The MMA thread

Bosse vs O'Connell was amazing, such a good match! Cowboy looked lethal, such a bulletproof fighter no matter his win/loss record. Main event wasn't too interesting, Rory just seemed out of it.
Apparently he felt his nose give way pretty early and even in training. Hrs only 26 but I think the mileage has caught up with the poor guy and based on that performance, he'll be lucky to get that pay bump he wants. Such a shame, one of my favorite fighters.

So GSP says on MMA Hour he's ready to come back. Will he get an immediate title shot? Will he fight only for the big money fights? Why wasn't this announced during the event in Canada? Will he be as dominant as before? Will Helwani get banned for getting this information before UFC released it? Exciting times ahead!

After the 7-0 celebrations, yesterday got to finally watch the whole event unspoiled.

I said before the fight i couldn't see him as favourite because of his nose injuries, and yeah, it was worse than i thought. At times he was overly protecting his face (leaving him exposed to body shots and his chin to upper cuts), specially when trying to ram forward. I hope he deals with his nose properly and come back stronger, at only 26 years old he can still offer so much. Maybe a change of GYm might help him too. I don't know.. i feel his game plan wasn't the best and he was looking quite one dimensional and stiff.

Cowboy performance was the highlight of the night for me. Really impressive. The Bossé/O'Connell fight was a war. Amazing fight that.

Also the Misha Cirkunov fight was epic. Give him a top10 next!

In other news,

The new early weigh-ins system is clearly working in making the fights more competitive and hardcore.

We saw fighters getting recovered from knock downs and punches that would have usually end up the fight. At least i saw it that way this last 2 events...

On one hand we have guys like Wonderboy Thompson saying that this new system is awesome because the fighters have enough time to rehydrate and fight at their best shape, but on the other hand, we have guys like Aljamain Sterling, who said that this method instead of regulate the weigh ins into more natural weighs is doing the complete opposite, by fomenting the fighters to do more extreme weight cuts, as now they have more time to recover.

personally i agree with Sterling. This new system is far from optimum, but between this and the old system, its a step forward at least in terms of the shape of the guys at fight time...

For me, the way to go would be to weight the fighters 15 days before the fight, then 10 days before, then 5 days before and finally the day of the fight. The fighter weight should not vary more than 2 kg between each measure. That way you make sure the fighter stays in his weight natural umbral.

Anyway, it seems the Nevada commission gonna look into the chance of implement the early weight in system to more events, so i guess that's gonna be the way to go soon enough.

Yeah, I think you are right. btw, I made it into the Co-Main event podcast again, last question :D

They're lying to you buddy! It's all a gimmick.
Rogan himself said last week that for years they have had all morning to weigh in. That the officials wait for hours and they give them a call when the fighter is ready. At the grand weigh in Rogan would announce the weigh in from that morning. He would announce it as the official weight as opposed to what the weight is there and then.
It's been like that for years. Schaub has stories like that from years ago as well.
All this early morning talk is nonsense to make it look as if they are trying to combat the dangers of dehydration after the i.v. fiasco.

Can't see him winning but fair play to CM Punk for taking a fight which he will (probably) lose. I can understand fighters being annoyed with him being there but I've never got the fans abuse of him, guy just wants to try out something he's dreamed of doing. I assume WWE paid him well as well so it's not like he needs to do it. He'll bring money to the fighters on the card with PPV points as well so I doubt they'll be complaining much.

I think they're annoyed because they feel like he's got an easy ride into the UFC and is getting paid the big bucks also, all because of him being a famous WWE star... It's like someone coming into your company without any experience, skipping any junior position and getting paid more than you because their dad has connections.

A bit like us hiring Moyes.

No different than Lesnar though. They're star attractions, they get better treatment than the average Joe who likes to fight.

The good thing with MMA is you can't really hide, it's sink or swim. We will know soon enough if CM Punk really has what it takes.

