The First Redcafe Sheep Draft

I'll be hoping to play something like this, if I can get my picks together.

It was kinda obvious. Brehme was tempting though, was very close to go for him with Lizarazu and Lahm banned, but I was worried that someone else would go for him and Sammer is clearly the standout pick for my team, couldn't risk missing out on him.

That's what worried me.

Why Nedved is hard to fit? I always thought of him as pretty versatile and easy to fit to most teams, he's tactical awareness is brilliant, always tracked back and had tremendous work rate, brilliant on the left wing but could also play right wing without any issues..
What makes him difficult? What am I missing? And don't you think him and Laudrup will cope brilliantly together?

It's not that he is hard to fit, rather the opposite. With versatile players people tend to have a notion of where they prefer them and argue/vote against them deployed where they don't prefer them. One of those weird things with "draft psychology".

Gullit seemed to have a similar issue for Aldo before. It is quite common with those who have great workrate, mention workrate and people stop looking at what actually made them exceptional. Bizarre, I know.

Indeed, a lot of times I've seen Gullit as number 10 being mentioned mostly about how he will be taking part in the midfield battle and all, while that is great people hardly mention how he was an absolutely phenomenal and complete attacking midfielder. A punishing one, at that.

Just throwing it out there, but can we return to group stage format for the next draft? I know it means a lot more threads and possible reduced interest/voters as a result, but it's a bit shit when you spend time building a side and only get to 'play' one match.
feck that. Last time I ended up having to play Anto twice. Sure it aged me by about 10 years.
Eh? You didn't want a striker last time out.

I've said before, I'm vetoing Heskey all the way to the end. Laughing stock or not, he actually had redeeming attributes, loads of them.
He'd be one way to squeeze in loads of self-indulgent virtuosi in attacking midfield.

@AldoPaine18 He's the type of player who I'd like driving the ball up forward. With the CF that I am looking for (look at the first message I sent you in our conversation when I got the round 1 rules all wrong) they are two players who can absolutely bully a defence with their ability in the air, with their footwork, or with just pure brute strength. And with Giggs on the left wing, it would certainly be a dream team worth watching.

can we have a full list of picked and ineligible players?

I think he's brilliant, especially when you have a central number 10 or playmaker dictating matters (think Rivaldo and Nedved were my first two picks in the CL draft). Laudrup will dictate, but does like to roam as well. But generally it's a decent fit with a bit of care.

He was in my plans to begin with. But I foresaw some possible "out of position" issues with him. He's a great favourite of mine, though - thrilled that he'll feature here.

I thought you were going to go for him after your Albertini pick in the first round! Some nice teams taking shape so far, with Pippa looking like an early favourite.

Aye - I can see why you'd think that. But my team may not end up as Milan'esque as it could appear. I have a soft spot for Italian players - it could be more a case of that than a case of me going for an outright variation on a Milan theme. We'll see what happens after a few more rounds.

Anything early to mid 1990s with a Serie A tint is a winner in my book! Alot of my favourites from that era have gone already but there's so much depth from that period.

Indeed! It's a gold mine, really - and I suspect I'll be doing more digging.

I feel so stupid, only just realised someone was ineligible... I had him in the 50s draft FFS!

Any team that has no sheep will have an obvious win over any that has a sheep :(

Two for the "close but no cigar" category: Belanov (b. Sept. 25th, 1960) and Careca (b. Oct. 5th, 1960).

Don't think so, and remember they could always be subs if you don't get too many. The big arse really is that you are delaying getting the "right" players until later, when they are likely gone. That's what hurts. I look at my targets and know for a fact I can't pull off such a string of hits, let alone not knowing the questions!

OK, made my mind up. Balu, I hope you are not going for the same right winger. Don't think so as he ain't German. ;)

I'm not doing a German theme actually, it's a Bundesliga theme . So far it just happened that all 3 picks were German. Lizarazu really was the prefered leftback choice :(.

Why? You see Brehme as a Serie A chap?

I didn't plan to go for Brehme early (which was always necessary to get him), and I really like Lizarazu, that's why I was so angry when he was banned :(. I don't plan to pick a right winger though. If I go for a system with wingers, Müller most likely will play there. Not 100% sure yet what I do, but it makes no sense to pick a player for that position with Müller already in the team.

Very interested in this criteria. Without any research or heavy thinking at all, not many spring to mind for me. I'm convinced that 2 or 3 of the ones I'm thinking of will be taken up in this round.

Yeah, I reckon a bunch of folk will still be scrapping for picks come round 3 here.
