Aha, cheers Ixion. I think i'll do that then, currently in Taejin's Tower.

I thought the start of chapter 11 was superb, such a jump in difficulty and the scale of it was brilliant.

Hope you get to fight that big bugger that wanders around in the background. I tried fighting one of the huge dino critters and got stomped to death in seconds so i suspect some more grinding might be in order. Filled my crystarium to the level 4 for the three main jobs, and saving up the points now as i know it'll expand again later.

You have a couple of very hard bosses to come before the end of that chapter!

What is your main party and set-up. I've got Lightning (Ravenger/Commando), Fang (Sentinel/Commando) and Hope (Medic/Synergist). Find that is working well, Fang does a ton of damage as a commando when someone is staggered!

Oh right i look forward to that!

I've got Snow (Commando/Sentinel), Lightning (Ravenger/Medic) and Hope (Ravenger/Medic).

I never did any upgrading in the linear part, but here i've done a fair bit. Snow's strength is now 1100 and something and Hopes magic is about the same, Lightning is my all rounder.

Exactly the same as me, Fang has like 1400 strength, Hope 1300 magic and Lightning is about 1000 strength and 800 magic. I like Lightning, best character personality wise and best all round character in battles I think.

I'm wondering if it's possible to go back to Pulse after the final boss. Cause i might go through to that and then plow back through the mission's, if that's the case.

Oh and i really enjoy the drum solo halfway through the chocobo music.

Oh and someone mentioned earlier about being annoyed that when the leader died it was game over. I've played a fair few RPG's like that, it's a good thing really as it makes you more cautious and helps keep you on your toes.

I think I'm fighting the final boss right now. Its going to be a real pain in the arse, might take several attempts!

Having seen this being played for nearly a week now, im not that that impressed. My main criticism is there is simply (so far) not very much you actually get to do. In terms of what you, as the player, actually do it is simply a case of battle after battle after battle. You can customise your characters and setup (though the character progression and weapon upgrade system is extremely linear) and you move about a bit on the map, but thats it.

For a pretty big release I expect more than just a list of about 1500 battles to go through, all with the same interface.

Also, the music is very repetitive.

Yeah mate, it's a very marmite game though. I think you either love it or you hate it.

That being said i can see the problems the "hardcore" RPG crowd would have with the first 20 odd hours. Very linear follow this path, kill these guys, watch this CG. But i didn't mind it so much, it's not too disimilar from a lot of other games in that sense, and damn does it look good.

But once you get to chapter 11 it all kicks off, suddenly you can explore! You can wander off and battle your heart out against whatever wandering critter takes your fancy. You can ride chocobos about and find little secret areas and optional bosses that will kill you very quickly (this is where the retry function is very useful), but it's great.

Of course to get to that point you have to do the preceeding 20 odd hours, and i can see some people's point in that some battles can be reduced to about 2 button presses but that's getting you into the swing of things. I'm getting into regular battles now where i have had to switch to "Combat Clinic" (a paradigm with two healers one sentinel/tank) and basically soak up damage whilst i try to get some health back to keep going. I personally really like the battle system and think that it's basically a fast paced non-waiting version of X's.

The most obvious comparison to this is X (and to an extent X-2), in that you follow a linear path around and then a wide plain opens before you and you can explore. But sadly you can't backtrack to old areas from earlier in the game later on and there are no main towns you can return to to shop etc.

I think it's a very good game, brilliant graphics and a good story that the linearity actually helps push on at a fast pace. The battle system starts as tedious, but becomes very tactical later on.

So basically in answer to your question, yes i do.

Finished! I'll probably give more detailed thoughts on it later but overall I'd say its an 8/10 game, better than XII but not up there with the best of the series, some great moments but very flawed.

Hmm... I'm pretty sure you would. Like i said the first part is linear, the last is very open and if you liked Final Fantasy X (which i'm sure you did if my rusty memory's working), then you'll like it.

Hmmmm well I can pick it up today for 34.99....

If you've got it burning a hole then get it. I'm almost certain you'll like it, but there's still that doubt which means I won't actually know if you do or not until you play it yourself.

It's one of those games where it seems the experience could differ greatly even between people with similar tastes.

EDIT: Oh and Ixion, any news on whether travel back to Pulse is a go after the final boss?

What chapter are you on Walrus? And i think you'll find every Final Fantasy keeps the same interface for battles throughout, that's not a big surprise.

Im not playing it myself but watching my girlfriend and contributing. She is now on about chapter 12. Either way though, its not the format of the battles which bothers me at all (i know its the same in basically all FF games) but just the fact that you do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING other than a little walking around, watching some cutscenes, improving a very linear character progression tree, and battles.

