FF7 is an awesome game, it really transferred to 3D well (reminds me of M64 in that regard). The graphics and art were amazing, the sound is excellent and the scope was properly mind blowing.

However, three drawbacks stop it coming close to 6:

1) Far too linear.
2) Far too boring between places (ridiculous amount of enemy pop-ups too)
3) The last boss was fecking wank. No one-on-one with Sephiroth???

To be honest it wasn't that difficult once you had got your tactics right. The less materia you had the less damage Air Ton Stamp (Or Stomp?) did. So I simply had a mastered Phoenix with a Mastared Final Attack on each character and a Master Materia (Green) on 2 characters, equipped with Quadra Magic.

Then it was just a case of using Demi 3 all the time. Each one took of 9,999 damage. So times by 4 gives you roughly 40,000 damage, times 3 is 120,000. Then when it stopped taking 9,999 it was simply a case of pumelling it with limit breaks.

Ruby was more difficult IMO.

I also thought the translation was extremely poor at times, made understanding a difficult storyline that much harder. Agree about the last boss aswell.

Still, it was the first RPG I ever played, and I've been an FF fan ever since!

Which places did you find boring by the way?

I think it was a combination of the linear aspect and the random fights. I know they appear in all good rpgs, I just remember being more aggravated by the ones in FF7.

Have you played some of Square's earlier RPGs? Secret of Mana? Chronotrigger? Also capcom's Breath of fire series and Nintendo's Earthbound are superb.

Did you know Square and Nintendo co-produced Super Mario RPG and it sits amongst the others as being one of the best games of that era?

You should play all of these, they are proper examples of how great the RPG genre has been. Luckily for all of us though, the FF series is still amazing.

1) The FMV will be compressed.
2) The FMV will be realtime.

Yes, many things can be done. The simplest of course is to get the FMV down to 720p, maybe even SD (lots of people say they can't see much of a diference between upscaled DVD and Blu-ray in any case) and then start mucking about with its bitrate. Audio down from uncompressed 7.1 to compressed 5.1. Even editing (cutting) parts out.

Then there is the realtime route, which MGS4 used for the most part, but it still came in at 30GB on the disc - single language. 30GB would be 5 XB360 DVDs even without considering data replication, so 6 or 7 in reality. If they fill the whole 50GB, then that would be 8 XB360 DVDs without necessary data replication, so maybe 10 in reality. What if it's that big that the PS3 version comes on 2 BDs?

Yes, they will IMO need to gimp (read "change") it for XB360 in some form or other.

Fair enough.

Never. I keep telling myself to download some ROMS and some emulators but I never get round to actually doing it.

I just don't think anything will beat FFVII for me, it was the first RPG I ever played and I loved every second of it. I will try and give myself some time to give it a go though.

See, Weaste explains it much better than me. Anything more than 5 DVD's for a game would be ridicolous. Would it be like previous FF's were once you have changed the disc you don't need to change them again for the rest of the game? Or would it be that you need to change them depending which area you are in?

I think this is where Sony are vindicated in their decision to stand by Blu Ray.

I actually hope FFVII gets re-made so much, as i didn't play it back in the day, and i actually have it on my PC right now but i can't get into it ebcause of the piss poor graphics.

I played VIII and X, and a bit of XII. X is one of my favourite games of all time, i thought the story was epic, i can't remember much of VIII but remember liking it, and XII was decent but i was busy when i first got it and never got round to continuing with it.

Never played any of the older ones, although i did play Mystic Quest, that was part of the FF series was it not? That was an amazing game actually.

I'm not sure how to break this to you, but this statement makes you a failed human being.

I'm truly sorry. :(

And Redlambs, i can see what you're saying about FF7, but personally i found the battles enjoyable and pretty much every boss to be a fantastic amount of fun.

It is fairly linear up until you get to the highwind, arguably the buggy but this doesn't even bother me when you consider the storyline. Where as 6's storyline was good, FF7's shits all over it.

Do you actually have this game or is me posting these videos making me more of a cnut than you think I already am?

No new info, but some pics of all three XIII games...

Doesn't look CG to me, but it's difficult to tell due to the size of the images.

Seriously, you don't know hard it is to play a game like that when you've never played it before. It actually gives me a headache looking at it. The worst thing is, i can easily go back and play 2D games and enjoy them, but almost anything on the PS1 i just can't play anymore, and i assume it's the same for the N64.

FFVII and FFX were both better than VIII in my opinion. VIII's major downfall was its junctioning system, you could become ridicolously strong very early on in the game, which made the game too easy.

