In a VII remake I'd want to keep the battle system and materia system mostly the same, although I'd make a couple of tweaks. Like I'd ditch the Throw materia and just give that ability exclusively to Yuffie, and give each character a unique command like that. Just to give each character something different apart from their limit breaks.

And other things like obviously they could have Yuffie and Vincent in the cutscenes this time! Zack could be featured more, Bahamut Sin from Advent Children could be a summon. Things like that I would be ok with.

I love the old battle system :(

If they did change it, they'd probably go down the 13 route, then you could only control one character. There's no way of doing a fluid atb where you can control several characters at a time that i know of!

I really like X's battle system, I could live with something like that in VII.

i wouldn't want a remake of VII, i just dont see how it can compare with everyones experience of the first, any game play changes would be criticised and any story changes could cause riots! Its still playable now and there's no need to change it or even polish it imo

however revisiting that universe could be awesome, i'd have no problem with a sequel/prequel or they could tell the story from another POV like letting you plays as sephiroth

They could just make slight changes to the battle system. Better interaction and such, but still keep it turn based. The old system may be outdated, but a new/fresh take on it while keeping the best parts about it could be fine. For example, and I havent played 13 yet so I'll have to use older examples, but for example in FF8 where you had to keep pressing select to boost your summon's special move or press the shoulder button as you strike with a gunblade to increase damage, in 12 where you had to charge with the R2 button and then press one of the 4 controller buttons for a corresponding quickening to chain them together. Those kinds of features that lets be honest, they've never really nailed a brilliant one that they've wanted to keep from game to game. So if they could come up with something much better than those in terms of interaction whilst still having a turn based game, that would be fine. One that they havent put in a single player FF game yet (again I havent played 13 so maybe they did?) is from FF 11 the mmo. In that game you had special moves and depending in which order you done them, a different element was achieved and a black mage had to time a longer casting spell to land right after the chain was made and if he got the right element and the timing, it did mega damage to the enemy. So something like that, or several good ones and then a turn based system would be fine.

so 24.15 hrs in and i've finally reached a point resembling something like a final fantasy game!

Gran Pulse looks great so far, though i've not gone beyond the plains as yet, and the scale and variation of the monsters roaming it is fantastic.

the game still looks magnificent. Even after this amount of time and the boredom induced by the opening areas i still continue to be blown away by its visuals, the most visually impressive game i've played bar none, i'm not even bothered by the cut scenes varying in sheen from one to the next as even the 'poorer' ones are superior to just about any other games

just hope Gran Pulse and all subsequent parts can keep my attention and deliver on its early promise

The Cieth stone missions and chocobo treasure game are the only things on Gran Pulse really. I'd recommend getting the growth egg while you're there. I missed it, went to chapter 13, and I've had to go back and get it.

In all honesty being 108 hours into the game, this has been a soulless experience and for all the pretty graphics, its been one of the worst FF in the series.

When are developers going to learn graphics without gameplay still equal bad game.
Me as a game fan and a FF fan couldnt give two fecks about the technical achievements of the PS3 or if its better or worse than the xbox...
All i wanted was a great final fantasy game, and i couldnt care less if square ported it to the bloody etcha sketch as well.

Instead it was a lifeless and confusing experience followed by run, battle, run, battle...pointless cut scene.(which were no better in emotion than the cut scenes in 7/8/9 etc).
Shame on square, was releasing this game and forgetting the core fan base.
People tell me the game has evolved and this was progression..bollox this was stripped and dumbed down to appeal the masses.
Final for me is about connecting with the characters, its like a interactive story/journey but in all honesty i couldn't give two monkeys about any of these characters.
4/10
Buy Demons Souls on import instead.

I'm thinking of buying this game... but as a comparison, how do you feel about VII, X and XII?

In fairness, I want a remake of FF7 to be basically exactly that a remake. Any changes to the original gameplay would be bollocks. The only thing they could do would be to add a few more mini-games and such to the Golden Saucer.

So whats the general consensus on this bad boy.. Worth it, or would picking up the two old versions on the Playstation store be more enthralling?
I'm biased as I love VII and I've recently played through it and VIII again on my PSP after getting them off the store, but I would definately recommend getting those two over XIII. But if amazing graphics and nice cutscenes do it for you XIII could be worth a look, obviously the visuals of the two PS1 games aren't up to much these days so they might feel dated to some.

I would not want to really put anybody off playing it because what i think is only my personal opinion. You could really enjoy it.

Its nowhere near as good as 7 (but very few games ever will be) 10 had so much more to do and was a much better experience even though it had faults.
12 i didn't enjoy at all, but i still think its a better overall game than 13.

On a positive note, i liked the battle system..it was fun and does employ a tactical approach. But even in this i found it easily to exploit and soon become a button spamming robotic venture.

NO!

