Gaming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Spent most of the day just going from tower to tower. Now that I’m done with most of them I will probably spend all of tomorrow fusing random items and doing side quests. Might progress the story later in the week but probably nah, just wander about.

There's so much stuff I want to talk about but I'm wary of spoiling the discovery for others.

The sheer scale and open-endedness of this is staggering.

I'll just say, don't expect all the shrines to be big stone monoliths

I have so many new games that I bought recently to play on my Switch but at this point I do not envision a point in time where I decide to stop playing this. The world is so vast.

I swear it won't stop fecking raining in my game.

Should I play BOTW first or just steam straight into this ? Normally I'm a few years behind the times when it comes to games, so if this was PlayStation I would just get the older game that everyone raves about for peanuts, but Switch games don't really come down in price so could go straight to this if it's the better game/doesn't matter if I've played the last one.

BOTW is still an amazing game and definitely worth getting.

It's sold like 20m copies so surely you can get it second hand a bit cheaper anyway.

I definitely wouldn't play this before BOTW because it's an improvement in basically every way.

I didn't think of 2nd hand tbf... bit daft i know.

I would only play one of these games (don't have a lot of time to play) so would probably get this if it's better in every way.

It's a Nintendo game, it costs the same now that it cost 6 years ago.

The roller coaster shrine is so much fun. I feel like they've made shrines better in that there seem to be many ways to complete most of them, they are more forgiving than the ones in BOTW while encouraging creativity at the same time.

I need to get back to work though, seriously.

I’m in the same boat. This for £50 or second hand BOTW for £40. Feel like it’s a no brainer?

 that's why I said second hand.
Yeah even those second hand games are barely 30 PLN cheaper than brand new here. They hold value incredibly...

...which makes it even more annoying that I lost a box with 12 cartridges during my travel last year, which included BOTW, Super Mario Trilogy remake (which they don't make anymore), Kirby, Pokemon Arceus and Luigi's Mansion 3. Probably about 2000 PLN down the drain. :( I only kept Mario Odyssey as it was in my console. I've been rebuilding my collection ever since, buying some of the bigger titles digital too so I don't lose them.

Yeah I think definitely just go straight for this over BoTW. The games are huge as well. You'd be burnt out if you went from that straight into this one as they're obviously very similar.

I don't think so.

BoTW is a masterpiece in its own right, but Tears has improved on it immeasurably.

BoTW deserves to be played, but if you did them in reverse I feel BoTW wouldn't get the love it deserves.

Yeah I'd have to agree. BOTW was such a groundbreaking game and nothing has come close to the way the world works since that it deserves a play.

Though if it's a money issue, then obviously go Tears for the extra £10.

That's what I've been thinking about everybody rushing to finish BotW before this. Fair play if they don't get burnt out.

I don't know why people would even rush. It's not like there's a timeframe to play Tears. Enjoy BOTW, then play something else and then come back to Tears.

Honestly, I just don't get people who rush through games in a weekend just to say they've beaten it.

If you're rushing to finish a game that came out in 2017 you've only yourselves to blame I'm afraid.

I'm so close to completing BOTW again. Refusing to buy this until I do, however the very positive reviews here are making the wait very difficult!

I have to say I’m enjoying this much more than BOTW, aside from the fact it’s a much more complete version I went into BOTW hoping for a more traditional experience and was a bit disappointed.

this time I knew what I was getting into and have been playing it more to it’s strengths and it’s great

No it wouldn't but then if you never bought it 6 years ago why are you jumping to buy it now because the sequel is out? It's not like the you need to for story purposes either. And it's barely dropped in price either. Sailed ship springs to mind.

That question would be better posed to the posters with fomo over Tears.

BoTW absolutely deserves to be played, you won't be able to convince me otherwise, ship analogies or not.

:smirk: The train has left the station a long time ago.