Still a very good game though.

I actually meant VII. Typo.

Hmm, i've tried going back to a few PS1 games before and failed miserably, including the Syphon Filter series.
But FF is simply FF. FF6 is graphically the worst game i've played this year, yet it is definitely one of the best.

Started FF5 today, and this is looking brilliant so far! :D

Awww, i must go on that tonight. I've only just realised how long you spend in Midgar at the start! :D

Out of interest, did you ever trigger the alarm in Junon on disc 1 in the hallway where you can either go straight across as you're supposed to, or turn left where you go the underwater reactor?

It's a great chance to fight enemies that are literally of a far higher standard.

Just after you save Priscilla?

No, I didn't even know you could! I'll try that when I get there, cheers!

Yeah usually I spend about 4-5 hours in Midgar before I get out, then you spend about another 45 minutes listening to that story.

Could you ever beat Midgar Zolom on the first go? I managed to do it once but haven't been able too since.

Still, I can make it across without a chocobo:D

How the flying feck did you manage that?

As for the Midgar Zolom, I can only do it after levelling up a few times on the other side of the mountain. This is so i can live through Beta when it casts it, then cast it back at it.

Something I always did was to stick around in sector 6 (?) for a bit just before the park and fight those purple tailed things when under fury so i could get some of the better limit breaks faster. It's surprising how quick this happens. I ended up with finishing touch on that playthough by somewhere like Junon. :D

You just have to wait until it goes to the far left corner, while aligning yourself with the grass thats closest to you at the other end. Took me a few goes but once you do it it's easy.

Yeah I do that too, I always preferred Meteorain over Finishing Touch myself. Omnislash beats them all though:D

Also, did you ever figure out a use for the 1/35th Soldier items? Or are they the most pointless items in any game ever?

Yeh i've still got it. :D

I was stupid enough to spend a reasonable amount of time looking to see if that Weapon was still there on the ocean floor once you got the submarine.

Think it was called the Saphire Weapon in the Japanese version.

Oh aye, Meteorain is just one step down from Omnislash, really.

And no, i don't even think there's a point to most of those items from the speed arena. I seem to remember if you managed to get above 5000 points you'd get the Parasol for Aeris which is actually better than the one you get in the Temple of The Ancients, which is a bit pointless really considering you don't have her for much longer!

You can get Sephiroth's masamune sword and tissues amongst other useless things in the Gold Saucer. The amount of hours i spent breeding chocobos there was staggering and it was so much fun when you had no idea what to do and relied on the Sage to tell you what to do. :D

I thought it was Sapphire Weapon for all the versions.

Still, the Weapons are amazing enemies. Ultima, Diamond, Emerald and Ruby, all the battles were awesome, particularly the latter 2, so much satisfaction when you beat them both.

Aye, Ruby was the hardest of the lot in my opinon closely followed by Emerald.
Ultima was always good fun to chase down, but what happens if you let Diamond get to Midgar? I seem to remember him just standing there ready to attack it but i'm not too sure.

I cheated with the breeding of Chocobo's, my brother had a walkthrough guide so I used that (Just for the Chocobo breeding, not for the whole game)! Still, I've done it so many times now it's more or less memorised!

Tissues I recall made battles a bit tougher (Hence the description of it in the item screen). But yeah most of them were useless.

Temple of the Ancients, another great setting in the game. That boss at the end was the most frustrating in the game for me (Aside from Emerald and Ruby), but still, I like a challenge:D

Everything about this game is genius to be honest, I want a re-make:(

I never let it get to Midgar, waiting for it to get to land took an age!

Yeah Ruby was very difficult, took me ages to figure out how to beat it.

Still, was worth the wait:D

I remember feck all from VII, which is a shame (and a bit strange). I seem to remember I was quite decent at it.

I use to repeatedly drive into Diamond to hurry the thing up.

Aye. On my first playthrough i wasn't quite as knowledgable and actually cast Hades on it when i was in times of desperation.
Lo and behold, the thing was paralysed and i had a large amount of dazers in my inventory, too!

The second time i played it, i realised that by killing 2 of your characters before battle, it would sink it's hands into the ground right at the start.

I never knew that in regards to tissues. How so?
And if you're talking about Demon's Gate then fecking hell that was a bastard. I had to train up for hours where you beat the Red Dragon to get past that thing first time round. :D

Yup, took me ages to figure that out, yet now it seems so simple! I forgot how I beat it, not played the game for so long!

Apparantly the more you have in your inventory the tougher battles in the Battle Arena become, whether it's true or not I'm not sure. Still, I got everything from there in the end!

