The MMA thread

So smooth. Never liked the guy but it was brilliant when he said 'feck you' and nearly decked Costa.

Congrats to any Brits in the thread, 2nd UFC Champion after Bisping.

But he'll need to defend the title once to qualify as a "real" champion.

I only managed the first few fights of the main card before sleep got me, but it seemed like everyone was struggling. Even the lighter weights were looking knackered after the first round.
And tbf to Leon, he is English….we don’t cope very well in even the slightest changes in environment
He went there two weeks prior to the fight to acclimatise, but maybe that wasn't enough. He has some of those same tendencies in his general fights, though, but there's not normally someone of Usman's calibre there to exploit them, so it could be a combination of things.

I am certain he has a gear to go up if he fights like a champion. Not saying he should have hubris, rather, just the belief that he belongs at the very top; it'll make the world of difference, imo.

We have seen upsets in the past and assume rematch will go way of the favourite but it’s not always a sure thing. Rose vs Joanna was a huge upset and Rose looked even better in the rematch. Dillishaw v Barao. Same again huge upset and looked better in the rematch. I think we will see a better version of Leon Edwards in the rematch
Yeah but those two didn't spend the first fight getting soundly beaten.

Usman would've won 4 rounds to 1, so unless Edwards improves significantly, Usman should win the rematch. I see this more as a Hasim Rahman / Lennox Lewis situation.

Only just caught up on this, been avoiding the results.

Rockhold v Costa was totally insane. Never seen a fighter so exhausted. I would have had every penny on Luke getting stopped at some point.

I did not think Edwards could pull that out of the fire. I was pretty much resigned to a comfortable loss, but that was brilliant. In theory Usman "should" win a rematch, but it depends on how he recovers, that kind of brutal knockout will be tough to recover from and be the same dominant, come forward fighter.

Be interesting to see Usman's reaction. When you suffer a highlight reel ko like that, it can make you a bit gun shy. Everyone's been telling him how great he is etc, a lot of people spent more time this week talking about Usman fighting Chimaev in his next fight than this fight with Edwards. He seems like the type of person that should bounce back but that air of invincibility he had is now gone.

Not to sound fully Chael Sonnen with the wrestling terminology but can anyone think of a better face/good guy turn than Rockhold the other night? Totally transformed him from a cringey twat to a badass. Bizarre fight but the “feck you”s before he blasted Costa, and the blood smearing was gross but some warrior shit. I hope he retires because I don’t like the idea of a world where I watch a Rockhold fight where I like him

 That fight was just utterly surreal. I'm still smiling every time I think about it, and I have no clue how it went the distance.

Exactly my thoughts!

Is it just me or was that the most exhausted a fighter has ever been in mid-fight (if we leave the DADA vs Kimbo Slice fiasco aside)?
Rockhold was literally bent over with his hands on his knees in the middle of the round, with Costa standing right in his face. It's almost disrespectful, but he looked dead on his feet, and i'm surprised he lasted the full 15.

The UFC could really do with a proper Africa card - maybe in Nigeria. Ngannou, Izzy, and Usman would do it in a heartbeat I would imagine.

Last year lyin Dana said there would be one in this year.

Good night of fights. 5 contracts to the 5 winners awarded tonight, including 21year old South african, Cameron Saaiman. Now the youngest UFC fighter on the roster.

A 17 year old mexican is going to fight soon in the DWCS. Would be wild he gets a contract...

Didn’t project far enough; mentioned Aspinall going down wrecking the cash cow for Dana because he’d have to push Pimblett into the centre stage before he’s ready or where he’ll face fighters who will exploit his standup. And then Edwards comes up and claims the belt and also takes Aspinall’s headliner spot.

So the stage is set - cash cow in place, so I wonder whether the newfound asset and gateway to a fortune via stadia like Wembley selling out is going to be protected or will he be risked. I think there will be a rematch on the cards if anyone beats Edwards now.

From Edwards perspective, he’s really got an opportunity to make a fortune now. Very interesting year to 18 months coming up in that division.

@Name Changed et al - here's your 'lucky' shot for you...

Don't know how many listen to the MMA Hour but to borrow a line from NY Ric, some people need to learn the difference between lucky and improbable.

Masvidal also planned the knee against Askern, but needed a lot of luck to pull it off. Coaches plan on a wide range of scenarios to give their fighters options on how to win. Most down pan out, a few that are very low percentage occasionally do.

Great to see DJ claim the ONE title, brilliant finish from him.

Shame he isn't still in the UFC, I think there's a good chance this man might still be the best flyweight on the planet.
