The MMA thread

Delighted but was very conterversial

A judge scored 49-46 and I automaticaly assumed it was for Hendricks. No chance in hell did Lawlor win 4 rounds

But out of 5 round only 3 I was sure of. 5 was lawlors and 2 and 3 was Hendricks.

Agreed. I was sure Hendricks won after I heard the last score. How that judge Towbridge gave the 2nd to Lawlor I'll never know.

UFC want Jon Jones as a heel right? lol

Yes. That is exactly what they are doing. They are making him out to be a prick in the media to make people hate him, build up the fight and hope people buy it to see him lose. Despite him probably being the best pound for pound fighter in the world and arguably ever in the ufc, nobody likes him. I suppose they might as well try and use that.

The using of that fight they had in the stare down at the media day is disgraceful. Both got condemned for it and there were fines handed out. Now they are using it. Dana White is slowly morphing into Vincent K. McMahon.

I wouldn't say slowly, tbh!

He's been trying to WWE-ify the thing with ages.

Dana is so desperate  CM Punk, using the Jones-Cormier conference videos (which he was acting all upity against), "we're back".

Ha! Why change a great organization and make it WWE like? I know the ratings are down but still. There must be better ways of doing it.
I guess he thinks the drama will bring in more eyes/dollars, it's daft though, they "hate" each other, beat seven bells out of each other, and suddenly are mad about each other.

Boxing seems to be doing the same thing lately.

Don't know who CM Punk is so been trying to find out what, if any, skills he has. He's a bjj white belt because...

"He’s showing up for two weeks at a time, training exclusively with me, 100 percent, then he’s out. Then he comes back six months later. So, there’s not been enough consistency to concern ourselves with belts."

Pretty good card with a few interesting pathways created I think now.

Faber vs Barao has got to be done if Barao wins.
Ferguson vs a top 15 guy next, maybe Miller if he still wants to fight.
Duffee vs Nelson.
Browne vs JDS if he beats Miocic.
Pettis won't want to wait until May for Khabib. So maybe Cerrone or Dos Anjos if they win and can turn around quick.
Lawler vs McDonald and then maybe the return of GSP afterwards.

UFC have nothing to lose. Punk will fight (not main event) and if hes successful, they got something. If not, he will go down as a novelty (kinda like Kimbo) that didnt work out.

But keep in mind Brock lost his first fight and a few fights later was World Champ so it all depends on how it goes down.

But Lesnar, pre diverticulitis, was a athletic monster, one of the top amateur wrestlers in college, just freaky dude. Lighting quick but as strong as an ox. CM Punk has no background in martial arts, does he? I'm talking legit, high level stuff.

Punk was a hot free agent, talked about, and the thing is, nobody has seen him fight. Hes a 0-0 guy and nobody cept Punk and those around him truly know how long hes been training for. Punk has Muay Thai which has been documented and all that time spent with Gracies he would have been training surely.

Lesnar of course was a freak defo and obviously came into MMA at a younger age which helped. He will not be taking on champions on his debut but people at the same level / weight as him which will make it a level playing field.

They'd probably be better waiting 4 months until Brock is a free agent for that, unless they think Brock is Bellator bound.
That would be such a kick in the nuts for Dana White

But Bellator is owned by Viacom. They have the cash to match whatever ufc will pay.

But I would imagine Brock would want to try and prove himself and go to ufc

I said a few days ago. A rematch against Overeem would be huge

He's brown belt at Ji Jitsu according to the articles coming out over his signing from mmafighting.com. I know he's still got no real fight experience but that's higher than most in this thread have him at in terms of martial arts expertise.

UFC can't really lose with this. Punk's bound to get some pro wrestling fans to buy the PPVS he is fighting on and he's the type of personality who will invoke in a reaction in fans. He is very late in the game to start a UFC career at 36 but anyone who has followed his career knew he wanted to get into UFC so none of this is a surprise.

There's a few reasons I think Brock may be Bellator bound, first up is indeed the Viacom money.

Secondly is the recent UFC Reebok deal. Brock could make a hell of a lot from sponsors.

Brock isn't really motivated by a challenge, especially at his age, he's more than happy to make a tonne of money and go back to his cabin in the woods with Sable.

Looks like Punks been training every day (some times twice a day) since November with Rener.
Middleweight is where he will be most likely.

UFC181 overall was good and exciting. Looking forward to the upcoming ones.

Some very brutal honesty for Brendan Schaub from Joe Rogan.

The full podcast is here, very good listen.

Rumours of Punk making his debut v Pandred in the undercard of Mcgregor at Croke Park next year.
Have a feeling theyll go down this route, put him on a stacked card to inflate buys instead of a risky main event v a nobody.

I want punk vs. green ranger... Imagine it. Punk will be trying to make Tommy bounce off the ropes and will stomp his foot as he punches and suddenly, you will hear the flute music and Tommy will morph into the green ranger. It will be epic. Especially if UFC hire JR as the commentator.

No chance

Mcgregor can sell out croke park alone if that ever happens

Punk can sell out an arena in the states. Although Pendred wouldnt be bad idea as a first opponent.

Don't know anything about UFC really but checked Pendred's record and he only has two losses. I assume he's not faced anyone decent, but even then it seems like a tough first opponent for Punk.

Nice weekend of fights starting tomorrow night with the TUF finale. I've watched the entire series, been pretty good. Rooting for Rose to pull off the win, looks like an absolute star. Esparza should be her toughest challenge yet though. Shame Felice lost when she did, she's got a great look as well as the personality to make people tune in to see her fight.

Saturday is Dos Santos finally returning to the octagon after over a year, last performance was the loss to Cain. Takes on Miocic, my money is on a dominant Dos Santos victory, still really hope he can get another shot at the title. Gonzaga/Mitrione on the same card (somebodies getting knocked out in that one), Overeem/Struve (yeah, somebodies getting knocked out in this one too) and Nate Diaz is back to take on dos Anjos which should be an awesome fight.

I think he should get a tough first opponent. He will sink or swim. He has 5 years at the most to make a go at this.

Pendred has only had two fights in the ufc and wasn't overly convincing in either. He is very beatable

Giving punk a nobody who has no record would be even more of a farce

Agreed, that's madness from a UFC perspective. They don't need CM punk in Ireland fighting in a time zone that is not an optimal time for USA viewers.

Great showings from Torres and Calderwood in the first two fights on the prelims, Calderwood fight was very good. A few of these fights should of made the main card.

Edit: Diaz missed weight at the weigh in's, fight goes ahead, fined 20% of his purse. Else, Overeem decided to just weigh in with his jeans and boots on like a fecking boss

The UFC are making all their foreign cards start at primetime in the USA now, so the fights are starting around 1am in Europe

Dos Anjos seems to have taken this fight a lot more seriously than Diaz who missed the open workouts yesterday and now weight today by almost half a stone! I'm a big Diaz fan but if he didn't really want to fight then why come back, I'm sure he will be game but it is still a letdown.

There's a backlash about Punk from a lot of mma fans, a lot on forums I've read refusing to pay for a ppv that he's on. Maybe getting him on stacked cards is the way to go.
I'm not a big WWE fan, but Ive read that the main reason he didn't become a major star in wrestling is because he couldn't attract the casual fans, and the fans he did have were internet based who streamed everything so never made WWE all that in terms of revenue.
Can't see him attracting anything close to what Brock achieved personally, hope I'm wrong. The sport needs a bit of buzz about it again
