What's your favourite single-player FF?

I decided to give XIII another go. Like a lot of people the first time I got pretty fed up of running down corridors fighting a few monsters then watching a cut-scene. Ironically though it seems that I gave up just as the game opened up (chapter 11). I'm enjoying running around completing the missions, riding chocobos and improving my people at my own pace. These are the things FFs are supposed to be about for me and it's a shame this one was so 'linear' for so long.

Anyway I quite like the battle system etc. now so I might just go on and complete the game. It gives me something to do while I wait desperately for news on FFversusXIII!

Replaying FF8 at the minute, just got onto the third disc. Really is better than I remembered it to be (though I still don't like the junctioning system, materia was much better). This song is epic.

When I've finished 8 I want to play either 6 or 9 (Never played either), which would you guys recommend?

9 is great and the actual creators favourite (if i remember rightly), with some fantastic music and a nice simple abilities system. This is my favourite piece from it,

The piano collections version of it is brilliant.

That being said you should play 6 first, i haven't played it for a while now but it's a classic and probably the best of the lot. It's got everything you want, great music, fantastic bad guy and a ton of side characters to pick up if you look around hard enough (or check google). Also you should play the earlier ones before 9 as it has a lot of nods to the older games in it.

Developed of Final Fantasy Versus XIII is now in full swing, according to Square Enix’s Yoshinori KItase.

The developer made the comments during a fan-based Final Fantasy XIII-2 bash in Tokyo over the weekend, where he announced, “for Type-0 and Versus XIII we are giving 100% to development.”

FF Versus XIII was announced back at E3 2006 and forms part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series, which Kitase-san serves as producer on.

The PlayStation 3-exclusive RPG last popped up back in January in the shape of a fresh trailer, though Square’s already confirmed it won’t be showing its face at the Tokyo Game Show this week.

The new Duke Nukem. How long has this game been in bloody development.

Also been playing Final Fantasy XIII over the past few weeks. Can't say I enjoy the battle system too much. XII was much better.

Christ, they've compressed the hell out of the video on XB360 to get it to fit on one disc in XIII-2.

Looks like a YouTube video.

I'm a PS3 owner but to be honest I'm not seeing much difference here.

This is the problem with a lot of people. How you can't see the massive macro-blocking all over that image is beyond me. Start by looking top centre of the image, and work your way down in an orderly circular fashion. All the detail has gone on XB360 due to video compression.

They just want to save money by using only a single disc. XIII was on 3 discs for XB360 and even there the video was of a lower quality, this time they've simply compressed the shit out of it. There's only so much you can put on a DVD.

I've been playing through VI the last few days and I love it. Never played it before, just had the War of the Narshe. Great story to it aswell.

VI is amazing agreed. I want to replay it someday, but I still hold the hope that they'll remake it....so I want it fresh if that were to happen.

it won't happen

Not excited for XIII-2. First one was graphically stunning yes and at times the combat system was a lot of fun. But the characters and story were just...nothing compared to past installments.

Just remake FF7 ffs.

VI is excellent except I thought the last third was a bit of a let down, without spoiling anything it just felt like filler to me, putting stuff in your way before facing the final boss.

I'm halfway through XIII at the moment. Very nice visuals and challenging combat, although the game in general is a bit linear and the story a bit hit-and-miss at times.

Snow is rather irritating.

XIII-2 out today in the UK (and the rest of Europe I assume?)

Was a bit dissapointed in XIII and X-2 had shitty characters and plot....but I'm still sort of looking forward to it. Will play when I get home from work.

XIII was awful and I hated the demo for XIII-2.

Won't be getting it. Which is the first FF I won't have bothered picking up in a long time.

XIII was insanely generic, no fun, no real story or character development....I mean lightning was okay but completely forcing me to switch characters was annoying and the battle system seemed to lack any tactical involvement, even if you had immensely low health compared to what is suggested by others, ...which is where i got half the fun in previous games, being below the average health but tactically winning the battle, even if it did take longer than usual.

I mean X has it's fair share of hate, but battles were fun, it had Blitzball which was fun, and it Auron, who was great. I never bought XIII until it was like £10, same deal with -2, i'll give it a go.

Does it?

X is widely acknowledged as the best RPG made for the PS2. It's magnificent.

Well it's hugely hated by rpgnerds on both gamefaqs and ign. That and VIII were the two that were cool to hate before XIII.

X is quite simply one of the best games I've ever played. There were so many different plot twists in that game that completely fecked me up.

Yuna's sacrifice, Tidus' dad being Sin, Auron being an unsent, the maesters being unsent, Jecht being Yuna's father's guardian, Yevon's corruption and use of machina, Yuna fecking it all off at Zanarkand, Tidus being part of the dream...there was all sorts of shit going on in that game.

In FF13, on the other hand, there wasn't a single moment that made me step back and think, "shit, that was absolutely mental...". The characters were boring, the story miserable in comparison to earlier games, the music not all that, the combat and levelling decent at best...and what the fecking hell did they do with the rest of the game? There were about 3 sidequests (this could be wrong - I only remember 2 off the top of my head, but I'm sure there was another), and the main one was about as repetitive as it gets. For the first time in years, I won't be getting the next upcoming console FF.

I can't help but think that Square-Enix are basically just whoring themselves for all they're worth at the moment. FFX came out 11 years ago, and there hasn't been a single FF of that quality since then. Instead, there have been countless spin offs, a couple of remakes, 2 very poor FF games in XII and XIII, and also FFX-2 which, to be honest, was considerably better in my opinion than XII and XIII whilst still not being great.

I'm probably coming off as a bit of an FF mentalist now, but it's such a shame to see the series as it is at the moment given the nostaliga that so many people will get from these games. Here's to hoping that FF13-Versus will be fecking amazing.

I agree with pretty much all of this

Oh yeah, shit.

To be fair, anyone who hasn't played FFX by now deserves to have the storyline ruined for them. n00bs, innit.

Also, FFXII is amazing. If anything, that's the FF game that was critically acclaimed by reviewers but the general public didn't like it because of the open world combat. Loved it.

The problems with 12 were, that it was their first attempt to change the system dramatically by having it in real time. And also the story was terrible.

By the end of the game I really enjoyed the new system (borrowing a lot of things from mmo games) but it did take a while to get used to properly. 12 was well worth playing for that reason.

13 had nothing. No reason to play through it other than fanboyism and the hope that at some point it stopped being terrible. It didnt.

I enjoyed the demo of 13-2 a bit more but its still the same crappy and easy combat system so I'll be waiting for it to go way down in price before I gamble on it
