The MMA thread

Poor Edgar though, guy deserves his shot. Would have been more fair if they made McGregor vacate the belt when he moved up and had Aldo v Edgar fight for it.

Can't see him beating Dos Anjos either.

If McGregor stays fit, then he'll fight him at 200.

The UFC are taking a huge risk here. McGregor simply cannot have a harder fight than RDA. If he loses, he will lose huge momentum even though he still has the fw belt. The UFC will lose a lot of money in the long run.

Similarly Holm v Tate is dangerous. Miesha is arguably a harder fight for Holm due to her style. If she wins then the UFC will lose a hell of a lot of money because the difference between Holm v Rousey II and Tate v Rousey III would be astronomical.

McGregor will still tower over him though, which is an advantage Conor uses expertly.

Will be the fun to watch the McGregor doubters all over again!

I'm a huge McGregor fan but I can't see him winning. I'd love to. Imagine McGregor v Pettis. Christ.

They are the same size.

Uh. No they really are not.

RDA allegedly walks around at 195 sloppy. Cleans up his diet, drops down a bit and then makes a massive hydration cut. RDA is a huge 155'r. Connor is a huge 145'r. The real weight difference come fight time will be, I would guess, over 10 pounds.

Mark Bocek is on record as saying he's far and away the biggest LW he's ever fought. The fact is RDA is a very large LW. He is to the LW division what Connor is to the FW division. By that I mean, they are basically guys that could probably fight at one higher weight class. RDA would NOT look out of place fighting at 170. He wouldn't be the biggest guy obviously, but he wouldn't look out of place.

Height is the same and Conor has more reach. He is cutting ridiculous amounts to get to 145 and would probably be cutting quite a bit to get to 155. The size difference isn't that much.

He just shit on Mayweather there.

Bit odd to single out Mayweather when Mayweather didn't actually criticise him. I'd guess it's using the name for more publicity which does tend to work (not that McGregor needs a load of publicity but more can never help.)

GSP McGregor fight trending on social media at the moment. Surely impossible given the weight disparities.

Think it comes from GSP's ex manager suggesting it. She reckons he could easily get down to 155. Seems very unlikely though, especially as we still have to see how McGregor manages at that weight first.

Apparently Mcgregor can go up to Welterweight though.

UFC 197 is shaping up to be an event to remember.

Multiple outlets are reporting that the March pay-per-view event will feature a pair of blockbuster title bouts, as Rafael dos Anjos will defend the lightweight strap against Conor McGregor, while Holly Holm will face Miesha Tate for bantamweight gold. UFC 197 is expected to take place in Las Vegas on March 5 after originally being announced for Rio de Janeiro. Bleacher Report on Thursday first brought word of the card, although the UFC has yet to confirm the bookings.

After capturing the lightweight strap with a lopsided five-round verdict over Anthony Pettis at UFC 185, dos Anjos made his first defense in emphatic fashion, as he stopped Donald Cerrone in just 66 seconds in the UFC on Fox 17 headliner on Dec. 19. The Kings MMA product has won 10 of his last 11 bouts in the Octagon.

McGregor capped off a memorable 2015 at UFC 194 with a 13-second knockout of reigning featherweight king Jose Aldo. The “Notorious” Irishman, who is arguably the Las Vegas-based promotion’s fastest rising star, expressed a desire to become a two-division champion following his win over Aldo while adding that he has no plans to vacate the 145-pound belt.

Holm pulled off a shocking upset at UFC 193 when she scored a technical knockout triumph over Ronda Rousey 59 seconds into round two of their headlining clash in Melbourne on Nov. 14. The Jackson-Wink MMA member was initially expected to defend the belt in a rematch with Rousey, but UFC President Dana White on Wednesday revealed that Holm would fight a different opponent before facing Rousey again.

Tate, who came up short in her first bid for the bantamweight strap against Rousey at UFC 168, has won four straight fights since that defeat. Most recently, “Cupcake” took a unanimous decision triumph over Jessica Eye at UFC on Fox 16 in July.

Anjos has signed on his side. According to his manager.

There is more to size than height though.

RDA is a gigantic LW. Connor is a gigantic FW. Their starting points are 10 pounds apart. Gigantic for FW is cutting from around 170. Gigantic for LW is cutting from around 180.

Ya, in a million years I don't see how this happens unless McGregor is the one going up.

GSP was adding lean mass for the last however many years with a potential Silva catchweight super fight in mind. GSP was also one of the biggest 170'rs around. I don't see how this is possible unless Connor packs on 20 pounds of lean mass in the next 2 years before GSP is truly too old and too shot.

Besides, other than just a huge money grab, there are far more interesting fights for Connor. I'd like to see him fight Edgar. I'd like to see an Aldo rematch, provided Aldo stays relevant and doesn't pack it in. I think Connor if he moves up to LW will have his hands full. LW is a shark tank. Khabib if he can ever get healthy. RDA. Pettis.

