The MMA thread

Should be a good one tonight. The main event specially. High level fight between the british George Hardwick (12-1), lightweight champ of cage warriors, vs Abdul-Kareem Al-Selwady (14-3), the Pride of Palestine.

I was just watching a video about Aljo and O'Malley. Gonna be a fun fight. Aljo said it's 99% chance this is his last fight at this weight.

Very good fighter. Secured a contract after a top performance.

Once again, 5/5 of the winners got signed.

Taps with 1 second left in the round!

If she held off and allowed herself to be choked unconscious as the round ended but immediately came to and was then able to stand and go to her corner unassisted would the fight be stopped or nah?

Yeah I remember Merab got slept and woke up after the fight ended. He was celebrating like he won but they gave the submission to Ricky Simon.

Unless you can do it without the ref noticing it, chances are its gonna be stopped.

Cheers, guess it makes sense too as they don't want to encourage fighters refusing to tap.

Those are fast fast hands. I know hes not very liked, and Sterling is a more complete fighter, but damn, hes precise!

It kinda was to be fair
I don’t think so. He wasn’t stopping the shots, he was just moving around a bit in between getting bombs thrown in his face.
More stoppages should be like that. He ended up turtling and giving up his back when it was stopped

Wow. O’Malley succeeded where TJ, Sandhagen, and Yan (twice) failed. feck me sideways it’s a funny old game.
I consider all 3 far superior fighters to O’Malley. Maybe I’ve been underestimating him

I think O'Malley is a bit like McGregor on his rise to the top. Very good striker, lacking a bit in other areas but their personality (and look in O'Malley's case), can make them seem a bit of a clown.

It's entirely possible O'Malley can meet a top wrestler and get beaten up but at the same time he has that striking ability to knock out almost anyone in the division.

I’ll have to watch it.

Btw do you think he beat Yan? I thought he got bloody lucky with that decision

I only watched the fight once. I think it was a pretty close fight and you could give it either way without it being a robbery.

Going into the fight I thought that Yan would completely manhandle him but O'Malley did pretty well.

Yep, I get the feeling it’s one I need to watch back and I might be surprised.

Im trying to imagine him without the clown shit. If he had the professionalism and demeanour of say Sandhagen. I think I’d appreciate his skills a lot more then

Ultimately I think the clowning around does two things, firstly it means people underestimate the fighter as if they are only a joker and not a contender meaning people want to tune in to see if the fighter is actually good as they move to more difficult competition. Secondly the fighter becomes either loved and people want to watch them fight or hated and people want to see them get knocked out.

I've seen a lot of these kind of fighters over the years like Chael, Conor, Colby, O'Malley, Paddy the Baddy etc and their skillset is often underestimated.

But…..but he was the greatest. Sorry, had to do it.

Yeah I actually think it’s the weed thing, like I can’t accept that someone who regularly smokes weed (or at least professes to) could make it to the top of a professional sport

That seemed like a early stoppage, to me. Marc Goddard bringing some 'british boxing ref' energy to the UFC. Better early than late etc but he always seems to stop them a tad too early.

I agree with Dixie.

It's not really one I have that strong of an opinion about either way but it's not like Aljo was just covering up, he was still scrambling and preventing O Malley from getting in some proper G&P.

I kinda feel like in a championship fight you need to let it go on a bit longer than he did.

I might have been a bit harsh on Goddard in general, but I do think this one was a tad early. He was still scrambling.

I know Dana wants the Chito fight because of the movie vibe to defeat your nemesis, and probably that's what we'll get in december. O'Malley will go to that fight as favorite because Chito hasn't been convincing on his top fights. Suga should beat him without a problem and Dana would love to keep building his kid name as a defending champion

But i'd like to see Sean against the likes of Dvalishvili and Cejudo, where he wont be the favorite. It feels better rooting for a champion when you know it could be the last day at the throne.

Best performance I've seen from Garry! Fought perfectly.

Bit depressing to see him try and pass himself off as a Conor McGregor clone. I've heard him interviewed a few times and he doesn't speak remotely like McGregor. He's from Portmarnock ffs. All this WWE style fight promotion is tacky as feck. But maybe that's the best way to make money? Could he not create a more original (and likeable) made up persona though?

I'm praying the UFC put him in with Shavkat next and he gets brought back down to Earth, such an unlikely twat.

Aside from the cockiness the shit with Neil Magny was manufactured from the smallest comment that I don't think Magny meant in the way Garry took it at all.

And then there was the one Geoff Neal debacle... how he thought walking around as a pale skinny white lad with black man's mugshot printed on a t-shirt was a good look I don't know.

By all accounts he’s a nice humble guy when he’s not promoting fights.

Although they used to say that about McGregor too….

I swear he was nothing like this a year or so ago even? Which makes it even stranger. I get that it's him getting attention for his fights but yeah he's quickly becoming very cringe and unlikeable.

He’s been watching too many Chael videos. Swear he’s a bigger WWE fan than MMA fan

Not even a year ago. Look at how his accent changes from the videos following him around before the fight to how he speaks in the press conference and on the night of the fight. Doing his best McGregor impression with a fake D12 accent. Bizarre.

Am i reading this right? Ufc fight times this weekend are in the middle of the afternoon? fecking main event clashes with the England rugby

Probably, I think they're 12 hours ahead of the US East Coast which is obviously what they cater for.
