The Guardian - Manchester United to sack Erik ten Hag after the FA Cup Final

I wonder when Stone/Orny/Whitwell will publish the sacking? Surely the articles are complete, i'd assume?

Right on the final whistle so the post-game press conference is just a shitshow? Or they going to allow ETH to leave, go on holiday and he just never comes back?

Speculating that ETH will leave the club within the next year is not exactly ground-breaking journalism. I think about 80% of us expect that to happen.

Nothing wrong with speculative articles either, but why then release it the day before the cup final? That is what is biting me. You can speculate anytime after and we would all agree.

A) Why are you writing 'within the next year'? It's not what the article is saying, as that really wouldn't be worthwhile. They are saying after the final.

B) For whatever reason you've decided it's 'speculative'. It may be simply a fact - they have a source that told them that this is going to happen. That is not speculative. And it is worth reporting.

C) They probably released it now because they got the information now. If they wait, someone else may get it before they do, or we sack ETH right after the final and their information becomes useless.

D) If we win the cup and then they release it, people would then also find fault with them and say they that are trying to ruin our celebrations.

The bottom line is that the media is not here to service us and our needs. They are also not hellbent on making things hard for us. They are just doing their job here.

Bit drastic. Think they’ll just terminate his contract not his life.

Honestly, we don't know exactly what the effect of the news leaking will be. We are heavily expected to lose anyway, maybe with it being ETH's last game we will actually show something different. Maybe he will go for it with some different tactics, who knows.

Then they haven't conducted the search for a new manager very good, have they? It's their responsibility to ensure stuff like this doesn't come out. It hurt us as a club and make us look like idiots. If this was Liverpool or City we would mock them and call them amateurs.

Once we started talking to other managers and agents - and we had to, especially with Chelsea also checking out the same people - that information was just not in our control any more. It's unfortunatel, but it's the way it goes.

If we waited before talking to anyone, managed ot keep it quiet and thenlost out on the manager we want because of it, people would (rightly) still complain.

True. The club gains nothing by leaking this a day before an important cup final.

My assumption is still that this Guardian journalist has taken a calculated guess because we have been forced to sound out a couple of managers after Chelsea sacked Pochettino. The club had little option given that there is a limited pool of managers to choose from and both Chelsea and us are likely to go for the same options. In addition, Milan also sacked Pioili and Juventus are still looking for a manager.

If he is going then far more than 1 two people will know in the club and outside e.g. new coaches manager and staff. Contract with any new manager will have involved lawyers on both sides who all have staff. ETH and his manager, friends, family etc may also know. Players may know. Lots of potential for a leak.

To those who believe everything is a 'leak' or a 'brief' from within the club.

How would you have approached multiple in demand managers this week without it being known you were potentially in the market?

Or would you not have approached any and let them go elsewhere?

Instead go for whoever is left over after Chelsea, Brighton etc get their first choice, out of 'respect' to the failing Ten Hag?

You are quite right. Once we started talking to people, we no longer had control over the information and I'm sure it was leaked because of agents and not us.

However, every report on our interest in others managers also mentioned that it would only happen IF we sack ETH, because the club was clearly - and correctly - remaining tight lipped about it. They would not tell anyone that we are sacking the manager.

So the question is - why is the Guardian different? If its report not speculative, then the reporter would have had to get the information from someone at the club.

The club does stand to gain from a leak. It notifies the growing list of candidates that the job is available and we will be looking.

If you’ve ever been headhunted, typically the interest is gauged first (especially within your industry) with the hiring company withheld. Sometimes there is an NDA involved.

The club leaked this on purpose I believe. This is to lay down a marker for all the candidates.

I doubt that's the case with football managers and players. Once you get agents involved, things leak.

I doubt it. I'm pretty sure that any manager we're interested in - we'd contact him or his agent directly rather than hope that they wait and not sign for anybody else just because the Guardian claimed ETH will be sacked.

We already know, based on reports, we've met with McKenna's representatives.

it’s the last time ten hag will be man united manager at 06:30 bst.

It's baffling that people think that INEOS leaked this. Goldbridge had even given the nod to a conspiracy theory that they leaked it because they wanted to distract ETH from his job as him winning the FA cup would make it difficult to sack him. That's crazy considering that we're desperate for a trophy and European football.