Demon's Gate, that's the one! It didn't help that I never used Aeris so she was a pretty shit character. Seal Evil helped me a lot though.

Red Dragon was piss easy, and you got one of the best Summons in the game after it, the 3 Bahamuts were Legendary:drool:

Something heavily disturbing has happened.
I'm enjoying the start of FF5 significantly more than FF6, despite 6 being brilliant.

I can't believe i've left this game this late!

I've never played anything before 7 (Except Tactics).

On the subject of 7, I've just infiltrated Shinra's Headquarters. This game never gets old.

Redlambs you have connections with Sony, tell them to use their 20% stake in SE to good effect and have this re-made.

Well 10% should be enough.

I don't know what is stopping them re-making it to be honest, they'd make millions of it and they know it.

Surprised I haven't posted in this thread before given I'm a total FF nut.

Finally got my PSP fixed (bloody screen broke) and started going through Crisis Core, now that I'm quite a few hours in and the likes of Cloud & Aeris have been introduced I'm totally loving it. Theres not much to the battle system or plot overall really, but I'm such a fan of the FF7 world and characters its awesome to see them again (FF7 = Greatest game ever, fact). I think after I've finished CC I'll want to play through 7 all over again.

I was wondering whether your name, Ixion, meant anything other than the Aeon on FFX. :D

If FF6(3) showed up on the PSN I would buy a ps3 instantly, dying to play that.

TGS is going to be interesting, cause then they will probably show off FF13 and possibly versus.

Why haven't i seen this thread before, probably need to look in the entertainment bit for a start.

Big ff nut, played all bar the one that jus came out on ds (3 i think).

7 was the one that brought me into the series so always holds fond memories but i'm not blind to its faults.

Personally 6 is my favourite. Plots against empires, a madman drunk on power, the world gettin destroyed, the story gripped me from the minute i picked it up.

9 was dissapointing at the time i first played it, but grew on me more and more until it's now right up there with the ff6's of this world in my opinion.

I'm going to pick up FF1, FF2 and Crisis Core at the end of the month for PSP. I'm replaying FF7 at the moment, the game is just genius. The story is stunning; the Cetra, Sephiroth, Cloud, Aeris, Avalanche, Shinra, Mako, it is easily one of the best storylines ever wrote.

 I was thinking the same.

Dark Ixion was one of the tougher Aeons on FFX I thought. Did you ever get a chance to fight Pennance?

I'll be both surprised and disappointed if we don't see anything on both FF's at TGS. The demo is coming in March so I'm assuming there will be a gaemplay trailer at the very least.

One day I am going to have to download VI and give it a go. Hopefully it will get re-made for the PSP. I know there have been a couple of re-makes of VI already, which is the best, I'm guessing the original?

Yeh, it was a right cnut. The first time i played the game i just used Zanmato. Second time round i started using clear spheres and replacing empty spheres with strength nodes, agility nodes, etc which could all be got from the species monsters that dropped them at the monster arena. Levelling up wasn't a problem as I created a weapon that literally generated thousands of AP.

Triple Overdrive
Overdrive > AP
Triple AP

After spending ages, and literally battling One-Eye about 100 times, i got that weapon on three characters and went up against the new and improved tonberry in the monster arena. Seeing as though that did stupid amounts of damage, i started levelling with ease, even though I ended up with very few basic spheres left and had to get collecting them again!

Penance wasn't too bad after all that.

Bloody hell, must have taken you hours! I remember at the battle arena certain enemies gave you strength and defense spheres so I managed to get my 3 main characters upto 255 on each of those by defeating loads of the enemies. I defeated all of the Aeons aside from Anima, Yojimbo and the Magus Sisters before I stopped playing the game (I must have racked up about 130 hours of gameplay).

I also managed to get every enemy at the Battle Arena except one. In the cave were you got Yojimbo you had to get 10 Tonberries. I must have spent at least 12-15 hours in that cave and throughout all that time I only ever fought ONE. I changed my equipment, my party, I tried everything but the little bastard just would not appear, so that pissed me off no end. I like to think of myself as a perfectionist!

The Omega Ruins was my favourite place for levelling up though. The enemies were varied and fun to fight against. I also loved the fight against Ultima Weapon. (In fact I've never not enjoyed a fight against a Weapon(Omega in VIII is probably my favourite behind the 2 in VII)).

Which three characters did you use in X? Tidus, Wakka and Auron were my three. Attack Reels was an amazing limit break. (Blitzball was a ballache though, was fun for an hour or so but then became a bit tedious I thought).
