The MMA thread

He's just bigging himself up for calling it. He tweeted Holm to win by a KO before the fight started.

You sure about that (can't see anything on his timeline)? Because that's a complete 180 from what he was saying a few months back. I seem to remember him actually claiming it to be a terrible match up.

It's better for the sport that Rousey lost. Everyone was starting to think that the division was a complete joke -- so now all she has to do is book a rematch, win, and she comes away with more credit than she ever had. All good champions have competition, Ronda finally found some.

Ha, just heard that Rousey lost. It's about time that jumped up little shit was brought back down to Earth. People were getting so carried away by what was merely a juiced up woman having won a few fights in a weak division in a very uncompetetive sport (women's MMA).

So... How would a Rousey vs Mayweather fight go down people?

It's hilarious that the idea of her beating Mayweather was even entertained by her fans. Some people are not even on this planet.

Her trainer suggesting he cant knock her out is dumb. He hits harder then holms and has amazing defence /footwork. He would just toy with her all match as she bull rushed him like an idiot.

Some humble pie dished out tonight.

It's called selling a fight.

The worst part is now having to listen to all of these people crawling out of the woodwork to shit on Rousey. Same old story.

Brilliant performance from Holm.

Shocked she lost! Although Holmes did look great and also massive may i add. Rousey is still a great champion and I hope she comes back to win.

Rousey doesn't even look remotely like a member of the female sex here. PEDs in male sport is one thing, but when female athletes are starting to look like they are undergoing a sex change transformation then something is seriously wrong.

. Give your nonsense a rest.

There is no worst part. She lost, will hopefully learn from it and women's MMA has a lot more attention and competition because of the change in champion.

Shitting on somebody who got too big for her boots is just a bonus of this match.

So... How would a Rousey vs Mayweather fight go down people?

Tbf I don't think anyone was saying she'd win a boxing match. In a fight if she got him on the ground she'd kill him. So no real change there.

Hi Joe. I thought you might take this one badly. If shitting on her constitutes saying 'I told you so' when suggesting her striking was not very good and her division was weak then count me in.

It's the same old nonsense. Ronda winning? Oh her division is shit. Ronda loses? AHAHAHAHAHA, I TOLD YOU SHE'S SHIT. In fairness this was always going to happen if Ronda lost. She's a massive character who a lot of people can't stand and therefor that crowds their judgement.

Well personally I have no thoughts on her character or however she projects herself to sell fights. It was just plainly obvious to me that there were massive holes in her game and she'd be found out on the feet by a competent striker.

I expect she'll go back to plan A after this and win the inevitable rematch though.

This 100% this place is nearly as bad as Twitter

People don't get that she has to sell a fight when the opponent prefers to stay quiet. It's quite within Holm's right not to trash talk, but it usually leads to pressure on the other to build a little hype.

Apart from that I think what rousey has done over the last few years is pretty much amazing. There is not many other sports in the world that has a female as one of the biggest stars. No idea why so many are salivating over her loss. Although Holly Holm was a very worthy winner and I am very happy for her

She went in with no game plan, tried rushing her opponent who was a great kick boxer and relied on a part of her game that was not up to par. She was disrespectful to her opponent and deserved to lose.

Funny thing is she perfectly explained a game plan on Jimmy Fallon and yet still ignored her own analysis.

This is nothing more than good for the sport. Genuine competition in any division is fantastic and now we are slowly starting to get it in the female division. Plus this rematch is going to be huge. Brilliant.

I think she's one of those people that needs to get herself really wound up before a fight (would explain how close she is to the Diaz brothers too). She was practically out of breath talking to Rogan after the weigh in scuffle. That's never a good state to be in to calmly execute a game plan.

Her getting beaten doesn't mean she had no gameplan. She tried to push the pace and put ridiculous pressure on Holm. She's done this before and it's worked everytime she's actually done it. Holm is a different style of fighter though, somebody who's got a ridiculous amount of experience and chose to be patient and not panic. Ronda had a gameplan, it just didn't work.

