The MMA thread

Machida has a shot. Whatever happens will tell us more about Jones than anything else. He looks invincible at the moment but I don't think he has fought anyone that has bee able to properly test him yet. 'Page isn't a smart enough fighter and Shogun was coming off injury again.

Machida if he can execute a solid game plan should pose the first real threat to Jones.

The ideal scenario for Machida is probably going to be being able to keep the fight standing and using his distance control to make Jones chase him. If Jones gets frustrated we could see Machida start picking and overly aggressive Jones apart with his leaping straight lefts. We might even get to see Jones' chin tested for the first time.

On the other hand with his length Jones might simply out elusive Machida and we could get a snoozefest.

Or Jones just blasts him out one way or another.

I still think Machida will help us answer some of those unknowns with Jones.

Sonnen vs Silva 2 in Brazil (If Sonnen gets past Munoz) ?

We've already started worrying about that," White said about security when Chael Sonnen meets Anderson Silva for the second time at UFC Rio II. "We will have presidential-type security down there for him. The biggest fear would be should Chael win that night. We'd have to f------ dig a tunnel underneath the Octagon."

But White said he likes the idea of Silva fighting his most hated rival in front of his Brazilian fans. And he said the proper security procedures could ensure a safe environment for Sonnen and everyone else in attendance.

For his part, Sonnen has been asked about security in Brazil, and replied characteristically.

I'm def willing to go over there," said Sonnen. "I am sure there would be some security concerns, but those guys and their blow darts don't scare me."

UFC security experts are already combing through footage from UFC Rio I to identify potentially dangerous troublemakers.

I've been out of the MMA loop in recent months. Just found out the other day that Cain lost his title.

Sonnen vs Silva 2 in Brazil (If Sonnen gets past Munoz) ?

He is the most entertaining man in any sport today. If you were a Journo you'd love him for the soundbites.

Any predictions for the UFC140 card?

Jones vs Machida - I think 2/3 rd TKO
*** vs Mir - TKO in the 2nd
Lil *** vs Ortiz UD
Hominick vs. Korean Zombie UD(hope I'm wrong would love to see Jung take this, has fight of the night all over it)
Patrick vs. Ebersole - 2rd Sub

Yeah Brock v Overreem should be good. I can't help but wonder if at 34, Brock is going to have sufficient cardio keep fighting at the top level. He may have to drop some weight for that.

Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung
Claude Patrick vs. Brian Ebersole
Tito Ortiz vs. Antônio Rogério Nogueira
Frank Mir vs. Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira
Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida

Great card but I'm working...

Anyway
Mark Hominick vs. Chan Sung Jung
Claude Patrick vs. Brian Ebersole
Tito Ortiz vs. Antônio Rogério Nogueira
Frank Mir vs. Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira
Jon Jones vs. Lyoto Machida

Jones v Machida should be great.

I know it's too early, but Brandao vs Aldo should be tasty. The armbar against Dennis after being hit so hard was very impressive. We knew he was a ferocious striker, but he clearly has a solid chin and great ground game to go with that. It helps when you're around quality fighters at Greg Jackson's gym.

Jones will either demolish Lyoto in less than a round, or else Lyoto will shock everyone by doing what he did to Rashad. Depends which Lyoto shows up.

Lyoto got spanked by Shogun twice who in turn was bitch-slapped by Jones. Jones is now an even better fighter. It doesn't look good for the Karate Kid, but I hope the fight at least goes past the second round.

Said it before and ill keep saying it: MMA math just doesn't work. Get two dudes in the cage and let their styles work it out. I'm getting hyped for Machida tonight, I think he has a good chance to rock Jones, and he is lethal when he smells blood.

True, but Jones does seem like an intelligent game-planner and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he followed Shogun's lead and exploited his reach advantage by kicking the shit out of Machida's legs. Of course he's so unpredictable and uber-confident he might decide to either trade punches or shoot for takedowns straight away. For me Machida's best chance is if he can use his superb takedown defence to stuff a takedown and catch Jones when he's still in close, or to counter Jones if he gets sloppy when throwing something unorthodox like a spinning back fist.

That was insane!!!!

I could never imagine Nogueira getting his arm pulled off by a semi-conscious opponent :P

Great night so far. Lyoto has the slight upper hand, tagged Jones a few times. Jones needs to relax, hes letting Machida take control of the tempo.

oh . my god. the way he just slumped down, ppl started screaming, some thought he was dead. holy fecking shit. jones is a BEAST

For those who missed it, Korean Zombie vs Mark Hominick.

Thought Machida look pretty good. It's a pitty that Silva and GSP fight in different weight classes to Jones, because really, they're the top 3 fighters in the world.

The Mir fight was disturbing. I thought Frank was KO but they kept the fight going.

Brilliant event last night.

The arm break was sick but really was an exciting exchange. Mir might fancy himself for a title shot after one more win.

Was slightly worried about Jones in the 1st round. He looked a bit worried about Machida. But was far too good in the end.

I want to see him go on and dominate for years.
