Just a very smart performance from JDS. Rothwell can still hang towards the top of this division I just had a feeling that JDS was a really bad matchup for him.

JDS is in an odd place right now. The win gives him a bit of rejuvenated cred but no logical next opponent. He's already fought Cain 3 times, beaten Miocic, won't fight Werdum since Cain will get the winner of Werdum/Miocic. I suppose Arlowski, a rematch with Overeem, or possibly Fedor would be interesting.

Sad for Big Ben but glad for JDS who people were saying is past it, which is ridiculous considering the fights he lost weren't exactly to bums.

JDS seemed surprised Rothwell fell over so easily.

I think he will get another title shot soon, probably the winner of Cain/Werdum. Werdum is pretty old so I don't see him sticking around the division much longer, so JDS will be in good shape going forward. The Heavyweight division could do with an infusion of new talent though, as most of the current top fighters are well into their 30s.

I'd like to see The Reem get the next shot if he beats Arlovski. He's looked good since becoming Eco-reem!

A Portuguese fighter passed away last night, after a fight in Dublin. :(

That's absolutely terrible news. Condolences to the family and friends of the fighter and also thoughts with the opponent who must feel terrible.

No doubt the pitchforks will be out for the sport now, despite MMA's record of tragedies in this regard being much better than many other sports. Alas all that comes secondary to the actual tragedy of a young man losing his life.

That was the first fight under the TEF organization too. Will be interesting to see where they go from here.

Apparently it should have been/could have been stopped earlier than it was.

Really sad news.

Looks like an incredibly unfortunate incident. From the clip that is going around, it looks like any other finish you see at an MMA event.

Did anything significant happen in the fight before the last minute or so? The whole thing is making me wonder how thorough the pre-fight medical was and if there was something wrong with him before he stepped into the cage.

McGregor was interviewed after the event and he said he thought it should have been stopped earlier and that refs need to be on their toes. This was before anyone knew he was hurt.

On the other hand, he was apparently checked by doctors afterwards and seemed fine so I guess this is just one of those unfortunate things that happens in combat sports.

It has highlighted the total lack of regulation in Ireland though. The Irish Sports council doesn't officially recognise MMA as a sport as no governing body for the sport has applied to them, so safety standards can vary wildly. In this case there were three medics at the fight but there have apparently been events where fighters as young as 17 have been fighting with no medics present.

Two really good cards coming up over the next week and a half. Still quite gutting they both lost their main events in Khabib/Ferguson and Jones/Cormier though, two fights that took both cards to the next level. Still, some quality fights coming up.

This weekend: UFC on Fox - Teixeira vs. Evans
Teixeira/Evans
Machida/Henderson
Khabib/Horcher
Namajunas/Torres
Correia/Pennington
John Dodson on the Fight Pass prelims and more

One to watch: Namajunas vs. Torres. Big fight for the women's Strawweight division with a potential title shot on the line. Namajunas winning could be big for the division, looking to avenge the loss to Torres back in 2013. IMO it'll be much better to draw excitement and interest for the division if Rose wins here.

Weekend after: UFC 197 - Jones vs. Saint Preux
Jones/OSP
Mighty Mouse/Cejudo
Pettis/Barboza
Whittaker/Natal
Esparza/Lima (Carla's first fight since losing the title to Joanna)

One to watch: Pettis/Barboza, although quite a few big fights on this one.
Hidden gem: Hester/de Lima - Somebodies getting finished.

Machida withdrawn from upcoming fight with Henderson after declaring usage of a banned substance. From what I can make out, he likely knew he was going to be popped when random testers came to his door so got out ahead of it.

Sucks for the card, but can't complain. USADA doing their job. Rose vs Torres has been bumped up to Co-main.

Wow they're really pushing Fight Pass:

UFC 200 Week:

Thursday - LW title (Fight Pass card)
Friday - SW title (TUF finale)
Saturday - UFC 200.

All in Vegas. RDA must be cursing that injury. Massive pay drop between the Conor fight and headlining a FP card.

I bet you RDA is praying for a Mcgregor win at 200. Only way he gets that fight else.

Eddie Alvarez for the title in the most stacked division there is. What a joke.

it was obvious it was gonna happen, but damn... he is so limited.

Well it makes sense. Tony and Khabib have a storyline so that can wait, Pettis lost two and Alvarez realistically is the next contender so why not shut up Alvarez whilst giving fight pass something to shout about

Alvarez had a good case for being number one contender. Don't count him out, you don't beat fighters like Melendez and Pettis by being limited. He's a well rounded fighter in all areas, with pragmatic fight IQ (in his UFC fights) and determination to get the job done. Yes I think RDA wins but I also think it could be his toughest defence yet. Wouldn't be surprised to see a 49-46 type decision.

a 2-1 UFC record shouldn't be enough to get a title shot in a division that stacked. They guy doesn't even look talented enough.

UFC and their ranking are to blame though... for example how the feck James Vick (4-0 UFC) is not even in the top 30. he would destroy Alvarez.

ps. Alvarez vs Nate Diaz would be a fun fight.

Alvarez is high up because he already had a reputation and also beat Melendez who was top 5 and Pettis who used to be champ.

Sorry mate you don't know enough about who Alvarez is. He's been amongst the highly regarded lightweights in the world for a long time. He's competing in a completely different league to a fighter like James Vick. Wins over guys like Pettis, Melendez, Aoki. 27-4 record with a lot of decent names on there. He's also had many absolute wars in the past. If some of the unranked guys aren't getting a push it's often because they aren't ready.

Maybe you are right... can't say i watched him before he joined UFC, but his last 3 fights certainly didn't impress me. His last fight specially.

I hope it is a matter of the opponents not giving him enough to work and him just sticking to his gameplan (to grind a decision) rather than just having a limited skill-set.

Khabib already grinded a decision from RDA so i guess we all know how this fight gonna be (on paper) from Alvarez point of view. I expect RDA to be better prepared this time though.

I suppose they couldn't have given it to Khabib given that he's still fighting and they wanted to lock in the July Fight Night event before Khabib fought. Alvarez already beat Pettis, so he was basically the last man standing in terms of an RDA opponent. Its pretty easy to see the UFC calculus going forward after Khabib and RDA dispatch their next opponents. These guys will duke it out at the first MSG event.
