The MMA thread

Hall landed a lot more strikes than Gastelum in the third round, and the only thing Gastelum had over him was that one takedown. Which lead to him being reversed.

Gastelum also probably scored points for octagon control, he was the one mainly pushing the pace, and also had Hall pushed up against the cage for a portion of the round.

Anyone think Hendricks can beat GSP? I thought Hendricks was much more convincing against Condit than GSP was. However I've only started watching recently, I've only seen each fight twice as I've been going backwards through the UFC #s.

She was ok but the 2 they normally have cannot be beaten for me.

Brittany is my current favourite.

Nah, don't get me wrong, she's alright but Arianny Celeste is the hottest chick on this planet.

On a sidenote, IMO Kelvin Gastellum won too, he controlled the action and kept going forward. It was a very close fight though.

I watched one a while back on YouTube that really showed the mental pressure that some of these guys are under, one fight just took everything out of the guy and he was never the same, will take a look for the name now.

Edit: it's called The Man in the Arena, but you gotta sign in to watch it.

Anyone got any favourite MMA documentaries?

Just watched Once I Was a Champion about the life (and death) of Evan Tanner. Enjoyed it.
There was one with that featured Dustin Poirier a lotwhich was alright, "Fightville".

Like Water with Anderson Silva is really, really good. Full video on Youtube.

Fedor, the baddest man on the planet.

The Smashing Machine - Mark Kerr

The Anderson one or The Smashing Machine are both really good, enjoyed them a lot. Still haven't seen Choke with Rickson Gracie.

That one looks interesting as well Mick, will watch it tomorrow cheers! Also, I stuck a tenner on Sonnen to win by decision at 9/1. Just threw away a tenner but makes the fight slightly more interesting.

I saw the Anderson one on Netflix last night. Pretty good.

The Smashing Machine is the best one I've seen. Some brutal nhb fights in it too.

Some big fights happening tomorrow. Looking forward to see how Cormier & Melindez debut in the UFC.

Can't wait for tonight's card. It looks spectacular. I'm praying for a Cormier victory. Spotted him a few years ago and he seems like the nicest guy in professional sports as well as being a great prospect. Some of his interviews about losing his father and young daughter are heartbreaking. I'm too old to follow individual footballers so he's pretty much the only mainstream athlete that I hero worship now! Mir is a real threat to anyone though, and I'll be truly devastated if he wins. Just to prove my Cormier man-crush from 2011:

Delighted to see Walker win too. He's probably not going to do much beyond the odd novelty bout against Lashley, Batista etc, but what an athlete. Have you seen a heavyweight called Daniel Cormier yet? Former Olympic level wrestler with impressive striking too. Works in some surprisingly good uppercuts and hooks for a wrestler who's new to the sport Could be a threat at heavyweight before long, although he's on the short side for a heavyweight. Looks like he's carrying quite a bit of body fat too, but when you compare a Fedor's gas tank to a Carwin's its pretty clear that being leaner doesn't always correlate with being better conditioned.

That and Gilbert v Henderson are two massive fights. Can't wait.

If Melendez loses (I think he will) it will be a very bad time for that camp.

The 2 Diaz bros are coming off bad defeats and of course jake shields has been a disaster since entering the UFC.

I like Mir too, so not overly fussed who wins.

Its hard to see how it can be a bad card. I hate the Diaz brothers but they're never in dull fights. Its hard to see how Melendez-Henderson will be anything other than an action fight. Even if one fighter has a wrestling advantage they're both active off their backs. Cormier probably has the best work rate of any heavyweight that isn't Velasquez and Mir is a live threat either on the feet or especially on the ground.

I really like Frank Mir but him winning doesn't do anything for the division overall. On the other hand, Cormier has said that he won't fight Cain which is annoying as feck. So basically, I don't really give a shit who wins.

It all depends on how he looks tonight and there's so many question marks about his ability to cut weight but Cormier vs Jones at light-heavyweight looks mental on paper.

What is the story behind his weight cutting? I've read bits and pieces but he was trying to cut weight and went into kidney failure or something?

Aye, supposedly he was trying to cut weight for the 2008 Olympics, tried to cut far too much water weight and nearly killed himself. Wrestlers are notorious for attempting ridiculous dehydration cuts!

Ah right, I don't see why he wouldn't be able to cut down to 205 if he did it properly over a long period of time. I heard Benson Henderson saying how his weight cut is done slowly, over a long period of time and he is a huge lightweight.

Also, Mir looked in brilliant shape at the weigh ins I thought. Best shape he's been in or a while and seems to have much less chubbiness.

Easy win there, bar a few decent kicks Mir offered feck all :boring:
