Just started playing this yesterday and I've already clocked up 12 hours. A bit linear but I'm enjoying it thus far. I like the battle and level up system.

Was wondering if anyone had any tips for a boss I'm on at the mo as it's the first time I've come unstuck so far.

I'm at the end of the Gapra Whitewood and I'm fighting the Aster Protoflorian. I've tried about 10 times now but I don't seem to be taking off much of this creatures massive health

Gran Pulse, isn't that the place where all the hunts take place? Some are hard, though avoidable. Chapter 13 has the hardest battles.

I'm up to chapter 11. Just started all the missions on the stoned L'cies. Had to avoid all the huge monsters and level up on all the smaller enemies which are still pretty challenging.

With this game I've found, there's a period for the first few chapters where it beds you in and it's quite tough, then it gets to around level 7-10 where you think you've got to grips with it and it becomes relatively easy. Now its tough again. I suppose it keeps you on your toes.

Thoroughly enjoyable game and the battles are interesting almost all of the time so it keeps you focussed and entertained. Not a game for newcomers I reckon, which is a surprise as I thought it would be a route this edition would be taking with the more linear format and Leona Lewis on the soundtrack

Something happened at Chapter 13 for me, I just couldn't be arsed anymore. Good up until then though.

Get the growth egg asap too, it will help a good bit. What team do you use?

Don't have my PSP at the moment but might download IX next week for it, playing through IV on the DS again currently. Anyone who has a DS but hasn't played it, buy it!

Final Fantasy IX is probably my favourite in the entire series. Criminally underrated by pretty much everyone I know or spoken to on message boards.

However, it is the highest rated Final Fantasy on Metacritic with a score of 94. Beautiful game

Don't know what the growth egg is but I'll be sure to look out for it now.

I'm mainly using Lightning, Venille and Fang in my team. If I encounter a proper hard battle I'll change Venille for Hope as he has some useful Synergist abilities

The growth egg gives you double cp per battle. You get it from the ochu style monster in one of the cie'th hunts. Number 55, the stone is in Oerba village on the roof of the school i think.

Yea, and you need the chocobo IIRC.

I've still got the discs for VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XII, XIII!

And yeah you need to have done the first 14 stones to get the chocobo.

Oh and any more news on when 14 is out? I've not really got into MMO's before but i'm going to play this one.

Anyone heard this before? I've always liked this particular track from X-2 but never heard the piano version, its really good

I love that track, memories of lightwaves, when i first put the disc in and that played i thought i was in for a treat. Shame the story of the game wasn't as good, although the battle system was really well done imho.

FFVII followed by FF 3 ( on the SNES ) were simply the best final fantasy games with some of the best story lines in an RPG ever. Immense in every aspect, music, graphics, story, playability, amazing.

FFX and X-2 were also good. Played FFX1 online which was decent until I found WoW which made me stop playing that game simply because at that stage I wasnt leaving the house days on end.

FFXII was a different touch, but didnt play it much, and now FFXIII to be honest... hasnt captivated me as such. The gameplay and new battle system are making it less final fantasy and more Zenonia-like :p

I dont know, I feel terrible having that game in my living room and only managing to clock up like an hour and a half of gameplay.

Watch Final Fantasy: Advent children if you guys are fans, wont be disappointed.

Anyone else notice that in Muses latest album, the exogenesis part 1 is essentially using FF1 from the NES music? It starts at about 1:20 into the song. It's probably been 15 years since I played FF1, but I'm certain that it is very similar.

Without doubt, the hardest Final Fantasy I've ever played! I swear I've never had this much trouble with bosses on any other edition in the series

There are a few difficult bosses, I thought that Vanille's Eidolon was the trickiest, took me the most attempts.

Your party getting healed after every fight and the ability to retry every fight made it a bit easier than it should have been though.

Yeah, you're right about that.

Thing is with some bosses, I can have my whole party on full health, then one attack and my lead character is ko'd in one. It's not as if I've avoided battles to level up either, I've fought pretty much everything on the way that I was capable beating.

Currently on the Fal'Cie boss at the end of the Taejin's Tower. Think i'm gonna have to head back down and grind some levels

It's addictive.

I find myself cringing at every cut scene as it's over blown and really cheesy although i'm at about chapter 9 and the actual story is coming together quite nicely.

It is really linear and the amount of cut scenes is rediculous. Visually it's absolutely stunning though and the battle system etc is pretty sweet.

That's pretty much the game on the head there Vulgar. Good fun when it lets you play it, very much like X-2 in that regard.

A trailer for XIV from E3,

Looks good, i think this will take up some time.

News is coming in from Famitsu/Dengeki PlayStation.

Game will be at TGS with some new announcements. There's new screenshots showing new in-game locations.

New screens show a Shinjuku-like environment, endless wilderness, a gas station. Screens are real time.

Nomura about the game's world, "If you try to go all the way to the end, it's truly far."

