Gaming The Legend of Zelda | Earthquake: "It's actually ridiculously good, and keeps getting better." ★★★★★

It's quite challenging isn't it?

I learned earlier not to venture off into far away lands

Don't say that! OoT is my favourite game of all time! This is going to make me buy this

It's not beat for beat like OoT but it really has the same sense of adventure that the game had back in its day. Just with a modern influence and moments of interactive genius that Nintendo are famous for. The game doesn't treat people like idiots either.

Some of the talk of music in here has got me listening to some old Zelda music. In particular I always found Saria's Song to be very sad despite its upbeat tune.

It's a song of friendship and bonding, friends of Saria's identify themselves to each other with that song on their travels. However Saria has to watch her best friend, who she even possibly loves, leave on a great adventure whilst she stays at home. Then becoming a sage having to leave behind her home and take on that responsibility.

It always cut me up a little bit, her story is a bit sad I always thought.

Plus the whole thing between Saria and Link is just horrible, especially when you chat with Mido as an adult and he tells you she was waiting.

The song just reminds me of all that, it was sad man. They didn't even need to use too many words to tell the story either.

Yeah that's a huge thing considering the likes of Skyward Sword and recent Mario titles are very easy. This actually just tells you to get on with it and presents a challenge. That's perhaps the most impressive thing about it.

Has anybody bought this for the Wii U yet?

Looks more than worthwhile on the Wii U.

I played it on Wii U today and that video is pretty much right. Switch looks sharper and holds frame rates better, but there's not a whole lot of difference.

Btw I'm not sure what version we are in right now, but I'm not getting the drops to 20 in that area myself, I guess they've patched it.

I still get them every so often. Its gotten fairly predictable when they're going to show up.
If you've been in an area for a while it'll settle and run pretty smooth
but if you've just powered it on 5 mins ago and wander into an area with a fair view of the horizon, some random physics based ... stuff and a lighting element like a fire and it will nose dive pretty much every time.

It hasn't ruined my enjoyment but the frame rate is distinctly ropy in parts.

If you didn't like OOT then there is something wrong with you.
Maybe it was the insane hype.

I'm not a monster, the game is good. But people go way over the top describing it. I was hearing ridiculous statements for years before I played it myself.
And this new game, the things that I've read this last few days, like - "it's maybe the best video game ever created" - and that from apparently professional game journalists. Man, I don't know.

Is it really? Really?

To be fair if you didn't play OoT when it was released a lot of what made it so special at the time is understandably lost. When I replay it now I still think it's one of the best games I've ever played but that will be boosted by the memories it brings back.

No, its very enjoyable and will probably be one of the best games released this year.
Thats pretty much it.

It's working, the hype. I do want to play it.

Good point.
Personally though, I liked Wind Waker a lot more, it's maybe my favourite zelda game along with the snes one.

Wind Waker is fantastic and gets way too much stick I think. Or at least it got too much stick, I think it's more appreciated these days. There's a really good quote in it too that I've annoying forgotten now.

Played it around 15 months ago (for the first time) and I think that it is one of the greatest games ever. Incredible fun, with very nice mechanics and things to do.

To he fair, something has to be though right? It'd like saying nothing can ever be great again, we've already been past the pinnacle. Rebelling against it because of reviews without playing it really isn't a good indicator because for all you know this could be the greatest game ever made. I'm not saying it is, I'll wait to pass judgement, but something's got ot be right?

As for OOT, as someone said, imagine that game in the 90's and you may understand why most call it the best. It's also held up remarkably well. Even something like the Witcher 3 won't be thought of in the same way 20+ years from now.

Played about 10 hours today. Absolutely loving it so far. Done about 7 shrines and spent a good bit of time just exploring. The shrines are a nice little addition - mini dungeons, each with their own puzzle type. Can't wait to get to the first full dungeon! It seems to be a lot tougher than previous Zelda games too. Pretty much no hand holding which I like - and even the little camps can be tough if you just run in without thinking swinging your sword.

Only think I'm not really liking so far is the weapon durability. It's nice that there's a choice of weapons, but it gets a bit old having to constantly switch when they break. Only a minor thing.

People forget it also was the invention of how to do 3rd person combat. Like Mario64 completely showing how to do 3D platformers (and arguably still being the best of it's genre), OOT is the same for it's genre.

Apparantly these days it's not good to be original and actually fundamentaly change genres, it's even less good to look back on great games and like them :(

Mario 64 is definitely still the king for me. Replaying it on a 3ds rather than having to use that N64 controller makes you realise how good that game was. It's aged really well.

On loading it does, just like every open world game ever. As the review rightly says it's to do with loading chunks and memory management, it's something unavoidable currently on games of this type. It's hard to predict every single viewpoint for level designers, which is why we get that, in a more traditional fixed level they can be designed for very specific views.

But it doesn't suddenly do the old school thing of dropping just because of what's going on at any one moment because of the screen being filled. That's what affects gameplay most.

Yep. And all things considering, it has aged in a terrific way.

Really, '97 and '98 might be the most influential years in the history of gaming. Final Fantasy VII changed RPG forever and made it a mainstream genre, like you said Zelda changed 3rd person combat and Mario 64 the platformers, GoldenEye and Half Life changed shooters and then Fallout/Fallout 2 actually showing that Westerners can make nice RPGs.

Not to mention the release of Playstation (and Nintendo 64).

The only time the framerates every got close to "ropey" was when I was docked, and running through tall grass, in a forest, during a rain storm, and it was like 3 seconds and only happened the once. I actually expected worse.

I've 30 shrines cleared now, one of which was a proper dungeonish one, and I still haven't opened up half the map. I don't know about bet game ever but this is exceptional. Current impression is that it's the best Zelda I've played, best open world game and best ARPG(if you include it as that, are Zelda rpgs is a massive debate of it's own). I literally cannot remember the last time I've enjoyed a game this much.

I've heard that it runs at a steady 30fps when in handheld mode(Although as you said the dips aren't suppose to be that bad).

Still glad the game is good, at the moment I'm desperately trying to find some old fluff to flog on ebay so I can buy the dam thing.

It's been consistently perfect for me in handheld mode, which is how I played it all day today with the football on in the background.

Meh, its still dieing an hour after you start playing, fairly routinely on Wii U
Maybe playing pc for so long has spoiled me or that it can look so nice at times that its just more disappointing when it gets choppy.
Its passable but its definitely not a strong suit of the game

Ahhh, you are playing Wii-U?

That makes sense because of the memory set up on that.

I've just decided one of my new life side-goals is to complete every Zelda game there is.
