It's becoming ridiculous now, they just won't leave the kid alone.

Buys a house for his mum 'he's splashing out'.
Goes to Poundland 'he's cheap'.
Buys a new car and big house 'he's out of touch'.
Now he likes going Greggs and they report on it ffs.

 
To be fair don't expect cutting edge political analysis and hard hitting news from the Star :lol:
 
Someone on reddit compiled a list of all the terrible stories that have been run about him since he moved to City.

There are a lot and they're weird.

Someone in the Memphis thread (sorry I forget who) was talking about how uncomfortable they find it that young black footballers get unfairly tarnished with this brush of 'flash, rap-loving, car-buying, arrogant, and lazy', and it seems like that phenomenon is in action with Sterling too.
 
Yeah, I read about the house the other day. Its ridiculous. They're probably just pissed off that they can't have a go at his performances this season so are doubling down on stuff he does in his own time.

 
It's trickled into the fans too. I don't know about this season but last season clubs who had no relevance or affiliation to anything Sterling related would just boo him at matches. It's absolutely bizarre.

I wonder how much of it is to do with him leaving Liverpool under acrimonious circumstances. They certainly have an awful lot of power in the press, not just the ex players but people at the age to be in influential positions also grew up in the Liverpool glory days.
 
I don't really read any of the nonsense about him but he does appear to be heavily criticised quite often. He was the golden boy at Liverpool and the media absolutely loved him. It all turned sour when he forced his way out of Liverpool.

I think that certainly plays a part in it too, and I remember Torres getting a bit of stick for similar reasons, but I don't think it quite explains the scale of monumental shite printed about him.

Especially as last season you could criticise Sterling's on pitch contributions easily enough which became the go to backlash against his move.

Even when he was at Liverpool wasn't there stuff about him having x kids by different mothers when he only had 1 at the time?
 
The Star, Sun and Mail report on some things that are extraneous at times and this is one such example.

You're right though. He has been absolutely vilified by the press since leaving Liverpool, but before that, he was England's next big hope (another one).
 
I'm not sure why they pick on him, the UK tabloid media are parasites honestly. He's what 21? 22? Leave him alone.

Something needs to be done about reporting in media, I understand free speech but this is basically picking on people.
 
A ridiculous non-story. Honestly I wish we'd just ban links on this site to the Mail, Sun, Star etc.

We could start by banning those awful papers. They're garbage, I wouldn't even class them as media.
 
Each to their own, personally i often find myself wondering what Raheem Sterling buys, which bargain shops he frequents and what type of savoury foods he likes to eat.

So i commend the Daily Star for following him around all day and giving people this vital information.
 
Stick to the daily sport. It's always important I know what Lucy, 23 from milton keynes thinks before passing judgement on it myself.

They pick on him because it earns them money. The media, and Liverpool, made him out to be a villain when he moved to City. As long as there are enough people who dislike the guy, whether their reasoning is sound or not, there will be enough people happy to click on negative stories about him.

The funny thing about the Poundland story is that the Daily Mail inferred the pic was a recent one. It was only when the person that took it called them out for using it without his permission, that it transpired that it was taken in 2014. Cue frantic backtracking by the DM who then re-hashed the story and said the picture had been circulating for months and name-checking the person who had it taken:lol:

Anyway, these stories are so non-newsworthy that they're laughable but it feels like the gutter press are only doing it so the public can form negative opinions of Sterling. It's not just Sterling though - I remember the story about Depay turning up for United training in a Rolls Royce convertible and all the faux outrage that sparked. United player or not, I thought "Good - I hope he turns up in a more expensive car next time!"

Oh yeah, there's definitely racial undertones when they talk about him having kids with multiple baby mothers (even though that's not true), talking about his hair and his Jamaican heritage and all this. None of it is necessary and just reeks of envy and jealousy.

They've definitely made him out to be some kind of bad boy, but from what I can see he's dating a long term girlfriend, doesn't get pictured partying or falling out of night clubs, looks after his mum.

I actually quite like him outside of his choice of football clubs :lol:
 
They're so desperate for content that they're more than willing to incite ordinary folk, never mind if the likes of Sterling become subject to abuse or, potentially, worse.

What makes you think it's racism mate? Somebody said the same on twitter yesterday and then said you don't see any white players getting this sort of treatment.

But Wayne Rooney, David Beckham, Jack Grealish & probably a good number more have had similar treatment.

The media have always been the downfall of this country i've felt, & have always valued themselves on causing controversy & digging up any persons demons whilst they're on their way up the ladder.

Pre world cup and euros you see the newspapers always coming out with at least 1 public headline about one of the star players which aways baffled me. Have some class!

Well for one thing, chief, the press has form for this kind of treatment; another, in this Brexit-dominated era, hints that black or foreign players are earning big money while the rest of 'us' struggle find a ready readership.

Happens casually on this forum too, the Depay thread for example. His attitude stinks apparently because of what he wears and listens to a certain brand of music.

Yeah. I'm sure many of us had reasonable concerns over Depay's focus, but press-borne attitudes have a nasty tendency of being adopted by the public.

I don't think they're specifically targeting him because he's black.
But they're definitely using racial undertones as part of their witch hunt, and thats where it becomes racist - I mean they've concocted a story about him having multiple baby momma's, that's as stereotypical as it gets.
Plus there's a fascination with black players' hair especially when it's in a natural/dread loc'd state.
The difference between Sterling stories and stories about the others is that Sterling isn't doing anything to get this kind of attention/abuse. He may not be setting the world alight at City, but that hardly warrants this.

The stories about David Beckham are expected he's one of the biggest celebrities in the world, Wayne Rooney stories similarly - he's the England/United poster boy.
Grealish inhales laughing gas, he has nobody but himself to blame for that.
