Gaming The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The way I've seen it explained is weapons won't be as rare this time, and there will be more of them so you'll have more ways to experiment with different combinations to see what works and what you like. You won't be preserving them, you'll go through them and replace them with ease
This seems in line with what I have experienced so far, also the ability to attach items to your weapon and make them more powerful means it’s reasonably easy to grab something decent at any given time.

I don't mind the weapon fuse thing, not a huge fan but it's alright. Main criticism would be I just hate how they look, hate running around with boulders on top of everything

This game is incredible. Love the abilities. First tower thing that I unlocked, ended up doing a 3 hour detour after it basically just going from island to island, built a rocket ship that burnt as it got me to my destination by putting a hot air balloon on a plank, and then putting 2 rockets either side of it to shot me up faster.. Just so much fun. Can already tell it's gonna be one of my all time favourite games.

People are just much more creative than I am I guess  Useful video. Didn't think of making moving platforms with recall or traps with recall

Started well then.

 This made me laugh way more than it should. I just knew you were gonna drop it down the canyon but when you did, still lolled anyway :D

As for my thoughts of the game. It's better than I expected it to be and I already expected it be brilliant. Ironically I wasn't overly excited about the sandbox crafting aspect but actually seeing it in motion (and how easy and intuitive it is) I absolutely love it. I think if anything the weapon fusing is more finicky than anything else and will take me a while to get used to it. But the vehicle crafting effortlessly simple to do and brilliant.

I used to be a games reviewer. Ocarina of Time is the highest score I ever awarded, already think this is getting close to that level of perfection. Happy Days!

I don't think people can ever fully appreciate the level of craft to create this world. The physics system alone is well beyond anything else and will remain that way for a long time (well until the next Zelda) and it's absolutely remarkable that with the level of calculations/collisions going on, it even runs on the Switch at all

Like BOTW before, it makes an absolute mockery of these far lesser games that release in a mess.

That video is so good. Off to go and build some traps and play with the Recall skill.

It blows my mind how much more full and expansive than BOTW it feels. BOTW already felt massive and you would never get that feeling that you’d seen it all, even after weeks of playing it but this one seems to be on a completely different level to that. Even the base map is so packed and when you consider all the additional areas, I think I could play this for years and still not visit all of them.

Also while in BOTW you could travel for 30 minutes and not encounter anything other than nature, this seems to be full of settlements, monsters and concealed curiosities.

I am not even going to try to progress story (which seems to be far more coherent and interesting than previous one, must say the intro really got me) for another week as I just want to indulge in this world and discover as much as I can.

I haven’t had this feeling with a game for a long while. With most modern game these days, when I get them I want to progress them quickly to know the story, find out what’s on the way and that eventually changes into wanting to finish the game soon so I can move on to others. BOTW wasn’t that as once you got entangled into that world you never wanted to leave it, and TOTK makes BOTW look like a demo.

Should I buy and play this game or play BOTW first? I have BOTW and it's been on my to do list for a while.

If you already have it, then I'd say yeah you should play it for sure. It's a phenomenal game in its own right. And I can't imagine playing it AFTER playing Tears of the Kingdom. Just know that Tears of the Kingdom is better but you'll have the added bonus of if you love BOTW you've got the sequel to jump into.

This and I’ll add that there is no issue playing TOTK straight after BOTW. I only finished BOTW two weeks ago after picking it up again (I did have many hours clocked before but did not finish the story, just roamed around a lot prior to that) and I feel no fatigue at all. If anything it makes it even more interesting to see how things unraveled since the end of BOTW.

Why is Jump mapped to X. I can't sprint and jump without contorting my hand.

Controls are annoying but not different to BotW I guess. Just takes some getting use to.

I keep pressing the fecking right trigger to lock on.

You can change the controls.

They arent custom though. You can only switch jump and sprint so its still either X and B which still means we have to contort our hand.

I just press the B button with the knuckle of my thumb and then the top of my thumb is always hovering over X, I’ve always played games like this but works for me. I guess it is weird to get used to when sprint is often mapped to L3 these days

Either you're not playing with a joycon or I have fat thumbs. Possibly both.

