The MMA thread

Was so excited to watch but my sky box decided not to record it. I stayed up to watch uneventful prelims but was very much looking forward to the main event

Big show tonight.

Quite a tough ask for Hendricks/Lawler to match their first fight which was fantastic, but still pumped for that one. Finally the return of Pettis too, can't stand Melendez so hoping Pettis returns in style.

Also got Travis Browne looking to bounce back after the poor showing against Werdum. Up against Schaub, I'm expecting an massacre with Browne finishing him likely in the first. Looking forward to the Ferguson fight too. Faber also on the undercard and Pennington too, should be a really good night.

Just saw this.

Not sure what McGregor is doing with that Italian flag...

nice start for the prelims...

Raquel Pennington put to sleep Ashlee Evans-Smith with just 1 second to go in the first round. Beautiful. out cold. xddd

Awesome opener, that was one mean choke. Bit gutted it didn't get to the second though, could of been bloody as hell looking at that cut.

What age is punk?

It will draw big numbers no matter what

He should defo go welterweight if he can

Hes 36. Hes been doing vids with Gracie, probably been training which would make sense.
Looks like middleweight from his words but wow, that will bring a lot of interest.

I think it was Dana who said that if Punk joined he would fight another 0-0 person (same streak). He will draw for them.

Bring back Ken Shamrock. Maybe they could fight over a foam Intercontinental belt.

Up for Gil and Lawlor tonight

But I don't mind either of the champs so it's all good

I reckon one title will change hands though

Lawler new champion then. Another decision that could have gone either way.

Hendricks vs Lawler 3 hopefully will bring peace of mind with a nice KO finish.

ps. that KO from Josh Samman, the best of the night. need a .gif to watch it over and over

Delighted but was very conterversial

A judge scored 49-46 and I automaticaly assumed it was for Hendricks. No chance in hell did Lawlor win 4 rounds

But out of 5 round only 3 I was sure of. 5 was lawlors and 2 and 3 was Hendricks.

I'm happy for Lawler as he's such an exciting and likeable fighter but you're right. I don't see how he possibly could have won 4 rounds. I had it 48-47 Hendricks, and even then I felt I could have given him Round 1 as well.

He's done Muay Thai forever and has been working with the Gracie's for a few years, he hasn't got a terrible background for MMA (this move has been largely expected since he quit wrestling in January).

It'll be interesting to see what they do with him, to get the most money from him they need him to fly up the rankings a la Brock, but he's 36. It will not be a certainty he makes it anywhere.

I don't think they can quicken his rise that much, as he isn't a draw on the level of Lesnar. I'm sure it'll be a bit faster than average, especially if he can talk his way into a few fights.

Have to feel for Hendricks, felt like he won that comfortably enough. So did Herb....

That was Hendricks raising his own arm.

I think Hendricks did anything but enough to win that fight. He won 2 and 3 clearly, but that was it. 5 was Lawlor's. The other 2 were a judgement call and I would have given them both to Lawlor personally.

I don't think that holding somebody to stop the fight or running away merits a win. Hendricks was a disgrace in the fifth. His corner told him to go win the fight so he thinks the best thing to do is try and hold Lawlor against the fence for 5 minutes? Well it didn't work and I was delighted.

I love Hendricks. I thought we'd have seen the best Hendricks ever considering he allegedly had no bicep and a broken leg in the first fight. He's a brilliant fighter. But he didn't come to fight last night. He came to wrestle. The strategy clearly was to win a couple of rounds and then hold him up against the fence for the rest in case he got hit.

Anyway, when I heard 49-46 also I presumed it was for Hendricks. No way did Lawlor win 4 rounds. 2 and 3 were so clearly Johnny's. I don't know what fight that judge was watching.

I gave Lawlor 1,4 and 5 though. I was about 51% sure he won 1, 60% sure he won 4 and completely sure he won 5.

Overall Hendricks hit Lawlor with a lot more and took him down 5 times. Everything he did practically happened in 2 and particularly in 3. He did nothing in 4 and 5. Lawlor did more damage.

Anyway, that was what I thought.

I think signing CM Punk is a ridiculous decision. It's nothing more than a publicity stunt. He's 36 and has no MMA experience. They're hoping he will have the same impact financially as Lesnar. Lesnar is a legitimate athlete with serious pedigree. He's also a prick. People paid money to see him lose.

Punk is not a legitimate contender. He's also very popular. I don't think people will buy PPVs to see him get his ass whipped. It might improve it the first time, but after that I highly doubt it.

Ufc sales are down 40% apparently. They have lost their 4 biggest PPV draws (Lesnar, GSP, Anderson and Chuck) in recent years. I know Anderson is coming back but we'll see if he still has the same draw after his invincibility has been smashed. They are desperate to get people to buy their product again.

I can't see CM Punk doing anything for that bar the first PPV. It must be annoying for fighters like Ben Askren who can't win a contract.
