That 1 million apparently does not include the bundle.

Very nice looking game. Not Uncharted levels, but still.

Final Fantasy XIII's Cut Scenes Detailed at SIGGRAPH Asia
A glimpse behind the scenes at the development of the long-awaited RPG.

The Asian version of computer graphics expo SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, is being held this week at Pacifico Yokohama. Square Enix had its graphics masters in attendance on the 16th for a revealing lecture titled "FFXIII Real time Cut Scene Work Flow."

Impress Watch posted a summary of the speech, which was given by Event Motion Director Yusuke Tanaka and other members of the game's visual staff.

Just a few stats. Final Fantasy XIII has nine hours of cut scenes. This is split between pre-rendered movies, created by Square Enix's internal movie production team "Visual Works," and six hours of real time rendered scenes. The latter area was the topic of the lecture, and according to Tanaka, it took 16 months to produce the full lot.

The Impress article goes on to describe the work process for creating the real time cut scenes, including converting story boards to video, motion capture recording, facial animation work, development tools, lip synching, hair and cloth animation, physics, and special effects.

I'm not going to have time to summarize it all, so you'll have to Google it. Or, just look at the pictures, which include lots of FFXIII development shots. Towards the bottom of the article, you can see some familiar FFXIII scenes without post processing effects. There are also grabs of some of the Crystal Tools development apps.

So, it has 3 hours of 1080p video on the PS3.

Nomura finally speaks on Versus !

Now Final Fantasy XIII is out, and flying off Japanese shelves, it’s time for Square Enix to talk about their other project – Playstation 3 title Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Director Tetsuya Nomura has given details in the latest Famitsu magazine, of how Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s graphics engine has been updated: namely to ensure cut-scene CGI and gameplay are identical. Yummy indeed. He also claims the game is set to be the “dark” Final Fantasy people have been waiting for.

This will be the game of game of games.

First impressions from the geeks on ff13 forums are not so good. Lots of negative feedback: very little exploration, very linear and scripted, no towns, etc...

I'll be getting it in 2 days, so will post impressions if I have time to play.

Awful ratings from japanese consumers on amazon as well for an ff game... Amazon.co.jpF ƒJƒXƒ^ƒ}[ƒŒƒrƒ…[: ƒtƒ@ƒCƒiƒ‹ƒtƒ@ƒ“ƒ^ƒW[XIII

Comments such as ''ゲームがしたいのであって美麗な映像が見たいのではない'', 「ゲーム」としては残念 as a game it's sad/pitiful/a tragedy, ''I wanted to play a game, not watch a nice-looking movie'', and ''I couldn't stand it anymore'', ''it was a painful experience'' and ''chillingly delivered a nightmare dragon ball R movie''... and lots and lots of crying (knowing japanese, I can imagine their tears streaming down their cheeks whilst typing the reviews) about how disappointed they are and how their beloved franchise has died and how square enix's failure with this game will influence the gaming industry...

Some complaints about it being linear, no levelling up when you beat enemies, no buying armory etc... :nervous:

X is very linear but I enjoyed that, just needs a captivating story and characters to make up for it.

From what I've read its similar to X's grid system, and not traditional gain exp and go up a level which increases the various stats.

Oh I do love a good list. Thats not to bad really, I think for the majority it comes down to 6 or 7. I've finished all the games except 11 which I only played for a short time, I'd rank them:

1) Final Fantasy VII
2) Final Fantasy IV
3) Final Fantasy X
4) Final Fantasy V
5) Final Fantasy VI
6) Final Fantasy VIII
7) Final Fantasy IX
8) Final Fantasy
9) Final Fantasy III
10) Final Fantasy II
11) Final Fantasy XI
12) Final Fantasy XII

And if we were including X-2 and Tactics, then X-2 would come in just after VIII, and Tactics ahead of V.

Not played XI so will have to chuck it at last place.

12) XI
11) II
10) I
9) III
8) XII
7) V
6) IX
5) IV
4) X
3) VII
2) VIII
1) VI

Final Fantasy 2 i just couldn't get over the horrible levelling system they used. And i'll probably get some jip for putting VIII ahead of VII but it's a personal preference.

