The MMA thread

I mean, as a bit of a casual, this card doesn’t warrant the 1am-6am shift.

I’ve started to think this is flawed logic though, as the un-fancied cards end up being bangers

Damnn. Harsh on you guys in Europe.

7pm early prelims, 11pm main card, for me, so not bad at all luckily.

Definitely not the best card so understandable to skip it.

We will definitely have some nice highlights for sure. Some of the local guys for sure being set up for some nice victories in front of their people. Many of these guys would want to make an impact to get their names out there too.

But yeah, looking at the card, there is no fight I'm looking forward to. None, which is quite rare. Well, maybe the main event just for how morbid it would be if by some miracle, Sean gets to win

Yeah you’ve got it sussed as far as MMA viewing goes. Is it Chile you’re in?

Rugby World Cup starts this weekend anyway, so I’ll be screenblind by midnight as it is.

Id actually take a Sean win, just for the outrageous shit he’d talk plus how badly Izzy would take it. Doubt it’ll happen though, and it’ll probably be a horrendously negative fight

Yep, Chile.

Niice, Chile is playing the Rugby World Cup for the first time so I'll definitely be watching too. Not the biggest Rugby fan myself although I played at school and went to a match at the NZ WC (Scotland vs Argentina). Plus I met Dan Carter when he visited Te Puke with a few other players to promote the WC.

Let me tell you a story...

Back in 2011, I had to leave NZ to renew my VISA so I went to Samoa to relax for 2 weeks. Went there without even studying the place. Just with a piece of paper where I wrote "Lalomanu", which was the beach I wanted to go to after a 5 minute google search. Anyways... I got to Lalomanu and become friends with this old British couple (the husband was a carbon copy of the Jurassic Park owner). They were like 60-70 years old maybe. So they told me they were in Samoa for their son's wedding, who was marrying the daughter of the religious leader and church minister of that part of the island (they are all Christians), a very wealthy Samoan. I was like Ohh ok, nice. Then I met the son and to my surprise, he was a massive Samoan Rugby Player who played in some England club (I guess he was adopted at some point). We spent some time together for a few days and he drove us (his parents, a Bulgarian girl I met there  and me) around in his Jeep. Good times.

Anyway, talking to the son, when I told him I'm Chilean, he asks me if I know "Mundi", and I'm like "feck yeah, we went to the same school, I was classmate and best mate of his younger brother and we have been neighbours all my life". Turns out they were big friends and played together in the club in England so he was kinda ecstatic. "Mundi" was one of the first Chilean professional players and played in "Los Cóndores" (the Chilean NT) for many years. Currently he is the Coach of the "Rugby 7" national team and has been doing a fantastic job.

What a small world!

Nice! Do you remember who the Samoan rugby player was?

Should be 3-1 Strickland but no doubt but 2-2 or 3-1 Izzy. Strickland doesn’t his best not to leave it to the cards though

Glad he got the decision on the cards as it was deserved, not often a champ gets beat on points. I wouldn’t have been surprised at all if they’d given it to Izzy though

I would have been shocked

Strickland clearly won, but how many times does a Champ get a dodgy decision and I think the amount of strokes thrown were similar, with Strickland having much better success.

I only saw the last fight since my son woke me up early. What was with the reports of all the homophobia towards City Kickboxing?

I never thought I would say this when it comes to Srickland, but that is the lesser of two evils.

I can’t believe I’ve woken up to Sean Strickland being an MMA champion.

Is there a better feeling watching Izzy going backwards for 25 minutes straight and getting so little reward out of his boring defensive counterattacking style!
25 minutes, going backwards. How come he never felt worried and started going forward instead, he could try to mix it up, make Strickland think a bit. Nothing. Just keeps backing away, keeping himself out of striking distance, hoping the judges will love his little leg kick taps. Absolutely glorious.

Strickland had the perfect game plan. His defence was on point and Izzy couldn't handle the constant pressure. He had no answer to Strickland's boxing. I don't think Izzy fully recovered from the shock of getting put on his arse in round one.

Manel Kape called out Kai Kara-France at the end of his fight and called him a f****t, then I guess Strickland's cornerman did call Adesanya a cock sucker, although I think that's reach.

He literally said he did nothing but wrestle this camp. And i am sure his corner urged him to try to grapple and wrestle after second round. I think that him and his corner might have other ideas and plans going in to the fight, but he rather quickly falls back to the style of fighting he feels more comfortable in. It seem to work rather well for him.

Reach around? :wenger:

Radtke too issued an apology? Not sure who/what he abused?

Dana said that a rematch for Izzy looks the likeliest option. I hope he reconsiders that. I had no issue with him getting the immediate Pereira rematch as he was a long-reigning and dominant champion at that point, but this was literally his first defence since regaining the belt and he lost in convincing fashion and looked boring and timid in the process.

I'd much rather see some movement in the division: Strickland vs DDP and Adesanya vs Khamzat (if he gets past Costa) would be great fresh matchups that could shake up the division.
