Gaming The Legend of Zelda | Earthquake: "It's actually ridiculously good, and keeps getting better." ★★★★★

Said in the other thread, being used to the PS4 controller so much has led to me mixing up the buttons

Press x to open glider, falls to death

Anyone else having a hard time dodging? I triggered those slow mo attacks a couple of times but most of the time I just jump and get hit. All the jump button does is have you actually jump instead of a dodge. I can see some attacks coming from a mile away but the best I can do is jump backwards or run away.

And yeah this has sucked me in now. So much shit to do. 2 hours just flew by.

Spent first two hours of the game playing with no clothes as I didn't see the chests at beginning until I accidentally fast travelled there

Think they leave the teaching for the
shrines. I've watched someone deal with 5 or 6 of them and in a couple of them were basic tutorials about dodging etc.

Yeah, that's the impression I've gotten from playing it. So far it's making it just that bit more special, I'm loving the difficulty too.

As a vet of the Souls series, I wouldn't say it's hard, but more like them where you just learn what to do and what not to do in different circumstances. I prefer that to say, the Witcher leveling system, as it makes you actually feel like you are improving rather than just your character.

Have you tried locking on? But yeah, it's about timing rather than invincibility moves, I'll agree it's different at the start down to that!

 You also get traveler trousers very quickly if you look around too.

Wii games, Uncharted 2 and GTAIV?

No deus ex/witcher 3?

Is the combat intricate or rather simple? And is the music of a high standard ?

Yeah that is a good assessment.

Size of the map is incredible too. Watched someone play it for 5+ hours on and off, and though they covered a large part of the map to reach the first dungeon, there was still so much left unexplored. And the ground they did cover, there were lots of different things to do. A highlight was seeing a cute dog roll over and eat some meat Link dropped. Very basic but the little things are great.

Yeah. Still haven't gotten the hang of it.

For the first question, the answer is both. The actual combat can be simple, but it's really not once you realise just how different the enemies are and what you can and have to do to win. Wildly swinging your sword won't help and you have to learn to dodge each and every enemy, at least so far. Plus you can use the environment, projectiles and all sorts.

All I've done is the first mini-dungeon and it all seems so overwhelming. The best thing is it seems there's something around every corner too, it's a map rammed with content. The little things really do matter, like I figured out to cook an apple from the start (not that it's even that easy, we aren't talking Skyrim levels of stupid simplicity here), but when I figured out how to cook a bunch (still without 100% success, you'll get why when you play it), it was like the most amazing feat I've achieved in a game in a while, as stupid as that sounds

Yeah. Still haven't gotten the hang of it.

You will mate! I get the feeling we aren't supposed to master this game from the off.

Oh and I forgot the second question.

The music so far has been pretty cool actually. What's really interesting is that the music gently playing in the main world so far for me has been soft and understated. I wondered why, until I picked up a bokoblin skeleton arm and it the rattling it makes when you have one equipped and are carrying around with you. It seems audio cues play highly here.

Again, it's those little things.

The worst thing is I used up all my free food from the archer link amiibo to get to the shrine on the mountain, but I did find it funny pausing it and seeing link shiver in just his undies on the inventory screen

I've just figured out proper cooking. It makes the stuff in the likes of Skyrim and Witcher look even more simplistic!

But yeah, the way the inventory screen changes to show what you are doing to him is amusing :)

The cooking is brilliant, more involved than you'd expect from a game like this, but still easy and quick.

Animation of the food bouncing around the pan is a treat too.

I've never played a Zelda game in my life, so where would you guys recommend starting? Do I go back a few generations or dive straight in with this on the Wii U?

The story in Zelda games was never the main point about them anyway so jumping straight in will not hurt. I have only played Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and briefly Wind Waker and the last 3DS one but never fully completed any of them and hardly remember a thing about their plot.

@Sarni went from probably not getting it, to getting it in 4 months to getting it tomorrow

That's willpower
 Yeah that's me. Three days ago I thought it was ridiculous idea to get a 1-game console for a full price.

Cooking? I figured you could do it but whenever I go near a fire it just says sit

Isn't the plot the same in all of them? Rescue Princess Zelda from Ganon(dorf)?

I really want to play this but I simply can't convice myself to buy a Switch for this. I might consider getting a Wii U and playing it on that, with a much larger library of great games as an added bonus. Is the Wii U worth it? I've owned a Wii years ago but I haven't got it anymore, so it would make sense.

Then you are doing it wrong

That goes to show the strength of Nintendo games. Some gamers care about graphics, some story, some music, but the Nintendo in us cares about mechanics and a nice mixture of the rest. Apart from story, who gives a feck about that? Read a book you freak.

If you are going to buy a Wii-U, just save and buy a Switch. The Wii-U really was just a tech demo of the Switch, and the console/games isn't that much cheaper. The only thing that would make Wii-U worth it is if you still had those Wii ganmes.

 well exactly. Which makes it all the more odd that someone can say they don't remember the plot in any of them. You're preaching to the converted here you gimp.

Argh.. Been so long since I played any of my consoles and I have since ditched the TV in my room for another monitor. So I have a 1080p monitor with no HDMI port, and a 1440p monitor which does but the game looks blurry with jagged edges all over the place :(

It's not terrible, but wish I just had a TV to play it on now.

Well that's the thing, there are a lot of games I missed on the Wii that I'd still like to play, but so far it seems like there will be no backwards compatibility on the Switch. With just a single game I want to play on the Switch, that doesn't look like a good investment. Now if they'd provide some sort of backwards compatibility, that's a different story.

In the week I spent with a wii u, I would say no

Some good games though

Still early in, with about 11 shrines done, and a bit of the story along with endless roaming about doing feck all, and I'm getting hooked on this. Think it is indeed better than Ocarina Of Time and Majoras Mask.

It's also the plot of every Mario game with a few name changes.

How very dare you!

Please don't dismiss the Mario Galaxy games as 'wii games', they are top tier platformers. Galaxy 2 is arguably the best 3D mario game, Mario World 3 being the best 2D.

The point is that the best reviewed games aren't always the best games. A great Mario game will always get incredible scores as will a good GTA game. A great Deus Ex or Witcher won't.

Na Mario games always get good reviews because they're truly great games. The ones on the list are masterpieces.

I think a good way of filtering Metacritic lists is comparing the critics score with the user score. Won't always be accurate, but will help you pick out overrated games when there's a big difference between the critics score and the user score. The only games that look out of place on that list are the two GTAs. And it's no surprise they both have the lowest user review scores on the list.

Witcher 3 has incredible scores!

It's average is 93 + on metacritic, no?

Hmm I'm not sure Deus Ex (unless we're talking about the original) is as deserving though.

GTA IV is massively inflated though.
