The MMA thread

Gutting. Faber is as good a short notice replacement as possible, but UFC is being decimated with injuries at the moment.

Between the amount of shows, injuries, the trt and the pointless hype around a lot of fights it is getting less and less interesting.

Too many shows lacking strength in depth of meaningful fights... too many fights is leading to too many injuries the trt issue needs tackling before mma becomes the next cycling and the pre fight hype resembles wwe rather than early mma

oh for the return of pride

I still really enjoy it but there is too many events, and they're so uneven in terms of quality. Last Saturday's is the first one in ages that I just didn't bother to watch even though I was up as there was just nothing that struck me as interesting, although from what I've read I should check out the main event anyway.

I'm just not sure what's causing all the injuries. GSP hasn't fought more than twice a year since 2007, Cain since 2009, Anderson since 2008, dos Santos since 2010. 2-3 fights a year seems a reasonable expectation for the top fighters for me. Pride fighters were doing that in a night at times!

I'm a WWE fan, and tbh if I want to see that, I'll watch WWE!

It seems so fecking stupid to watch them pretend to hate each other for weeks, and after 15 mins +/- they're fecking bum buddies.

UFC does not need half ass storylines. The only one half good at it is Sonnen, though I'll admit I near pissed myself with Anderson Silvas "he can come to my BBQ comment".

2013 had great fights though, and there were 19 title fights which is pretty good. Too many fights is not why there are more injuries, if anything, the fighters are fighting less than they used to. I think the fact that they now have medical insurance under the UFC means they're no longer willing to risk fighting with an injury. That makes sense in my head, they don't have to worry about medical bills and don't have to put their health/career at more risk so why bother fighting when you can sit out? It's the smart thing to do.

As for the WWE thing, I think it's impossible for the fighters to win.

Ronda is a really interesting personality and kinda crazy, fans pissed about her and call her a crazy bitch.
Chael is funny and intelligent, does the whole WWE thing, fans pissed because he doe the WWE thing.
Cain is quiet. Fans pissed because he's boring.
Jon Jones is unbeaten champion and p4p best fighter, fans pissed because he's "arrogant".

There is no one way to hype a fight without some section of the fans hating you. I don't really care what the pre-fight hype looks like, I just wanna watch people punch each other in the face. If the pre fight stuff happens to be hilarious (Nick Diaz and GSP) then all the better.

Oh and to complain about trt but wish for Pride...really?

EDIT: If by pre hype you meant the UFC promos for the fights then...yeah I agree. They're usually shit.

YOUUUUU AND MEEEEEE! MEEEEEEE AND YOUUUUUU!

I was looking over the list of current champions, and it looks very, very strong to me. I started to wonder who would be the first current champion to lose their belt, and who would be the last. It's damned tricky, though, most current champs look nearly unbeatable.

Anyone want to take this list of Champions and put them in order, of how long each will keep their belt, from longest to shortest? This isn't meant to take into account how long each has already had their best, just who will lose or vacate their belt last from today.

Here's my attempt:
1. Jose Aldo
2. Cain Velasquez
3. Renan Barao
4. Jon Jones
5. Chris Weidman
6. Demetrious Johnson
7. Ronda Rousey
8. Johny Hendricks (assuming he beats Lawler)
9. Anthony Pettis

1. DJ
2. Rousey
3. Cain
4. Aldo
5. Barao
6. Jones
7. Weidman
8. Pettis
9. Whoever becomes WW. I think Hendricks vs Lawler can go either way.

Flyweight, women's BW and heavyweight are probably the weakest divisions so I went with them for having the longest champions.

Agree with everything except Weidman who should be in the bottom. With Belfort, Machida, Mousasi, Jacare and other LHW like Rashad who may considering dropping down, I don't see him holding on to that belt too long.

I fancy Belfort to brutally knock him out, the TRT version that is.

Anybody else here feels that Belfort is on something more than just TRT? The changes in his physique as well his facial features are more in line with HGH abuse.

HGH Gut - Check
Protruding facial features - Check
Veins popping out - Check

Its so blatantly obvious he is on something.

I refuse to believe that his features would change this drastically due to age within 2.5 years.

I'm tempted to agree with you, but I had a really hard time picking, I moved guys up and down the list.

Each has a pretty interesting story in their division, and a compelling argument for being dominant over all the other fighters therein.

Johnson looked amazing against Benavidez, who I thought would win (boy was I wrong!). If he's gonna start knocking people out he may become nearly unstoppable. I like Dodson, one one hand I thought he took the Johnson fight much too lightly, he seemed happy just to be there. But if he tightens up his game he has the power to knock out anyone. But other than that I don't see anyone else beating Johnson.

Who can threaten Cain? With Cormier dropping down it's pretty stark, but I wouldn't back Cormier anyway. Browne looks really dangerous, But he would be a 3/1 or 4/1 dog, at least. If Overeem ever got his act together he could beat anyone, but that's not all that likely either. Cain could well retire without another loss.

Rousey is a hard one for me to call, I haven't really seen many fights, but it seems he has 1, maybe 2 serious rivals on the horizon. But she's young and not many fighters retire undefeated, she'll have to face the up and coming fighters for years, and I don't think she's as well rounded as someone like Jon Jones or Jose Aldo. But how well rounded are her opponents?

Aldo looks like an unstoppable beast, but Mendes and Edgar are extremely talented opponents, so there's a chance there. I'm probably being a bit biased, Weidman showed that anyone can be made to look mortal, but I can't see anyone beating Aldo.

Likewise Barao is pretty much a slightly smaller Aldo, who is gonna take this guy out? I don't think Faber has much of a chance, and besides him I don't see anyone besides Cruz being a threat.

Jones would have been much higher up the list before Gustafsson made him look beatable. I still think Jones is a favorite, but the rematch there is a bigger danger to his belt than any of the above fighters have to deal with.

Weidman still has to worry about fighting Silva again, I think if Silva comes back and looks his old self again, with the swagger and arrogance, then I think he'll get a third shot, if only for the money to be made. Then Machida looked incredible against Munoz, I'm really excited to see Weidman vs. Machida this year, hopefully. I'd take Machida, but again I'm probably biased, I like that karate style.

Pettis is quite good, but Melendez and Henderson are serious threats, and Pettis hasn't had that many UFC fights to judge him on. Still, he may not lose for years.

Hendricks is great, but he fights aggressively and gives his opponent a chance to win with his style. Condit looked great against Kampmann, Lawler looks very dangerous and Rory McDonald is very young and should get himself back into a more aggressive mode if he really is reinvigorated. But again, Hendricks might have the belt for years.

I personally think that a juiced up Belfort is a bigger threat to Weidman than AS. Belfort is stronger and is very unpredictable these days. I highly doubt Weidman will get past the current Belfort.

He mainly just looks older. Brow protrudes the same. He has slightly more vascularity but he also has a lower % of BF now too.

He's absusing TRT for sure, and probably HGH, but you can't just look at him and say it shows. He has old man body, that's why he is looking different.

Generally correct tabloid TMZ reached out to Silva's manager Jorge Guimaraes, who minced no words in discussing Anderson Silva's future in the sport.
"Trust me, he will be back," said Guimaraes. "He had his second X-ray [Thursday] and everything looks great. It was a clean break so the nerves are okay. He’s already started physical therapy and he’s moving his toes."

feck yeah

Massive fight for Tavares, I'm a fan of his. Dana has come out and said it's the biggest of his career to date. A win tonight will be huge for him.

Love me a UFC event in midweek. I quite enjoyed the Singapore one which people weren't too interested in and loved the main event, certainly going into this expecting a better event too.

Costa Philipou fighting tonight?
