial a decision outside this thread.

Nate tried two take downs in the latter stages of the fight and Conor had the energy and the head to defend them. Nate landed a fair few punches too and Conor stayed standing so I'm not to sure Conor was as gassed as people say he was. It was Nate that ended up on his arse 3 times from Conor's punches, he was dragging his arse around the floor like a dog trying to get rid of a cling on at one stage trying to get Conor to go down with him. He knew he was getting hit.

It'll be interesting to see when it comes out what exactly happened Conor's foot and when it happened.

You put a guy on ignore for thinking Aldo would smash him? Hardly the most out there opinion imo. Aldo's the better fighter of the two and hadn't lost in like a decade

So then why didn't Conor finish him on the ground? Because he can't. There are big holes in his game.

Nate takes a lot of punishment. He always fights bloody and messed up.

You could just as easily ask why Nate couldn't shoot to take Connor to the ground. The answer being: that's a hole in Diaz' game. Plus McGregor's takedown defence was pretty good.

Agree that there are glaring holes in McGregor's game. That said, McGregor deservedly won a fight against someone most people (including myself) thought was going to beat him. He adjusted his strategy from the first fight, ate the punishment he had to and got the win. He deserves big credit.

Fair fecks to Conor, and what a fight it was! not sure how anybody could come to the conclusion that Nate should have won it though, Conor knocked the fecker down three or four times.

Plus even if he was gassing, he still pulled it together to win the forth round. No easy job after being dominated in the third.

Yeah the card top to bottom (well missed the first fight) was really good and really fun. Though the main event going the distance and being a war really helped.

you're an idiot conor clearly won the fight. Knocked him down 3 times. Diaz tried wrestling and failed. Conor lit him up and all Diaz could do was clinch. In my mind it wasn't even close conor killed him and Diaz clinched. Conor is the better fighter. Draw my arse.

Media scorecard. Like I said, seems to be a lot less controversial outside this thread. These are people who nearly all favoured Diaz going into the fight too....

No.

He was constantly trolling the thread, trying to bait people into responses, that's why I put him on ignore.

We'll see what happens in the third fight. So far we have a knockout and a very close decision that a lot of pros are disputing. Conor does some things really well but over the long term he will be found out and already has to a large extent. You can't call yourself an MMA fighter without top cardio and without a ground game.

Third fight is an obvious win for both fighters really. They make a load of money and at this point both of them will probably come out of the trilogy with their reputations enhanced rather than diminished, regardless of who wins overall.

And then he got knocked out in 13 seconds. What's your point. Conor will beat him again by the way. Let's see aldo fight Diaz at 170.

Nah, Diaz was five or ten seconds from finishing the fight at the end of the third(?) round and definitely won the fifth. Think the judges had it right, a close but right call in McGregor's favour.

You have a submission and a clear win. Conor killed him outside if the pussy clinch. Diaz became a panic wrestler and couldn't take conor down. The next fight at 155 will drain nate and 1 of those knockdown will become a finish. In what way did nate win that fight? He was clearly beaten.

Clearly seem to have an agenda. Talking about Connor not being an MMA fighter while sitting on a chair and typing on a keyboard at the comfort of your house.
Connor actually has a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu. Furthermore, he had excellent take down defense today and was taken down only once at the end.
Both are good fighters and we shall see a rematch in the future (think it'll be at 155 only). But before that Connor should defend his title against Aldo too.

Then he lost the round is the round and that's it. Conor knocked him down 3 times yo no times. Then he clinched and wrestled but conor fight him off. Conor clearly won. It wasn't even that close of you didn't score it round on round.

That was fight of the year for me. Can definitely understand having it down as a draw, but I thought Conor won that.

As one of Conor's biggest critics, how good was his takedown defence tonight?

The most surprising thing, however, was Conor's gas tank. Now I know that can be attributed to a few things, such as him not being built for 170, getting caught a lot, and the clinch fighting, but it's definitely a concern IMO.

We'll have to see how he looks at 155. Definitely a concern though given how ultra prepared he was supposed to be.
