The MMA thread

McGregor appears to be the main focus on the websites and in the press conference following the event.

A lot of interest in him. Seems very humble and happy and hilariously admitting he picked up his dole last week and now as just been handed 60k for fight of the night.

I'm not surprised. He looked very slick.

Pretty rangey for that weight class too so can see him having a lot of success.

He's an engaging character too so the UFC will love him.

"Matt Mitrione is coming off a huge win. On Saturday, he won with a 19-second knockout of Philip de Fries. It was a hugely needed win after Mitrione suffered two losses in his last two fights. Now Mitrione is using the spotlight to talk about trans fighter Fallon Fox.

While on the MMA Hour, Mitrione repeatedly called the postoperative transgender female a "he." Mitrione also called Fox, who is scheduled to fight again in May, a sociopath and a freak.

"Because she's not a he. He's a he," he said. "He's chromosomally a man. He had a gender change, not a sex change. He's still a man. He was a man for 31 years. Thirty-one years. That's a couple years younger than I am. He's a man. Six years of taking performance de-hancing drugs, you think is going to change all that? That's ridiculous.

"That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak," he continued. "And I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That's disgusting. You should be embarrassed yourself. And the fact that Florida licensed him because California licensed him or whoever the hell did it, it's an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that.

The woman that's fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again, because that's disgusting and I'm appalled by that."

Mitrione earned a Bachelor's degree from Purdue in Law and Society, with minors in supervision and communications, and he doesn't have a medical degree. It's unlikely that he examined Fox, yet he speaks as if he is aware of the particulars of her anatomy.

If Mitrione doesn't think Fox should be allowed to fight, that's his opinion. State commissions don't agree with him, but he's not being forced to watch her fight. He is also not being forced to fight her, and the women who are walking into a fight with Fox know her history. They don't need to be saved by Mitrione.

For him to go off on such a hate-filled, uninformed tirade is just plain sad, particularly for someone who has been involved with anti-bullying initiatives in the past. Hopefully, Mitrione will keep bullied trans people in mind the next time he calls anyone a "freak.""

He has as expected been suspended.

Controversial topic, and there will be a lot of people that agree with him, but there was more civilized ways of discussing this issue.

No way of telling really. I've went back and watched as many of his youtube fight videos that I could find and his takedown defence looks solid.

Skip to 0:43 to see him defend a single leg.

4:45 here.

Obviously in the UFC the wrestling is of a whole different calibre but I think he'll be okay.

Good stuff. I always think UK/Irish fighters are at a disadvantage in MMA because none of them will have done wrestling in school, whereas most Yanks/Canadians have been on the mat since they were nippers.

Yea true but then look at some of the Brazilians, they've done alright! I'd be more worried about his actual ground game, only a purple belt in BJJ, got into some poor positions in a few fights I watched and both his only 2 losses have been from submissions.

Aye but they're probably taught BJJ in kindergarten. All us paddys do is charge round the place, kicking footballs. Actually, that probably means he's got awesome leg kicks. Swings and roundabouts.

I'm glad Kelvin got into the final as I think that his wrestling background will give him a fighting chance (I posted earlier that I felt there would only be one winner believing that Uriah would fight Samman), he's really surprised me and I hope he can put up a fight against somebody with such ferocious power and experience.

Its been the best season for a long time (the season before this being particularly atrocious), but I still don't really understand from a competitive point of view what Uriah was even doing in the house, but business wise it has been terrific, they really couldn't have hoped for better from his devastating style.

Here is hoping for a competitive fight!

McGregor and Pendred did quite well on the late late just now, they handled the inevitable "violent cage fighting" questions very well, and they're both very well spoken and intelligent guys so it was good to see.

Looks bad either way. Did you watch the prelims earlier? One of the fighters got dropped on his head twice while he was attempting an armbar. This card has actually been really good despite the talent level being quite low.
