Gaming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Emulating it in 4k is so amazing. beautiful game when the shackles of the switch are lifted.

Is anyone here playing in handheld mode? Just wondering how it's holding up and if it's a viable way of playing it.

I just play handheld when my joycons are running low on battery. Its definitely a game befitting a big screen.

So I'm up in the hot air balloon with Impa and she says "you can just use the paraglider to get down".

Erm, the what now? Guess I'll just die then

As long as it runs fine, I'm not bothered about how it looks on a small screen compared to a bigger screen. I was just wondering if it's a viable way of playing the game in terms of the controls and performance. I played BOTW on my big tv and I didn't like it. I just thought it was better in handheld, personally.

I went to buy a gift for my niece and ended up buying this as well. Hope to get a few hours in later and tomorrow after work.

A question for those who have cleared 1 main quest temple.

How do you summon avatars? Which button? It doesnt show up under abilities

so the one I have if you have the thing enabled it will give you the option on the A button when you’re in a situation to use it. I don’t want to tell you which one in case it’s not the one you’ve done. Which one are you on?

beat the wind temple so got the avatar from there.

Ah yeah same, so when the ability is active in the key items (I think) menu when you’re gliding you’ll have a prompt to press A to use the ability

Fast travel?

My only complaint is how long it takes to get the glider. Because it's tied to the main quest you could feasibly miss it and get stuck somewhere.
They should've just nudged you a bit more to focus on that first quest. I tend to mostly focus on a few starting quests before it feels like the game opens up in terms of quests, and then I explore.

Generally speaking I do, but the way the world's created it encourages you to explore off the beaten path. I did that for a bit but was getting annoyed I couldn't glide, so I started the main quest.

IMO you should have been given the glider at the end of the Great Sky Island so you can then go exploring when you reach Hyrule, if you so wish.

Quite interesting the way towers are completed here. You’d only have to climb them in BOTW and all obstacles would be within that, here quite a few of them seem to require you to complete a small quest / puzzle before you can activate them.

It also seems that the amount of side quests has grown considerably but a lot of them require just basic menial work.

I got stuck on a shrine for ages before realising I would need the glider. It’s the only slight gripe I’ve had so far though.

Genuine question from someone who’s just re-invested in a Switch (had one a couple of years ago but sold it and have just invested in a NS Lite).

I played the last Zelda game and the Hyrule Warriors one and was underwhelmed.

I grew up on Link To The Past and Ocarina Of Time.

It seems weird but even though it seems to be really popular, I’m just not sure I’ll like it!

Anyone from a similar generation that can put my mind at rest and persuade me to buy it?!

My biggest problem in games like this is there’s so much choice that I always forget there’s certain things I can do. I just spent ages trying to climb to a chest before remembering I have ascend and can just go through the floor of the platform. I also just seem to be resorting to arrows because I get absolutely swamped by multiple enemies in combat and can’t think quick enough for something clever

You've just made me remember ascend. I keep forgetting about that.

I took out a cave and unlocked a chest, but it was a platform above me and I couldn't climb up. My immediate thought was to MacGayver a ladder so I left the cave looking for supplies and ended up wandering about half way across the map.

Now I need to find that cave again and teleport through the platform.

I spent a half hour building a car just assuming if I got it going then i would somehow be able to steer it despite no steering wheels being available.

Nope.

I love this game.

It is possible to steer them is all I will say.

I find Ascend somewhat hard to use. You have to be a certain distance from the place you want to get to, not too far, and need to be sure there’s room for you to come out on top, so quite often I am just not able to use it when I want to. It’s fine when I’m just strolling around unthreatened but becomes quite tough when I have random monsters chasing me.

This on your Mac?

Yeah it's essentially the same engine, though there is more going on, but it might be ok. Not sure the current state of the emulated version though, so you might as well do BOTW first anyway.
Yup.

No of course I’m playing the first one now. I’ll probably try TOTK after some months but on the same system. Hopefully it will run fine then.

Yeah they'll work on it, should be ok for you.

With BOTW don't disable weapon degradation entirely, maybe just tone it down a little. Also, turn the hud off completely or forever be known as a noob.

Not sure it's your kind of game overall, but the best advice I can give is to mess around with the mechanics and try to break the game by doing crazy stuff to kill enemies/cheat the temples. If it clicks you'll get so much more fun out of it as it's not really a game that has a strong path, it's more about the imagination you bring to it.

Also, cooking is actually fun for once in games. Go nuts

Yeah, I've climbed to the top of one and found nothing to do there. Puzzled by that and what I need to do to start filling in the map.

You don’t need to climb them this time. Just go inside.

Oh man. So glad it remembers your horses from the last game.

Slight lump in the throat when I realised that one was named after a now dead pet.

Sticking a ruby on a stick creates a brilliant staff like weapon. Running around shooting fireballs at people and it doesn’t seem to run out that quick.

Nice tip. Shit I think I sold all mine.

I love the shrines but some of them seem willfully obtuse. Had one tonight with a pressure pad hidden under some flames and another that involved me constructing some kind of cricket bat that I'd have had no clue with unless I looked it up.