Good to see i'm not the only one who was horribly let down by 12.

My top 3 are VII, X, VI, the rest can't really remember to rank...

I actually really liked 12, but meh.

12 - Final Fantasy 11
11 - Final Fantasy 2
10 - Final Fantasy 3
09 - Final Fantasy 8
08 - Final Fantasy 8
07 - Final Fantasy 9
06 - Final Fantasy 12
05 - Final Fantasy 4
04 - Final Fantasy 10
03 - Final Fantasy 5
02 - Final Fantasy 7
01 - Final Fantasy 6

Yesterday, however, Square Enix kicked off an official bus tour for Final Fantasy XIII. A Lightning-branded black bus will be driving around San Francisco for a few days and offering the public (and journalists, too) a chance to actually play the English-language version of Final Fantasy XIII for the first time. Being a Final Fantasy enthusiast and having a long and complex history with buses, it made sense for me to hunt down the tour bus and pop inside to play. I was joined by my colleague and friend Ryan Geddes, whose only real concern was finding as many chocobos as humanly possible. He, as an advance note, did not find any.

The interior of the Lightning Bus, as I'll call it, was lined with eye-catching flat panel TVs, which were running the recently-released International Trailer as well as playable demos. Both PS3s and 360s were being used to show off the game, which was great as I was able to see both versions running side-by-side. As expected, the 360 version was noticeably less crisp than its PS3 counterpart, but it still ran nicely.

Not long now! :)

Oh dear!

Final Fantasy XIII Had Lots of Deleted Content (andriasang.com blog, 01.13.2010)

Final Fantasy XIII Had Lots of Deleted Content

Art director says enough content removed to make another game.

We already knew about the Chocobo farm, but Nautilus Park apparently once had a zoo as well.

Final Fantasy XIII is a big game with a massive world to explore (cough -- once you get past all those linear paths -- cough). But it apparently could have been much bigger.

Square Enix specialty site FF Reunion has a short summary of a new interview with FFXIII art director Isamu Kamikokuryou. In the interview, Kamikokuryou discusses some of the content that was deleted from the game.

Apparently, the FFXIII design team created a number of areas that ended up not going into the final product. How much? Enough to create an additional game, according to Kamikokuryou.

Kamikokuryou shared a few locations with the magazine. Apparently, the design team created a full area surrounding Lightning's home. This area resembled a park. There was also a secret base for resistance group Nora inside a shop somewhere. Nautiuls Park, an amusement facility, at one point also included a zoo.

The content was already running on actual PS3 hardware, it seems, but was left out due to considerations for game volume and overall game balanace.

The FF Reunion site is itself not sure of the source of this interview, but I imagine it would be Famitsu, as the magazine has been running a series of interviews with FFXIII's designers since the game's release. Perhaps we can look forward to even more insights in coming issues.

Then we see what's on the PS3 BD.

31.09GB Movies
3.58GB Zone
2.98GB Sys 1&2
256MB PS3 Update

It's basically a 38GB disc, 12GB is missing, and this is going to be a 5 disc XB360 game unless they compress the hell out of the video and audio.

This is the XB360s fault, isn't it?

So BD discs can hold up to 50gb? Didn't realise that, christ they could have gone to town. If that's the case then Versus might end up being something special.

Yet to understand why they don't release full content on PS3 and main points on XBOX. Rockstar have given XBOX fans 2 GTA exclusives yet Sony fans get nothing. Especially given the fact that Sony fans were their bread and butter for many years this is really poor from the developers. Should have shown some loyalty to them on top of versus.

25GB single layered, 50GB dual layered. I think there are 100GB discs available aswell, though I don't think they are compatible with PS3. Weaste will correct me on that I'm sure.

No release date has been set. They did show off some gameplay footage a a show in Japan soon after XIII was released though. I'd imagine it'll be here a year from now, though that's just a wild guess.
