The MMA thread

Yeah Rampage was reported about two days back and it turned out to be that, pretty shit announcement.

Machida in kill mode last night, destroys Dollaway within 30 seconds with a brutal kick to the body. fecking love this guy, really want to see him get another title shot.

For you UFC heads, is Conor McGregor actually any good? The hype around him would make you believe he's amazing, but is he, or is there a chance he'll get his head knocked in soon?

I think he is pretty good but not as great as he makes himself out to be. Will be interesting when he fights the likes of Mendes, Edgar, Swanson or Aldo. Then we'll see what he's really made of. Having said that, he disposed of Poirier pretty easily, who was top 5 at the time...

And is he well liked in the game? If I'm honest, I wouldn't mind him getting a beating if it shuts him up a bit.

Well he does what Dana White probably wants him to and that's sell tickets. Whether its for the huge following he has or whether its for all those wanting to see him get his head pummelled, either way, he sells tickets

Mcgregor will get Aldo next if he beats Siver

News just in, Dominic Cruz is injured again. So no title shot against TJ, Meaning Barao will probably get the next shot

Oh yeah, forgot he was scheduled already vs Siver. He'll be a good test for the Irishman, but I expect him to win it. Isn't Siver in some really good form lately?

He is always tough to beat, but I think he is past his best

He moved down to featherweight and hasn't set the world alight but if you look at his record, his loses are only against top fighters

Can't wait for Jones vs Cormier - UFC 182 - 3 Jan 2015. Who do you think is going to win?

Jones is the champ and virtually undefeated(don't count his disqualification as a loss). Considered the pound for pound best fighter in the world, he is spontaneous and quick. His biggest asset is his reach(longest arms of anyone in the UFC I believe) and height. He is also tough as nails having a broken toe in one fight and a finger in another and ignoring both to win. Has a wrestling background but not to a high level like Cormier. His rise to becoming the UFC Champ was meteoric and spectacular and the way he won that fight and all the rest of the fights since shows that he is really keen to stay champ. Jones has dominated all the fighters that he has come up against and even fought them with their supposed strengths. Going back to wrestling against Cormier will be tricky though. He is a tall lanky lad though so he might be able to take Cormier down.

Cormier has a excellent wrestling background and should be able to go the full 5 rounds if it reaches that. He is much shorter than Jones and seems to have great centre of gravity which can count in his favour. He is also pretty strong. He is also the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion and had broken his hand to win against Barnett so can handle the pain. Cormier has also had a short meteoric rise in the UFC but being the Strike Force Champion helped. He had to drop weight though to reach the 205lb limit but he has done so and his fight with Dan Henderson showed no tiredness from the man. He should be a handful for Jones. Cormier has a 100% defence record against takedowns I believe, showing how strong his wrestling background is.

Who do I fancy? Well, I think Jones will take it. He will use every dirty trick he knows, and he knows a few. Not that he is a dirty fighter but I can see it turning ugly. Cormier has excellent Wrestling and he hits like a Mac Truck however Jones has a reach advantage and should keep Cormier at a distance while doing damage. If Cormier can get Jones to the ground, which is possible if Jones might want to show off his wrestling skills, then Cormier might take a quick surprise win. Jones needs to use his head and I think he has that department down pat.

It's going to be an ugly fight though, both have been going at each other before and since the now famous weigh-in.

To be honest, I think if they had fought in September like was originally planned, Cormier might have won that. However since the "brawl", I think Jones is seriously more focused now and as I said, I believe he should win the fight.

If anyone wants an invite for MMAtracker send me a message. It's pretty great.

I've got 2 invites left.

I think Jones will win. And I am rooting for him too

I like DC, but Jones is my favourite fighter

Yeah, ok. That fight was hectic. Pity Alex got hurt and didn't get that second chance. Jones also broke his toe that fight didn't he?

*edit* Ok, Jones broke toe against Sonnen.

Dominic Cruz has done his ACL again, absolutely gutted for the guy thought he looked great on his comeback and was really looking forward to seeing him take on Dillashaw.

Gus should have beaten Jones, should of won the fight on the decision.

Cormier is an absolute animal. People can discredit Henderson for being old but the way he tossed him around like a ragdoll was crazy. Cormier won't be letting Jones just tea off on him at reach, he'll be getting in close and nullifying the reach advantage. Jones will be unbearable if he wins this, he's reaching Tito style level of cuntishness. Unbelievably pumped for this fight.

Gutted on the Cruz front, looked so awesome on his return. I don't think TJ is anywhere near as good as people are claiming but Barao didn't look all that great this weekend either. Would have loved to see Cruz destroy Dillashaw.

January is going to be insane... Jones vs Cormier, Silva vs Diaz, Gus vs Johnson, Weidman vs Vitor...

So many great fights, I can't wait.

Yeah, January is going to be pretty incredible, one of the best months of fights I've seen.

Jones/Cormier, Cerrone/Jury, McGregor/Siver, Gustafsson/Johnson, Henderson/Mousasi, Silva/Diaz and that's not even taking into account so many other awesome looking fights such as Philippou/Hall, Tate/McMann, Woodley/Gastelum, Henderson/Alvarez and more!

In other news, Punk has chosen Roufusport (the likes of Pettis, Askren, Belcher etc). No real surprise either as it's close to Chicago.

What the irish in here think about McGregor ?

And i want to see Cormier destroyed, he is so fake. :D

I don't know who I want to win Cormier or Jones. I started for Jones but a part of me wants to see him getting his ass kicked because he's so cocky.

You will have a problem to decide because Cormier is also extremely cocky.

Personally i want to see Gustafsson-Jones, once again. And Cormier is impressive but he is always blabbing, despite the fact that he has done nothing.
He should have tried to dominate Velasquez.

It will be on BT Sport for those that want to watch it without stream. Personally, I just download it the morning after.

Bit of a random question (and should maybe be in the boxing thread) but have any of you gimps any experience using a free-standing heavy bag?

I used to box a bit but can't be arsed going back to a gym and would quite like my own heavy bag. I've ever only used proper bags - hung from the ceiling - and I've read stuff online about the free-standing ones being a pain in the arse, as they keep moving/tipping over. I'm tallish and fairly heavy-handed (at least I was, back in the day!) so that could be a deal-breaker. Anyone got one at home? If so, how've you found it to use? Any recommended brands?

Had one. Complete shit waste of money. I would advise against it unless you just want to practice your jabs

Why don't you hang one up? Can normal ceilings not hold the weight of a big bag? Because I'm planning on converting my garage into a sort of mini gym soon.

Punk Q&A before the weigh in's was hilarious, mostly a load of guys pissed up.

Weigh in's are live now, feck me I'm pumped for tomorrows show.