There just isnt enough variance of actual interactive content.

Not really spoilers but...
Yes you can, after the credits you can make a new save, load that up and it takes you back to the very last area before the boss and you can walk out of there and use a Warp gate and go back to Pulse.

Its probably a good idea to do things that way actually as your Crystarium grid gets expanded one last time when you defeat the final boss and it carries over to that save. I guess thats the only way to master all the jobs.

Beat Shiva and now on chapter 4. Haven't had chance to hammer it due to work and gym etc.

I must say the menus are amazing, absolutely gorgeous.

My 'review' after finishing it:

After to finishing it I think an 8/10 is a fair score, it some great moments but theres a lot of things that frustrated me. I had fairly low expectations after XII so I'm not that dissapointed, but there are a number of things that really hold the game back.

As for story and characters, both were an improvement on XII (except Balthier!) but the plot was confusing in places and some of the characters irritated me. Lightning was a good character and I actually wish she had been featured more, theres a lot of time you spend controlling other characters but I found her to be the most fun to play as and the most interesting personality wise. I liked Snow also, hes quite a cliché but his voice actor was good (as it was across the board really) and he has some cool moments during the game. Hope is very annoying for about 3/4 of the game but by the end his character has grown and I could put up with him. Sazh was ok, but Fang and Vanille I wasn't a fan of and didn't really feel anything towards them during the ending. The ending was also somewhat confusing.

Monster designs were ok, I prefered the Pulse monsters as they were more traditional. I'm not a big fan of turning the summons into Transformers, but it does work nicely for a couple of cutscenes late in the game which I guess was the intention.

The battle system had the potential to be great but I think it takes too much control away from the player, its similar to XII in that the game plays itself. You have two AI characters you can't control and all you need do for your character is select Auto-Battle/Heal at the appropriate moment, then switch their jobs if your health is low and thats about it. I prefer the more traditional approach where you control all your characters, I think job switching was done best in X-2 and the general battle system of X is still the best.

I liked the music, I wouldn't mind listening to the soundtrack again as there were a couple of tracks that I really liked and got stuck in my head (one I think is called 'Desperate Struggle' which I really liked). Graphics don't really mean much to me in any game but it does look nice I guess, the character models are impressive and the environments are very well done, the CG cutscenes are nicely rendered too. Overall the presentation through-out the game is all expertly done.

I think everyone already knows what most consider the biggest problem with the game and I agree, it is far to linear. It must be the most linear Final Fantasy to date, I heard things open-up by a certain point but thats only if you enjoy the XII style Mark Hunts, if like me and you don't then the game never opens up at all and its just a collection of linear dungeons. No towns to visit, no real shops or inns, no NPCs to talk too, puzzles to solve, no airship, hardly any minigames or fun little diversions. You don't even get to select your battle party until very late in the game, you're forced for a long time to play through linear dungeons with pre-selected 2 person teams and it feels like a chore. The leveling-up system also feels like a poor-man's sphere grid.

Some may compare it to X and say that was also linear, but it did have towns for you to visit and you travelled between them and could go back and revist all the locations at the end of the game, it had various minigames and temples with puzzles in each town, and just felt a lot more complete than XIII. One example where the linearity really bugged me was the Nautilus level, my initial reaction was cool a next-gen Gold Saucer, and the characters even say they will take a break from things and have fun, but nope, theres nothing whatsoever to do and it becomes just another linear dungeon to battle through. That was a big oppourtunity missed, like most of the locations.

I'm sure some won't care about the linearity but it bothered me and would seriously put me off playing through it again. There are some very cool moments, some cutscenes I would love to be able to rewatch and some nice interactions with the characters, but I think gameplay holds it back. Its better than XII but I wouldn't put it alongside the best games of the series.

Ixion you say you liked Snow's voice, the only other game i've heard him in before was Persona 4. Sorry if i go on about this too much, but seriously any fan of the JRPG genre needs to play that game. It's another that starts slow but once it gets going you don't want to put it down. Very much story driven and the amount of dialogue is nuts.

You can control all of the party in battles but it's the same as 13 in that if the main character dies it's game over. It has great voiceover work in it (in my opinion), and you can pick it up for about £15 now.

Just finished XIII. It's not perfect but I enjoyed it after that awful tutorial part was over. It's a 8.5 on the Richter scale;)
So when is Versus out?

No confirmed date yet for versus. I think it may be this year sometime though.

Just about to see the Primarch here on chapter 9, can anyone tell me what the maximum level is for commando, ravager etc?

At the end of chapter 9. This boss is quite difficult, anyone any useful info on how to survive the Destrudo attack?

Is it a case of levelling up weapons, accessories and the crystarium. Or making the leader someone who has the sentinel role?