Rousey consistently tries to prove a point. She did it in her last fight by going out and striking with somebody who's main skill was striking. Jones doesn't get called disrespectful (at least by the same people saying it about Ronda) when he goes in and does the exact same thing where he'll go out of his way to beat his opponent with what is one of their strongest strengths.

She made a mistake and got picked apart for it. My opinion doesn't suddenly flip and change based on one fight like this. Ronda is a legit athlete who's been one of the most dominant fighters ever seen in MMA. People can laugh at that and make excuses by claiming it's a weak division or whatever. We'll see where she goes after this, should be interesting either way.

Her mothers comments on Edmund cannot have helped in the build up to this

There is a big story behind all this.

Not too sure what to think, whenever I have heard interviews with him he comes across very well. And his partnership with rousey always seemed positive and genuine to me.

This reminded me a lot of Tyson/Douglas which I watched live back in the day. Tyson came in completely thinking he would do the same as he'd done his previous opponents and Douglass calmly fought the fight of his life and knocked him out. Ronda thought this would be as easy as her previous joke fights and she came up against a pro who fought the fight of her life.

This anyone else getting the feeling that rednev never got ask to the prom and just hasn't been able to let it go.

Now I'll mostly like get murder on here for saying this but watching UFC for the last year it's incredibly(Although with one BIG difference)similar to the wrestling that I watched as a kid in the late 90's.It seems for the most part the fighters seem to be playing characters during the press conferences and interviews (For good reasons as it sells tickets)Conor as much as I like the guy being a Dubliner myself it's hard not to notice that he's pretty much Ric Flair, these interviews where he's talks in these mystic quotes as if he's some Celtic warrior in a J. R. R. tolkien book(I say book I mean the movies, I haven't read anything that fecking long), yet everyone say's when the camera off he's a perfect gentleman. The same would apply to Ronda as well

Now not to say any of this is bad, quite the opposite and I think it adds a bit of fun before you know the good stuff the punching and kicking.

It's well known it's all acting. Same as in boxing, though UFC takes it pretty far, too far for my taste. I liked it better then the fighters respected each other.

Connor has come out and said its all an act.

At least I don't have to listen to my girlfriend, who isn't interested in sport whatsoever and has never seen an MMA fight in her life, tell me that Ronda Rousey would 'probably' kick blokes arse in a fight anymore.

That was absolutely glorious! Ronda acted like a classless cnut during the pre-fight and got her comeuppance. Well done HH!

But, it is part of the same coin. Yeah she puts on the personality to sell the fight but, because of that personality many are tuning in hoping that she loses. Same with Floyd most people tune in hoping he finally loses. That is how fights are sold. Build them up so someone can take them down.

The rematch will defo make huge money. Its the whole Silva/Weidman situation where everybody will want to see what Ronda has planned for the rematch (a different gameplan surely, one which is less striking based). Im sure Holly will know this which makes it intriguing.

It is weird to see how many people hate Rousey though.

It's hard to support someone who makes it look so easy, before this fight she was merking on everyone, it's hard to like some like that, especailly if you come in half way through and everyone loves an underdog.

Will be interesting how she comes back from this, if she'd have won this fight I reckon she would have retired.

Come on, don't take it so seriously. If Ronda wants to play the heel of course some will have fun at her expense. It would have been the same if Mayweather lost and the same if Conor loses.

It's very true...

Dana to hit Holm with a steel chair half way through the rematch after Herb Dean is knocked out. :D

Now, provided Aldo hasn't aged considerably in the last year and started a rapid decline, he is going to run right through Connor.

Someone might need to put Dana on suicide watch.

What evidence do you have to support that? Whens the last time Aldo stopped someone impressively? Sorry to say, but Aldo will gas and be stopped early against McGregor.