You can change the controls.

Ah, you can? Missed that, though I didnt search thoroughly for it.

Always feels like this fecks the joystick long term.

I’ll admit it’s a bit harder with the joycons but I’m just nimble after all these years.

Plus you have fat thumbs.

Definitely does, my PS4 controllers sticks were fecked from playing so much COD

Whoever said this isnt botw 2 is very mistaken. I was one of those who thought botw was overrated so its not a bonus. No doubt they have evolved a bit from the sequel, but if i want to play a physics game i would play portal 1 and 2 or hope for a 3rd. I really prefer the traditional formula for Zelda games.

Look, I'm gonna need someone to talk me out of getting a Switch and this game. I have two young kids, one aged 3 and the other 8 months, and a full time job. Already quite set on buying an Xbox i September to spend countless hours playing Starfield. I fail to envision how consecutively indulging in two time-intensive games coincides with my role as a spouse and a parent of two.

Okay Starfield will be a shite buggy mess, the Xbox is slowly dying a death and has poor exclusives.

Would be harder to convince if you were talking about PS5.

To be honest with a child myself the Switch is much better as a pick up and play console.

It means switching those 2 buttons makes no difference to issue the poster is having.

How do you know that?

You don't like the game so why do you even care? Or can we expect weeks of your expert analysis of you didn't want a physics simulator?

I didnt say i dont like game, i just thought botw was overrated and was hoping this wasnt too much of the same. Thinking a game is overrrated doesnt mean you think its bad. It just means while botw got 10's I thought it was a 8/10.

Luckily I have the nose of Mister Burns and just press the x button with that.

Did you like skyward sword? Was the weakest Zelda game for me. Part of me wonders if they simply had to make a big change from traditional to freshen it up and that the original quality is more the nostalgia.

This one is so interconnected with the world, the verticality is dark souls 1 levels, there's so much to do everywhere and you can just roam around and get lost for hours just getting distracted. The building aspect is just unreal as well, but I can appreciate not everyone would care for it. I think I'll always miss the original weapon system, where it felt a huge deal getting the bow or hookshot and it unlocking new things around the world, but i don't think it's possible in any way here, so the weapon system with durability is pretty much the only way to do it IMO. Hoping they have some quality dungeons and memorable dungeon bosses, have no doubt about the latter given the enemy variety so far that I've come across. And the story is excellent IMO.

I just got the Ultra Hand. I'm sold, this will be awesome. Surely I will not lose interest in this one now. I hope.

No i thought skyward sword was weak. I thought twllight princess was excellent though but i am not fan of robots and futuristic stuff getting into what is usually a medieval fantasy setting. But that's just my subjective preference. And i dont like shrines replacing traditional dungeons though i expect the few traditional dungeons in this to be better than in botw. Anyway im only 10-12 hours in, so its just first impressions.

I feel/hope the next logical step for them in terms of bringing back the old formula will be to entirely remake OoT or Majora’s Mask for the next system.

Fair enough! I loved twilight princess too. Also loved Wind Waker. Not sure how the replayability would be on those (or ocarina and Majora's) if they refreshed graphics and some physics. Wind Waker I feel would be tedious and empty and that they'd have to make it like these 2.

They won’t. They’ve nailed the open world, sales are through the roof and reviewers love it. There is no reason for them to go back to previous formula.

I dont know since botw and this got perfect scores, sales and user reviews, i think this will be the new formula for a long time which is fine because im just in the minority that in terms of enjoyment botw was more an 8 rather than a 10, but if the majority feels these are the best games ever they arent going shift back to the old formula.

They remade links awakening between botw and this! Can see them doing it to one of the games as there's like 5-6 years between big Zelda releases.

I made a giant wooden bridge to cross to a very far island, but it was too short and fell into the abyss. So sad :(

Reimaging really rather than remake i think. I dunno. MM what be an awesome. Dont think its going to be happen though.