That's not on him though, he shouldn't be blamed or get shit for any of this IMO. Dana made the decision. Personally I don't see the issue with it at all, it's not exactly a regular thing that happens. Punk coming in the way he has isn't going to effect any fighter what so ever outside of them potentially doing better business on the card(s) he fights on.

In other news, TUF is almost over. Joanna's team finished 1-7 against Claudia, although I think the one guy that got through for Joanna (Josh) will win the contract on the guys side (fancy Tatiana for the women's side). Joanna also lost the coaches challenge, you could see she was absolutely pissed. One of those rivalries where you don't need to even consider if this is all for show and to build a fight, you just know they legit hate each other. Watching the show it looked like Claudia was in the head of Joanna the entire time, got to remember this was all filmed quite a while back though so whether it'll have an effect on the fight we'll have to see. How the feck do you call this fight though? The first was ridiculously close and a lot argue Claudia won it, but Joanna has also improved a hell of a lot since then IMO. Five rounds rather than three too, a must see fight this one.

A nice analogy but it lacks one thing. Imagine said inexperienced chappy brings several big accounts with him due to his fame/esteem in another industry. The company profits simply through his presence, irrespective of his performance.

He is not particularly jumping the queue in terms of the calibre of fight he is getting but does benefit from the greater level of coverage the fight gets and likely his remuneration. His brand allows for this, something most new entrants to the sport don't have.

The card will receive more attention due to the CM Punk name being attached, it'll probably draw in a few voyeurs that may not otherwise have taken an interest in UFC and they may stick around once they experience the merits of the sport. For the same reason Brock Lesnar will most likely be one of the highest paid fighters in the company, not because he is one of the best fighters but because he is one of the best placed to put bums on seats.

I'll create an analogy for the reverse of the current situation.

You have two sales reps at a firm. A young, inexperienced guy who has the charisma and patter to sell a high number of units but is only paid a starting salary in spite of making the company shed loads of money. Then you have a reasonably well established rep who has worked his way up from the mail room but only ever manages to shift a mediocre/average number of units. He is paid a better wage simply due to his relative seniority in the firm in spite of making only modest amounts of money for the company.

It's a bit different with Brock as he had a fight outside the UFC and also had a lot of wrestling (real not WWE) experience. CM Punk (as far as I know) has only done WWE. Having said that, I'm not one of those angry with what's happening, I like it. I want to be entertained and will tune in eagerly to see CM Punk out of curiosity. I think people should commend him on having the balls to step into the octagon rather than mock him for having a virgin nose.

Yeah I agree with the fighters who are on less being annoyed but the fans is the one I don't get. He brings more money to the UFC for fighters on his card if they get PPV points (at least in his 1st fight.) I think a lot of UFC fighters should be on more than they are really and trhe UFC fecked them up with the Reebok stuff but it's not Punk's fault. Surely he's well within his rights to accept the contract?

I imagine it will be short lived anyway his body is meant to be fecked from wrestling but I don't mind him giving it a go really. Good luck to him.

Re: The CM Punk discussion - every fighter within combat sports is their own brand. CM Punk's brand is bigger than most in the game so he will get paid as such. If they feel sour about Punk's payoff, take up pro wrestling, make it there and come back.

Obviously I'm not being serious when I say that but any UFC fighter that is earning less than Punk who thinks they should be earning more, should go do something to improve their individual brand instead of bitching about it behind closed doors.

I hope Maia gets his title shot after this fight. (if he wins)

No one on the lighweight division top20 had the balls to fight El Cucuy on short notice (July 13, Sioux Falls), so he will fight some prospect instead...

To be fair everyone in the top 15 has just fought, are going to fight, or are injured. Just his luck really to have got injured when he did. Now he has to play the waiting game again.

Supposedly this guy he's fighting is really fecking good though. Obviously it's going to be a tough ask to beat Ferguson of all people on short notice but maybe he can make a good fight of it at least.
