The MMA thread

Thats the problem, yeah shes talented but people overstate how good she is...there is no competition in her weight class....she needs to fight Cyborg or rematch against the last fighter she beat, the name escapes me.

Load of absolute nonsense.

The division is completely fine. The issue for every woman in it is that they've come along at the same time as arguably the most dominant fighter in MMA history. No matter what Ronda does people still try to take away from how good she is. She had the one trick pony stuff aimed at her when she was collecting arms, she then picked apart McMann and now Correia, her striking is seriously underrated.

Reality is this would be a seriously competitive division if Ronda wasn't in it and people wouldn't be saying stupid stuff like that. These women aren't shit (Correia in fairness wasn't as good as she built herself up to be), Ronda is just a completely different animal in the same bracket as dominating fighters such as Silva and GSP.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with the division or women's MMA in general. Its just her that's too good. She's the most dominant athlete in any sport at the moment.

The other ladies division is far far more stacked in my opinion. Ronda is that good and she would dominate either way but there's not a single contender comparabe to Gadelha for example who fought earlier tonight, a long time Nova Uniao trained badass. How many of the girls at bantamweight even fight in well established camps? I can't think of any. Even the fringe girls at strawweight are mostly fighting at camps like Nova Uniao, Alliance, ATT, Alpha Male. It's a different kettle of fish down there. Obviously part of that is because it's a more natural kind of weight a bit like WW compared to LHW for the men.

You gotta love Rousey, to go to Brazil and shut her up by making her face plant the mat within 30 seconds was amazing. Very classy of her dedicating the fight to Roddy Piper too. There is simply no one at all in her league, she has dominated every single opponent with ease and I can't see that changing anytime soon. I didn't expect this fight to be over with quite so quickly, at least thought Correia would test her but should have known really, Rousey doesn't feck about and is just too damn good.

that co-main (and the rest of the main card) event was so disrespectful to Ronda. We got lucky the TUF finals were added.

She should tell Dana to put her minimum alongside CHris Weidman on her next UFC, or to feck off.

Pretty sloppy, really, from Rousey, I thought. Showed no defense at all, ate punches to close range, impressive power to get the KO, but absolutely no defense.

Really?

Who would you say is a contender with Ronda? Ronda never seems like she'll lose, she's completely dominant, to the point where I can't think of any athlete in history (off the top of my head) being.

There is only one and she has never proven she can make 135. But cyborg is a serious threat to Ronda if she can drop the weight

I don't think there is anyone else though

What? Don Bradman for starters, and I mean for starters. There are an awful lot of people who have started their careers like this -- Anthony Joshua in boxing is mirroring Rousey at the moment -- yet same criticism, hasn't been tested yet.

Mayweather, GGG, etc, etc, etc. It's a crowded list.

Wait, are you comparing Ronda Rousey to ANTHONY JOSHUA?

Ronda has defeated everyone else in the top 5 of the world rankings. With complete ease too. Anthony Joshua's done nothing like that. His most impressive perfomance to date was against a 37 year old in freefall.

You've just implied that Rousey is the most dominant athlete in the history of sport. She has a long, long way to go for that to be true. Joshua is an Olympic gold medallist, KO'd a guy who, despite never being Ali, was renowned for his ability to stay on his feet.

OK, though, if Joshua isn't up to that level (fair enough, has to beat a champion) the others certainly are -- Mayweather is beyond it, a different plateau. That's modern day sportsmen, could go through the annals of history (in boxing alone, Marciano) -- in fact, Rousey reminds me of Prince Naseem. Dominating with style, but the division doesn't look like much -- I wonder what happens if she finds her Barrera equivalent (if one even exists in that weight class).

I think it's fair to say Rousey is one of the most dominant figures in sport. No other athlete dominates their division or club sport as she does women's MMA. And its not because women's MMA is so shit, its because she's an outlier who is far better than anyone she has encountered. This is early Mike Tyson, circa 1985 type stuff.

I agree that she's one of the most dominant in sport at the moment, the Tyson comparison is also one I thought of. But "most dominant ever" is an embarrassingly high level of hyperbole. In women's combat sport even, Laila Ali comes to mind.

Just watch the fight, I expected that but, come on! Rousey is something else.

I agree, but for the sake of contradicting you Sebastien Loeb dominated the WRC in a ridiculous way.

In that case there is only Klitschko but he seems to fight against dross. The thing with Rousey is that she is better and better, she is so dominant that she can destroy her opponents with strikes when she is a better wrestler.

Rousey went blow for blow with one of the better strikers in the division and still knocked her the f*ck out, she is an animal.

In boxing you have Mayweather, GGG, Kell Brook, Thurman (not for me) and Garcia. All undefeated, all champions. Mayweather is on a level by himself imo, after that you have the likes of Rousey, GGG, Brook, Garcia, etc (could add Frampton and Quigg in there). But it's subjective.

*Garcia is actually a champion, just not been having title fights lately, stepped up in weight.

Has Klitschko avoided anyone ? If not, then his opponents haven't been dross, rather he's been that good.

I know nothing about boxing I heard about all the guys you mention, I saw them but I'm suspicious about the amount of undefeated boxers, is the competition really good?

You would have to find a fighter who is knocking or submitting their opponents out in the 1st round to compare them Rousey. Hence the Mike Tyson circa 2005ish comparison.

That's the constant debate, he is excellent at controlling the space and he is huge but I also think that the opposition isn't very good.

Edit:@Raoul I think you are right though, she is the best pound for pound fighter.
