I think Neil Druckmann is too good a writer to go for that old cliché. That said, Joel dying at some point during the game wouldn't surprise me, it's hard to see how he fits into a story with Ellie taking on the bad guys on her own. I trust Naughty Dog to handle it well though.
Seems inevitable that Joel will be killed off, agree that it needs to happen on screen. Invested time in Joel, we should get to see him go out on a high saving someone's ass, kicking some infecteds head in!There is the interpretation of that trailer, that Joel is actually dead, and Ellie is just imaging him. There was a big theory about it.
Of course that from the new trailer, he will be alive at the beginning, but after that who knows. It will actually be cool if he dies (next transition for Ellie), but it must not happen off-screen.
That guy is also a figment of Ellie's subconscious to convince herself Joel is still alive, hmm the dancing girl also acknowledges him so I assume she's an imaginary ghost too...as was the fella she was dancing with previously.. the whole room is full of imagined ghosts basically, and Ellie is alone, which is impressive in it's own right as that setup must have take some time to put up by herself, I'm sure once she finished putting all that lighting up she took a moment to admire her work & said "you know what Ellie, we really are the Last of Us". She's also schizophrenic.
My interpretation of that scene was Joel is dead, she's killing for revenge and just pictured him there. There's a ghostly feel about him and his face hasn't been shown in any trailerWhy would that be more than likely? He's clearly alive during the "happier days" scene, judging by the "your old man" comment. Assuming that all or most of those people are killed at the start, turning Ellie into her hateful murdering mode, that means the very first trailer we saw is set after that. Joel is alive in that trailer and asks Ellie what she's going to do, with her answering something along the lines of "I'm going to kill every last one of them". So he must've survived whatever happened at that community.
That is what I think too.My interpretation of that scene was Joel is dead, she's killing for revenge and just pictured him there. There's a ghostly feel about him and his face hasn't been shown in any trailer
Humans were the main enemies for most of the first game.So Ellie is the only playable character in this? That's disappointing. Joel is one of my favourite characters in gaming. It also sounds like the clickers are going to be replaced by evil humans as the main enemies. I might skip this.
Sure, if you ignore all of the clickers.Humans were the main enemies for most of the first game.
Pretty sure that you deal more with humans than with the clickers and other zombies in the first game. In most of the levels, main enemies are humans, and the final level deals only with humans. When you're playing as Ellie, you're dealing mostly with humans, etc etc.Sure, if you ignore all of the clickers.
The entire game is based on a disaster which has come about because of a virus which produces clickers. Sure, there are evil humans in there but again, they are a by product of the virus / clickers. I can barely recall being killed by a human in the first game. I died quite a few times to stalkers, clickers and bloaters.Pretty sure that you deal more with humans than with the clickers and other zombies in the first game. For sure you will have clickers here too. And well, with clickers being blind and other zombies not that strong, humans with weapons give more challenge.

From what I've seen of the second one (and I haven't watched the entirety of the E3 game play footage), it just seems to be humans. Not my bag, man. Hopefully I'm wrong.
The first game had numerous human confrontations like what was shown in Part II's E3 trailer. I'd argue the majority of combat was like that. It balanced it out with tense zombie sequences like when you're exploring the university. There's no reason to suspect this game will be any different, we've seen about 10 minutes of gameplay so far so that's not a lot to go on.The entire game is based on a disaster which has come about because of a virus which produces clickers. I like how you pointed that out as if it wasn't immediately obvious to anyone who watched the trailer. If you play the newest trailer in reverse, you can actually hear Ringo Starr saying "Joel is dead. Miss him"
Seriously though, there's a scene in the E3 gameplay footage/trailer where a guy talks about Ellie's "old man" - and the person he's describing sounds very much like Joel. I do think Joel dies, but I think it's early in the game, rather than between games.
Edit: Oh, people have already mentioned that. Serves me right for only reading the last couple of posts.

You may be right, but it's a bit of jump to conclusion. The entire game is based on a disaster which has come about because of a virus which produces clickers. The old trope; "Humans are the real monsters."You may be right, but it's a bit of jump to conclusion.
It looks as though were living in a small community getting by, but obviously as it's a flashback something went wrong. They could have been overrun by infected? Or a new gang?
But as people have already said, majority of the first game was about survival against other people (Joels kid is shot by a soldier, They get hunted and Tess gets killed by soldiers, Joel gets injured fighting off bandits, the cannibals, hospital etc.). The infected are a more a side part.
The old trope; "Humans are the real monsters."
My guess is her girlfriend gets killed/taken by some cult. She goes looking for revenge/for her but Joel refuses to let her go alone so he goes with her but he's an old man now and is killed pretty early on in the game leaving Ellie to go it alone. Game ends horrible and bleakly with her dead or mentally broken.
Dunno, TLOU doesn't lend itself to "happily ever after." either.I'm not sure they'd do that to Ellie to be honest. They wouldn't treat here that way imo

The character has been murdering and killing since she's been a child so she can't be totally right in the head!
Don't get me wrong, I don't want her to die! But I think they'll go for the emotional gut-punch.Oh, it's not going to be happily ever after. I didn't mean it like that really. In terms of the mental impact on her, they've kind of acknowledged that in the first game. Obviously she grew up in this world, so she's almost become immune to it in that sense.
I just really don't think they would end the series by treating her like that. Could be wrong, but i would be surprised.

Are people thinking that gameplay is scripted then? If the under the car stuff is natural then that's amazing.
I know its unlikely but i genuinely wouldn't be surprised to see the game released this year. Could easily see it being released with 4 weeks notice from ND. The hype is already there.

Another video here for those interested in the real nerdy shit in the demo:
Some incredible detail. Makes you wonder just how much further graphics and detail can go in games.
Most impressive thing they managed though is to make a videogame kiss look kinda normal and not weird like every other game.