Never played it, never will. Only watched about 20 minutes of game-time in my life, and that was this last version of the game. Looked rubbish.

Hope this helps!

V was the best. That said I've only played that and VII and VIII which is when I decided that overall they were shit.

Bored of this. On chapter 13 but I have no will to go on.

Not a bad game, but suffers from repetitiveness badly.

So after finishing the dragon age expac i thought i really need a gripping story again... so i bought this... and my goodness it is boring, ive only just got up to the levelling part (in the crystal place), the graphics are freakin awesome but the gameplay is soooo boring. I remember X being alot more fun. Mind you im only 3 hours into it.

The english voice actors are terrible, everyone has an orgasm every 1-2 minutes it appears and there is what looks to be a 14 year old girl who has me weirdly turned on... especially when she reveals her 'branding', a whiny kid with a super gay name, everyones footsteps are way to loud and apparently swords and fists cut and punch their way through massive metal robot things.

Im guessing this is something that will grow on me like robot unicorn attack, well gay at first but after some time invested it will be great.

HERE COMES YOUR HERO!!!!!!! SHUT THE feck UP!!!!!

It is a fantasy game, swords and fists have been used in other final fantasy games to kill such things as tanks, trains and mech-suits. It's not meant to be taken overly seriously.

I thought the English voices were alright, Hope develops as the game goes on (albeit with a shit name), the guy who does the voice for Snow is good but he's given some cheesy lines, Lightning is done well and Vanille didn't actually bother me until someone told me to listen carefully during the battles (which was after i'd finished the game).

Oh and don't worry she is actually 18, so you're not a pedo.

18 - She certainly doesn't look it, but we know what the Japs are like with this Lolicon.

Can't actually do this boss on Chapter 4 literally can't do it.

It's when Light and Hope fight Odin.

Any tips!?

Have you got any of those sprays you can cast before fights that give you haste and things? That might help.

Make sure you've got the Medic, Commando paradigm set up. Make sure you either get shell and protect or use a spray to have them on, then basically switch between the Medic/Commando paradigm and the two magic casters until the gauge is filled.

This was the first boss i had to retry a couple of times, damn eidolons.

Yeah im familiar with final fantasy things like swords and fists killing things. I thought 10 was an awesome game.

Just funny when a small female gets pissed off charges at a big metal thing and hits it 3 times in a cut scene reminds me of say... blinkin from robin hood men in tights fighting the pole.

finally finished it, got 5 stars on orphan and found it a really easy battle, though thats down to me getting the growth egg before leaving pulse, i was pretty buff and breezed through the latter stages.

the second half of the game is vast improvement on the first but overall i have to say its a poor game, a real slog and a stern test of your patience/fandom. i finished it cuz thats what i do with final fantasies not cuz i wanted too if you know what i mean

it didn't have to be poor though, theres enough there to have made something excellent but they held back the freedom of control for the battle team for too long and removed all the exploration and side quests which are quite often the best bits of any final fantasy game.

i can finally start Demon Souls now

After reading a bunch of reviews and comments I was pretty dissappointed with the story and voice acting. I mean Sazh aside because he's quality. The game is definately much better once you get to pulse and its decent from there. But up till there it wasnt very compelling at all.

Cheers for the tips.

Did it last night. The funny thing was I had actually done it about 5 or 6 times previously but guess what? I didn't press X so I just carried on fighting it unaware haha. I had filled the bar everytime I had tried it before then read something online that said I needed to press X when it was filled :lol:

Now on Disc 2 Chapter 5.

Getting into it more and more now.

Getting into it more and more.

On chapter 5 with Hope and Light and got to a boss. Killed me first time but will try again tonight.

I love it when you use Odin.

 Probably should have mentioned to press X when the bar's full, but at least you know now.

I still play occasionally to grind out some exp, i'm level 5 on all the main three skills and level 2 on everything else. Bloody annoying but i'll get there in the end and beat the rest of those challenges.

Hilarious really as I actually filled the bar 5 or 6 times playing it and then I kept going but it wouldn't fill anymore haha.

I'm on the Boss: Aster Protoflorian

Only tried once last night and killed me instantly. Seems like a hard one!

One thing I will say it doesn't seem to have (at least so far, I'm on chapter 5) is the exploring and talking to people etc as you did in previous games.

I used to love pottering about and talking to people then going into a shop to buy potions etc

I've wiped the dust from my old friend PS2 two days ago, and I'm enjoying myself like I haven't in a long time playing THE Final Fantasy! Sephiroth is the best bad guy character ever - I wanna have his babies...:nervous:

Currently on the start of disc 2, in the Snowy field, off to get that Alexander materia...

The more i went back to that game, the more i loved it. 13 is all about the story, not that much of a bad thing but it does limit the replay.

Any news on versus?

This.

The bolded part.

I've heard somewhere it's not going to be a RPG, more of a action game, any truth in this?

Weastey?