The timing for a GSP super fight isn't there. GSP is too big right now, even with his rust and time off Connor would have to hope to Serra him. By the time Connor could gain the weight properly for GSP, GSP is going to be looking at the backside of his 30's and probably too old, slow and too shot for it to make any sense.

At 5'8'' i think it's unlikely that Dos Anjos is 195 when not training, almost 14 stone. Thats Ricky Hatton territory.

You are right though that there will be a bit of a weight difference between them, he would be somewhere around 170-180 i reckon. McGregor would have a slight height and reach advantage though.

Conor is more then gigantic for a FW. Look at his shoulder width and his natural body type. He is stocky for somebody his size and looks a bit strange with how thin his torso is. The guy has just destroyed any weight he has to get down to FW and honestly, I don't even know how he does it. The weight difference will be no more then 5 pounds IMO.

Look how weird and disproportionate his body is in this weigh in. He is cutting shit loads of weight there.

Comparison with Dos Anjos weigh in:

Michael Chiesa cut from 190lbs for his last fight. That cannot be healthy, but then again he looked great against Jim Miller.

In a division where the top 10 includes the likes of Cerrone, Pettis, Diaz, Barboza and Ferguson, you're calling RDA a gigantic LW...

I agree.

The fanboyism here for McGregor is off the chart. If McGregor is just a big FW then so is RDA. They carry their weight differently, McGregor more through the legs and back and RDA across the torso but they're not far apart in weight. RDA makes 155 easily whilst Conor looks terrible making 145.

If McGregor loses, it won't be because RDA was bigger.

Nice! Can't wait.

Would love to see McGregor beat Dos Anjos but don't think he will. He'll build the fight brilliantly as always though, should be fun.

Holm will beat Tate IMO, probably a decision victory.

fecking awesome news!

I have no idea how it will turn up. Dos Anjos is so good, but he has never fought a left hand like Conor's...

Conor haven't fought such a complete fighter as RDA as well.

This is 2 fighters at their prime time, its gonna be awesome.

ps. i'm leaning towards McGregor...

Looks like the soldier of gay Jesus might have been popped for steroids.

If it turns out to be true then that could be the last we see of him as he's already like 38. American Testosterone Team not doing their reputation any favours with yet another doping bust in their camp. I hope this doesn't mean another immediate title rematch with Rockhold-Weidman although it probably will, despite the first fight not being particularly close.

If true then he should get a life time ban.

I for one am shocked. You'd never have guessed it from looking at him.

Wow I go away on holiday for 1 weekend and so much happens.

Who would have thought gay-jesus would cheat like that? Never did I predict that. As I heard, it's funny how so many of the Jesus pushers end up cheating, Jesus must be one hell of a dealer. I would like them to give Jacare the shot. He was pretty hard done by in that fight, which in my opinion he should have won. Weidman got beat convincingly and I don't want to see him get Machida'd by coming back too soon. Jacare is the fight that makes sense...

Happy Diaz will be back soon and I would love it if his first fight back is in Holland

So who wins Cruz vs. TJ? I'm quite torn on this. I think a prime Cruz would embarrass TJ but the way he's acting in the build up and the fact that he's been out so long gives TJ a big chance, probably even the favourite... Toss of a coin this one I think. My coin says Cruz...

Don't agree with that what so ever but have seen quite a few saying it. For me that fight was ridiculously close up until Weidman made an uncharacteristic mistake going for a wheel kick. He ended up getting finished but IMO that was two incredible fighters going at it and it could easily have finished differently on a different day. Hoping Weidman get's the rematch personally.

As for Cruz/TJ my instinct is that it'll come down to how healthy Cruz is and whether or not the layoff he's had has had an effect on him negatively. I stick by what I've previously said, I'm not convinced TJ is anywhere near as good as people are making out. For me he proved to be a bad match up for Barao and that's where he's getting this huge hype from. Outside of Barao he hasn't convinced me at all.

I'm going Cruz in that one, he's a different level of fighter to anybody Dillashaw has faced bar possibly Barao. One hell of a card though.

I phrased it wrong. What I meant was Weidman took a hell of a pounding in round 3&4 and don't want him back so soon. It takes a lot of time to recover from something like that. I do however think the outcome will be the same

A fighter I know Brendan Loughnane is out there training with Cruz and helping him get ready for the fight and the videos he has been posting of Cruz look scary, movement looks great and the takedowns are looking strong. Cruz by ground and pound looks good to me.

Not sure he will finish TJ, although he finished his last fight easily, cruz does tend to go to decision more often than not

My prediction is cruz to win. But it'll go the distance I think

You are right but I think they both just have so much to prove in this fight. This is the defining fights of their careers, TJ has more pressure than ever in this fight and he has the possibility of fighting Faber in the back of his mind, just seems like a lot of distractions for him to put out the best performance and can see Dominick taking advantage of it. Will be fun either way.

I got TJ to retain the belt. Hopefully by stoppage. As long as he doesn't let Cruz into his head, he should win imo.

Cruz inactivity has to be a big toll.