No but seriously I think the people with fomo over this are probably watching the vids of everyone doing crazy shit with the new powers which they won't be able to do in BoTW. Don't get me wrong BoTW is a great game, one of the best even but if you didn't play it 6 years ago I don't really see why the sequel coming out should have changed anything for you.

There's still plenty of madness to be done in BoTW. But imagine going back to that when you've gotten used to having Ultra Hand.

Anyone looking at this game enviously owes it to themselves to play BoTW first. Even with a break between the two Tears isn't going anywhere. But going back to BoTW after Tears really will do a huge disservice to the original.

Obviously it's still early but I feel we will be talking about this being the best game ever made for a long, long time.

Yeah they'll work on it, should be ok for you.

With BOTW don't disable weapon degradation entirely, maybe just tone it down a little. Also, turn the hud off completely or forever be known as a noob.

Not sure it's your kind of game overall, but the best advice I can give is to mess around with the mechanics and try to break the game by doing crazy stuff to kill enemies/cheat the temples. If it clicks you'll get so much more fun out of it as it's not really a game that has a strong path, it's more about the imagination you bring to it.

Also, cooking is actually fun for once in games. Go nuts
Already cooked a bunch of random shit. Only done two temples so far which were just basic stuff to give me a rune. I didn’t mess with weapon degradation. So far I’m liking the mechanic of losing / gaining stuff.

It should ideally be my type of game considering I usually do like something atypical and immersive. But at the same time a sense of purpose makes it feel all the more important. Tbh I’m just glad I can play it. I wasn’t getting a framerate higher than 15 until I changed one setting and now it’s consistently 30 (although let’s see in the more populated sections et).

Rushing to finish a game is silly either way. Especially a long open world one. But I’ve played a lot of games late and absolutely loved them with the experience not losing steam due to the time lag - but then again I am behind the curve in general (always running 3 or so years behind). Depends on the person (if they need the best graphics - like my brother) or the game (if it relies heavily on visuals etc).

Obviously it's still early but I feel we will be talking about this being one of the best games ever made for a long, long time.
Fixed. There’s no single best game ever. It’s always very subjective as with all the creative mediums.

My Dad bought it on release day and I played a bit of this with him then. It's excellent. I still haven't completed BOTW (it came out just as my first son was born and I never really picked it up once I got more free time, until last week) so am going to finish that one and get TOTK for my birthday in July.

Quick question - Given that apparently a big section involves playing underground and having to put lots of seeds down to light the way, doesn't this get really dull? Also, as this game is thematically darker, does it feel a bit gloomy to play after awhile or is there enough change of scenery and light bits?

BOTW already had the most complete gaming world ever created. This has raised the bar by such huge margins it's ridiculous.

This is a game heavily reliant on your ability to use your imagination. There's no real structure to it, which is both it's biggest strength and also it's biggest weakness imo.

And yes the cooking/status effects matter so much more in this game than anything else released anytime since. But you don't even have to use it, that's why this is a true sandbox game.

There’s only one best game ever, Cyberpunk 2077.

Fixed.

Mate give it up. Cyberpunk will never be classed at the top, even after all these years and patches it's mediocre at best

To be honest, after playing it for a while, the fact that they can do this on such mediocre hardware kinda puts everything other AAA released in the last five years to shame. I can only imagine what they'd have been capable of with a PS5 or Series X.

I really expected absolutely everyone to copy breath of the wild when it was released. Its funny to see how little progress theres been from every other open world game and how little they've changed in the mean time.

It’s absolutely wonderful. But that subjective throne isn’t Cyberpunk’s.

Well, Elden Ring is similar in the sense that they created this world that rewards exploration and just lets you do what you want. No busy work, or map clutter (hello The Witcher) just a pure sense of exploration. I burned out on BOTW, but it was a pleasure to explore that world with no hand-holding. It can be frustrating at times, but you need to meet the game halfway.

Also, I'm not sure if games should copy BOTW and Tears. It works for these games, but not sure if it's a design philosophy that other games should/could aim for.

I dont expect them to copy everything. Just seemed weird that it had so little impact.