Nomura on Versus XIII:

- All the screenshots in the interview are captured from the game running in real time.
- The movement of the clouds in the game are controlled by the physics engine in the game.
- The game employs an open field concept, so you can travel anywhere except into mountains.
- The encounter system is a mix of random and visible encounters? (Confusing point, the blog doesn't seem clear either.)
- Battles are seamless. The only loading in the game will occur when moving between very large areas. They're aiming for the ultimate in seamlessness.
- Objects along the paths of roads can be destroyed.
- Most people will not believe their eyes when they see the high quality of the battles in motion.
- The staff are highly motivated now.
- There will still be improvements and more polish on the visuals made, the visuals in the screens are the game running at the moment.

- You'll be able to use a car as promised. You can exit it and move on foot at any time as well.
- Enemies will be visible on the field, and while some enemies are wandering around, others will suddenly appear and surprise you. (This clarifies what the random and visible comment meant, and it also confirms that game will be similar to FFXII in that sense.)
- Nomura says they're planning for a big unveiling of Versus at some point, but he doesn't really give any deadline for it.
- There will be some announcements at TGS of titles which have not been revealed at all yet.

Nomura on Agito XIII:

- The game is in the tuning phase of development.
- There is a world map in the game, and you can ride chocobos on it and fly an airship around as well.
- Agito XIII and The 3rd Birthday are going to be the greatest titles on the PSP ever.

More info as it comes in.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII going multiplatform

...according to Game Informer.

The only thing i struggle with is finding the best way to get the best weapons and accessories.

any hints/tips or ideas would be grand.

With 13? Well there is an area i've been using to grind out the money and CP.

Before the final battle go through the portal back to the city and fight your way back to the save point near the big Adamantoise. Then set up a party with Hope, Vanille and the woman with the staff who's name i forget. Set up a paradigm with the two girls in debuff mode and Hope in buff, make sure you're controlling Vanille then fight the adamantoise.

Use her summon straight away, press square as soon as you can to transform then use triangle as soon as as well. Then spam death on it and pray. Gives you loads of CP, make sure you have the growth egg, and if you're lucky it drops an item that sells for 150k or an item needed to make the best weapons. To repeat just walk back the way you came through the door, return back and there it is again. Fighting the guys helps as well because they drop incentive chips which you can sell for more money.

The best way to build up your weapons quick is to buy from the shop that sells animal parts "strange liquid" or something like that, put 25 of those on a weapon and it should give you the x3 bonus. Then buy perfect conductor from Lenora's Garage and stick as many as you like on to get to the higher level. Best to check online what the max level is for the weapon as you don't want to waste your money.

That of course is taking for granted the fact you're right near the end of the game, if you're not then you don't really need to worry about upgrading. I didn't start until the last chapter.

Cheers Xander, good helpful stuff. I'm not at the end, i'm about 28 hours in and at this moment all my characters are maxed out as far as their crysterium is concerned.

I wonder about how many levels their are for each weapon. I have some at level 11-15.

It's confusing not knowing the levels they get to. With some accessories you only level up twice and they get a star.

Also is there any point in keeping a bunch of accessories? are they worth it just to level them up and dismantle?

Do not dismantle, it's really not worth it. The stuff you get is just rubbish compared with what you can buy if you sell them instead.

The tier 1 weapons go up to about level 25 i think, then you have to use a crystal item to upgrade them, then they go up to about 60 odd and then you have to use the really rare crystal you can only get from the adamantoise and then they go to 100 and they're maxed out.

Accessory wise it's always useful to keep some about, the rare item drop ones are very useful later on. But other than that you can chuck most of them unless you're after the achievement for having had every item. Strength plus, defence plus, magic plus and auto tetra-whatever are the only ones i use.

Oh but whatever you do don't chuck the growth egg, and if you haven't got it yet and are on the open world bit go get it.

I'm on the big ship and just rescued vanille and szah i think. So i dont think i'm on the open world bit or am i?

I hope i have the growth egg or at least will get it.

Yeah i have so many items, and the only ones worth a damn are certainly the ones you talk about so i think i'll just sell the rest.

You get the growth egg from a Cie'th stone mission, if you haven't done any of those yet then you're not on the open world yet!

Check the web about the best way to get it but i'd say you still have a lot of levelling to do before you could beat the monster that holds it. Basically just follow the story for now, don't worry about the odds and ends until later on.

Once you get a free run around do the first few Cie'th stone missions because they all fall nicely next to each other, and get your chocobo then you'll need to level before taking on the bugger with the growth egg (it gives you double CP btw).

I finished it in about 40/45 i think, but i've clocked up well over that now doing side stuff, maybe another 20 hours.

You do have to finish the game before you unlock your full crystarium though, which made me speed up doing the story.

Yeah i've noticed that you it doesnt unlock as you finish the levels but it unlocks at stages int he game. It's quite cool i guess, it allows you to max thigns out before you continue to develop.

I really like the fighting system and it seems to progress and get better. The game is almost too slow in it's build up, like only after about 25 hours can i now change my party at will and have all characters available and even then i know i have many more things to come in the fight system.

Some fights take such a long time though, that's a hassle, i dont mind it for bosses but for just random enemies it can be a hassle.