In my opinion the only people benefit out of this mess is the ETH's camp. Irrespective of today's results they will leave the club with their head held high cause the argument had shifted away from the game/their performance on to this mess. One should really have a look at the agency that represent ETH and who also employ his son as an analyst.

This is speculative journalism - just because our intermediaries may have had a contact with managers intermediaries or agents regarding their position is just standard business.

I am sure a formal end of season review is planned and that would be part of the process.

What’s to say that ETH hasn’t decided to stand down after the final?

I don’t believe that anyone at the club actually within the decision making Ineos squad would be leaking anything to journo’s - it’s just a journalist assumption based on discussions having taken place between intermediaries and using that to create a story.

It was merely a comment in the chat he read out.

you might be right but the timing of these leaks are iffy. In my opinion the only people benefiting out of it are those whose absolutely scared of a thrashing today and want to divert the blame to something else

he was like oh its interesting, very interesting, I never thought it like that.Comeon!

Why is Goldbridge is so pro ETH? I've seen religious fanatics in my life and they are obsessed by their religion in the same way Goldie is obsessed with ETH. Who arranged his interview with Hojlund? Do you know that ETH and Hojlund share the same agency?

Timing is awful, imo. Should've happened sooner. It's a shame though. I did like him, but he never managed to put an everlasting footprint on the game. Not the baldie we needed.

I think the timing is perfect for a manager who had a horrible season and look set to get a proper thrashing in Wembley

He said ETH deserves the sack, but laments the quality of touted replacements. If we could get a top coach great, but I don’t see what Poch or McKenna will do better with those players.

So the next manager will freshen things up a bit until it at falls apart again…rinse and repeat.
I suppose we might as well give up then. What do people expect the club to do? Keep paying failing managers and renewing their contracts just cos?

He never said that he deserves the sack quite the contrary. He blames everything on injuries, players and he keeps challenging those who are ETH out to find a better replacement.

From my part I was quite neutral up until this information got leaked at the eve of an FA cup. Its quite evident who benefits out of this leak. Its neither the club nor INEOS

I can see eth fc are throwing their toyes out the pram, don't worry you could always follow him to his next club.

He clearly is not the answer so why persist and yet he seems to have created a c-u-l-t that see no faults with him

Its obviously not the club that have leaked this...it'll most likely be someone at / connected to Chelsea out of spite.

It can't be helped though really. EtH needs to go and we need to move quickly. We can't be sat around being all noble if the decision has already been made - what do we gain from that?

I'm sure EtH will be fine. I wish the bloke all the best but he's not been good enough, he can't have any complaints

We are not a charity? You could have fooled me given the wages we have shovelling out to sub par players for the last 10 years.
I'm not convinced by ETH but the club were when they hired him.Have they backed him? Have the players done their bit? Has he been hamstrung by injuries?
We simply cannot continue sacking managers even couple of seasons.
His treatment this week has been appalling.

Why can’t failed managers be sacked? Managers at other big clubs don’t last long if they fail to deliver results and trophies.

Regarding the injury crisis, LVG also had to deal with those yet the results under him were never this bad.

As for club backing, it’s his own fault for blowing away millions on players who are not up to standard. He’s definitely not “not backed”.

Lets not forget his nice payoff. Many people wouldn’t mind some “appalling” treatment for a highly paid job that pays out even after a deserved sacking.

Walks out a hero if we win, walks out a victim if we lose.

Being shit in social cues myself had thought me to take a back seat and analyze situations. Now let's ask ourselves who are the ones benefiting out of this leak and who is not.

a- the club? Certainly not. They need that European spot and wouldn't want any distractions.
b- the players? Certainly not.. This will probably lead to a huge investigation which would be probably followed by a witch hunt. It will also enrage fans at Wembley which means more pressure on the players to perform and more hostility towards them if they don't. There's also zero motivation from INEOS to spill this information to the players. At least not yet.

The only person who benefits out of this is ETH. Irrespective of what happens today he'll walk out with his head held high because all the blame had been shifted elsewhere. There's even leaks of him turning Bayern away because he wanted to focus on Manchester United. This guy surely deserve a statue.

I bet the report has added a few million to the viewing figures, or is that too cynical?

That’s some take considering the story came from a journalist connected with Chelsea but hey let’s shift the blame for everything on ETH.

The first person who spilled the beans was Gianluca Di Marzio. The rest came later on. Di Marzio is horrible in the UK but is huge in Italy. SEG has many clients in Italy
