I'm tempted to go onto youtube and see some gameplay video's. But that could just about spoil everything.

Final Fantasy XIII's Cut Scenes Detailed at SIGGRAPH Asia
A glimpse behind the scenes at the development of the long-awaited RPG.
The Asian version of computer graphics expo SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, is being held this week at Pacifico Yokohama. Square Enix had its graphics masters in attendance on the 16th for a revealing lecture titled "FFXIII Real time Cut Scene Work Flow."
Impress Watch posted a summary of the speech, which was given by Event Motion Director Yusuke Tanaka and other members of the game's visual staff.
Just a few stats. Final Fantasy XIII has nine hours of cut scenes. This is split between pre-rendered movies, created by Square Enix's internal movie production team "Visual Works," and six hours of real time rendered scenes. The latter area was the topic of the lecture, and according to Tanaka, it took 16 months to produce the full lot.
The Impress article goes on to describe the work process for creating the real time cut scenes, including converting story boards to video, motion capture recording, facial animation work, development tools, lip synching, hair and cloth animation, physics, and special effects.
I'm not going to have time to summarize it all, so you'll have to Google it. Or, just look at the pictures, which include lots of FFXIII development shots. Towards the bottom of the article, you can see some familiar FFXIII scenes without post processing effects. There are also grabs of some of the Crystal Tools development apps.
Now Final Fantasy XIII is out, and flying off Japanese shelves, it’s time for Square Enix to talk about their other project – Playstation 3 title Final Fantasy Versus XIII.
Director Tetsuya Nomura has given details in the latest Famitsu magazine, of how Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s graphics engine has been updated: namely to ensure cut-scene CGI and gameplay are identical. Yummy indeed. He also claims the game is set to be the “dark” Final Fantasy people have been waiting for.
No levelling up?!
I can't wait for Versus, going to be pretty epic.
Yesterday, however, Square Enix kicked off an official bus tour for Final Fantasy XIII. A Lightning-branded black bus will be driving around San Francisco for a few days and offering the public (and journalists, too) a chance to actually play the English-language version of Final Fantasy XIII for the first time. Being a Final Fantasy enthusiast and having a long and complex history with buses, it made sense for me to hunt down the tour bus and pop inside to play. I was joined by my colleague and friend Ryan Geddes, whose only real concern was finding as many chocobos as humanly possible. He, as an advance note, did not find any.
The interior of the Lightning Bus, as I'll call it, was lined with eye-catching flat panel TVs, which were running the recently-released International Trailer as well as playable demos. Both PS3s and 360s were being used to show off the game, which was great as I was able to see both versions running side-by-side. As expected, the 360 version was noticeably less crisp than its PS3 counterpart, but it still ran nicely.
I see the chocobo is still alive and running.
Final Fantasy XIII Had Lots of Deleted Content
Art director says enough content removed to make another game.
We already knew about the Chocobo farm, but Nautilus Park apparently once had a zoo as well.
Final Fantasy XIII is a big game with a massive world to explore (cough -- once you get past all those linear paths -- cough). But it apparently could have been much bigger.
Square Enix specialty site FF Reunion has a short summary of a new interview with FFXIII art director Isamu Kamikokuryou. In the interview, Kamikokuryou discusses some of the content that was deleted from the game.
Apparently, the FFXIII design team created a number of areas that ended up not going into the final product. How much? Enough to create an additional game, according to Kamikokuryou.
Kamikokuryou shared a few locations with the magazine. Apparently, the design team created a full area surrounding Lightning's home. This area resembled a park. There was also a secret base for resistance group Nora inside a shop somewhere. Nautiuls Park, an amusement facility, at one point also included a zoo.
The content was already running on actual PS3 hardware, it seems, but was left out due to considerations for game volume and overall game balanace.
The FF Reunion site is itself not sure of the source of this interview, but I imagine it would be Famitsu, as the magazine has been running a series of interviews with FFXIII's designers since the game's release. Perhaps we can look forward to even more insights in coming issues.

256MB PS3 Update
Oh dear!
Final Fantasy XIII Had Lots of Deleted Content (andriasang.com blog, 01.13.2010)
Then we see what's on the PS3 BD.
It's basically a 38GB disc, 12GB is missing, and this is going to be a 5 disc XB360 game unless they compress the hell out of the video and audio.
This is the XB360s fault, isn't it?
So BD discs can hold up to 50gb? Didn't realise that, christ they could have gone to town. If that's the case then Versus might end up being something special.
