The modern look to everything worries me about Versus, the skyscrapers, suits, cars etc.

Eh?

That doesn't make any sense!

Its a bit like the GTA4 effect in that it seems a bit too realistic, which kind of killed the fun. It doesnt seem to have that 'fantasy' feel to it, but it does look quite good though.

So I gave XIII another go in the first weekend in months I've actually properly had the TV to myself and ... I actually like it now. When I first played it I'd actually gone through most of the crappy linear shit already. I only had about 3-4 hours of it left this time, and it was pretty good because I'd finally unlocked the entire battle system. Now I'm out in the open world I'm enjoying it a lot and liking the battle system and such much more. I may actually go and finish the thing now.

I still think that along with X-2 it's been the weakest one I've played, and I've played and finished all from IV onwards, cept that stupid fecking MMO.

That looks brilliant, but so did XIII and I've never felt more let down by a game than I did with that.

X was the last great FF game, and that was a decade ago.

Well, you have to have a little faith here. The team developing this is composed of a lot of the members of the team that did FFVII and FFVIII before moving onto Kingdom Hearts in their current roles. Same writer for example, Nojima - FFVII, FFVIII, FFX, KH, KH2, FF versus XIII.

Final Fantasy XII was the last FF game I played. I didn't find it as bad as the reviews given. The graphics for a PS2 engine were very impressive actually and the gameplay is something you have to grow into.

You can pick it up for next to nothing in game shops nowadays. I saw GAME flogging it away for £3 in the pre-owned section.

I'm done and dusted with FF, the FFXIII was the nail in the coffin, they all worry about candy eye graphic they forgot the very basic : GAMEPLAY

We still enjoy playing VII, VIII, IX, and X because of the story and gameplay. XI and XII can't comment on them , havent played them properly, Online was shit

Why can't they give us materia to play with, or secrets like the KOTR materia in VII, instead of the cool graphic but gimped story line and gameplay like in the XIII, the reason I bought PS3 Was the XIII and my oh my how disappointed I am with that dross, you're limited to about everything, linear plot, linear enemy, 1 button mashing

Wait, there's an open world in that pile of shit?

I actually really enjoyed XII, I can understand why it wouldn't be to everyones tastes, but it's probably the least linear FF I've played since the PS days. The battle system takes a while to get going but certainly not nearly as much as XIII. Very enjoyable game.

Eventually, Chapter 11 onwards after 25ish hours of gaming.

I bet it won't be massive, seeing the graphics, they can't afford to have a world like VII build like that, at least not yet.

Spoil me Cina, does it worth the 25ish hours?

Dunno mate, I've only played a few hours of it so far and I haven't tried to progress the story at all. There's little missions you can do to run around killing bosses to get items and stuff so I've just been doing that and I've found it pretty good fun. You also get access to every battle class for every character so it makes the leveling system a lot better and there's a lot more freedom there too.

I actually enjoyed the last 4 or 5 hours of the linear play too, not sure why, not a lot changes but the battle system is much better and it's not just a case of pressing attack, attack, attack constantly.

I personally don't really think the games main downfall is it's linearity anyway. I remember back to FFX which didn't have a world map and was very linear in itself up until you got the airship. I think the main problem with this is the lack of towns, it's just constant running through enemies. One of my favorite aspects of FF has always been reaching a town after battling your way through woods and dungeons and stuff and then getting to do little sidequests for people and go to all the shops and stuff like that. With FFXIII it's literally just 20 hours constant of running through enemies, and the only place you shop is at save points.

The actual fun is the liberty of upgrading your character, weapons, and leveling GF, Materia, or watever the system of the series, it's where we spend hours and hours long after we kill the last boss with ease.

Linearity is fine as long as we're presented with a chance to customise our character, in FFXIII it seems that we're square pegged to create the character as they would like it, there's literally no room for experiment.

Not to mention the mini game, the blitzball is a whole new game by itself, Gold Saucer was good at its time, and Card game while boring is a feature.

It seems that they're too busy developing the graphics they forgot the very basic.

All indications point to versus being a FFVII type of game with a KH battle system.

If it's online i'll have to skip that, MMORPG takes a different approach i don't hink any of the FF team are capable of. Finding the balance and stuff, continual development, i'd trust blizzard more when it comes to that, and even they fecked up after a while.

If it's offline... sigh... good or bad we're bound to buy it

Not that many people and neither should you. Its a continuation of XI with better graphics. Still has the same problems with a terrible UI and boring gameplay. I was hoping that they'd learn from the last MMO and look to improve it. Instead they did exactly the same thing but with newer graphics. So unless you were 100% content with XI...

I wish they just go back to PS2 engine and really create the best and longest epic stories of offline RPG minus all the cool graphics, it really gets boring after awhile, looks nice for a start though.

Funny thing is, I like tactics, the story is also dark and gloomy where death is just death and nothing glorius like a slowmotion falling aeris

This might be of interest to you "people."

Square Enix has announced that it's to release the first two Final Fantasy games on the PlayStation Network.

Presumeably they're the PSP versions of the game, I already have those so wouldn't buy in that case but they're very good. I love playing through FF1 PSP every so often, very nice looking game.

I played through both on the GBA, i didn't realise they'd made PSP versions. 2 would still annoy me with it's levelling system.

I'm guessing you could buy them off the PSN but only play them on the PSP?

Aside from the obvious ones I always loved this track

Did they release I and II on the PSN by the way?

Can't beat the Safer Sephiroth song for me

and also amazing from VIII:

FF music is so fecking good that it should have its own thread as something aside from Final Fantasy, in general. I am not ashamed to admit that I have am still listening to these daily, even after all this time!

From 7, I'm struggling to put my finger on one in particular that stands out from the rest, though I'd probably go for the Prelude if I was forced to pick just one. It's the best version of the Final Fantasy prelude in the whole series:

There are too many to list when you think about it. Cid's theme, Jenova's, On That Day Five Years Ago....shit, that's before looking at the classics!

Nobuo Uematsu...brilliant, brilliant musician. So gifted.

FF7 cannot be topped. The greatest game of all time. Problem is this I feel has hung over the series since 7 and from 8 they've moved progressively away from what made FF7 Great - memorable characters, a real bad-ass antagonist, and a sweet fecking red Lion.

I finish my exams tomorrow and I was going to start up Lost Odyssey again. However, having just listened to a few of those pieces, I think I owe it to Final Fantasy VII. Must be 4/5 years since I last had a play through.

And yeah, KingEric, there is no shame in listening to great music from a video game, especially not from a genius such as Nobuo Uematsu. There is such a stigma attached to listening to video game music but feck it. We love it!

I'm playing seven right now, Airbuster just came out after the shinra president chatted some shit. e19.98 well spent on this and ff8.

I've been replaying it on my PSP, got to Rocket Town yesterday and Palmer wanted some lard in his tea. And talking about music, i've got this piece coming up soon.

I have the original FF7 soundtrack on my iPod. Simply because the battle theme and 'boss fight' and 'still more fighting' are brilliant for running.
