So BD discs can hold up to 50gb? Didn't realise that, christ they could have gone to town. If that's the case then Versus might end up being something special.

50GB is the base spec for a dual layer disc, yes, but at CES, Sony and Panasonic showed off a way that they could add an extra 33% to the base disc that existing players can read with a firmware update.

So it will be 33.4GB per layer instead of 25. Other companies are researching the addition of extra layers without the need to change the hardware.

Most films are dual layer, however the only two games I know of that use a dual layer disc are FFXIII and MGS4.

Yet to understand why they don't release full content on PS3 and main points on XBOX. Rockstar have given XBOX fans 2 GTA exclusives yet Sony fans get nothing. Especially given the fact that Sony fans were their bread and butter for many years this is really poor from the developers. Should have shown some loyalty to them on top of versus.

Why didn't Sony secure exclusivity for this world wide instead of just Japan? It's sold almost 2m units in Japan so far and shifted a lot of hardware. Square Enix is a company that Sony has a quite substantial stake in also.

Maybe they thought that people that play this will also want to play Versus, thus that main XIII doesn't really matter? I'm waiting for E3 to see if Versus really is exclusive, or maybe even if they rename Versus as XV.

The linearity for the first part of XIII concerns me in regards to have they really done it through design to keep the story tighter, or was something changed when they decided to port to XB360? Because I don't think that XB360 arcade owners would enjoy switching 4 or 5 discs in and out all of the time.

You'll be able to install the lot of it on the HDD I suppose, if you have one, but even with a 120GB, there's 33% of your HDD gone.

360 owners can go an get fecked. Pay for a substandard console in the arcade, get substandard games, why should another brand be penalized for their uselessness. fecking disgrace you hear me Weaste, fecking disgrace.

A lot of Final Fantasy games start quite linear. Depends on how linear, if you go to towns and can't get back to them until quite a bit later when you get some transport then it's no different from the majority of Final Fantasy's.

Its got mixed reviews from gamers, its been said.

They said the game is far too linear. That being said its still worthwhile to get the game because, of course, it looks epic.

This is one of many reviews that lay rip into FFXIII. Even though he's only played HALF of the game.

When I referred to previous Final Fantasy games as being “linear,” I was at least speaking metaphorically. Final Fantasy XIII is a straight line. Every level is one long Hallway of Death, and you run down its interminable length, never moving left or right, always running forward. There is always only one thing to do next, and it is always either fight a short battle or watch a long movie.

These never-ending fight-tubes are the single most ridiculous part of XIII’s design. “Monotonous” is the word for it, sometimes excruciatingly so. But it’s how the game corrals you into fighting its scripted battle sequences in exactly the order it wants you to.

From someone on NeoGAF that imported it.

Chapters 1 - 9 are completely linear. You get forced to use specific characters for each of these chapters, no swapping out with anyone else. They're all story based. Basically everyone is essentially following paths to meet each other again I guess you could say.

Chapter 10 you meet up with everyone, party choice becomes available for the first time.

Chapter 11 is completely open in scale. Large environment with a lot of exploration/missions to do. This chapter is also very very long.

Chapter 12 is back in a more restricted environment, think area shown in the E3 2006 trailer. You're back traveling down paths with a limited area to explore.

Chapter 13 is a terrible dungeon. I didn't like it at all actually. The lead up to the final boss was more tedious than anything. At this point though you can go back and explore more in the areas in chapters 11 and 12. You also get to go back here after you finish the game for post game missions and whatnot.

Ohh looks like I'm getting the collectors edition, I wanted a cover with just the logo on a white background.

I wanted to replay FFXII, as unlike some others, I love it. But I can't find my memory card for my PS2. Buggerations.

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed that Square intends on churning out post-release DLC for the hotly anticipated RPG.

At least, that’s according to a translation provided by the chaps at NeoGAF based on an interview with Kitase in OPM Benelux, where the Square Enix bigwig is quoted saying: "We did prepare a DLC but it will arrive a little later in the West.”

Elsewhere, Kitase revealed that the firm originally flirted with the idea of adding additional content to the western version of FFXIII, though ultimately pulled out as they felt the extra development time and delay wasn’t worth it.

Final Fantasy XIII is due out in North America and Europe on March 9.

Is the European version identical to the Japanese version or will the western version get extra content for the long wait?

Kitase: At first we had plans to release the game simultaneously worldwide, so we had the intention to deliver identical version between the regions. When we noticed that we wouldn't make it, we decided to release the game as fast as possible in the west after its release in Japan. We initially had doubts to add extra content to the western version but then it would have taken the international version more months of delay. We did prepare a DLC but it will arrive a little later in the west.

We all known one of the things that it's most criticized as a flaw from Final Fantasy XIII is the linearity and the lack of towns. This was a result of the move to next-gen, that made hard for the team to do a less linear game or to include bigger towns, because of the amount of HD graphics they would have to add.

According to Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the game, that's the exact same reason of why an eventual remake of Final Fantasy VII would be very difficult to do for the PS3. If you remember the game, it had a lot of towns, each unique in its own, and they would struggle to develop it because they'd need to basically redo the game in the same way, only now with better graphics.

“This issue is related to whether a Final Fantasy 7 remake will happen or not. It is very hard to make games on PlayStation 3 in the same style as the games in that era had. Making graphics will take enormous time.”

That tells us two things. First, there's no Final Fantasy VII remake in the works for now. Second, it was considered in some way or another, otherwise Kitase wouldn't talk about the difficulties

And just a reminder, FFVIII is released on the European PS Store today. Probably be at £7.99.

It varies each week when they update it. It's usually around 5pm though, give or take an hour.

I've got it on disc too, but it doesn't work on my PS3 for some reason. But yeah it's good to have it on the HDD aswell.

I've been waiting for VIII to go up for weeks now, can't believe we've had to wait so much longer than Japan and America! I only ever played through VIII once back when it was originally released and haven't touched it since so I'm looking forward to going back through it, see if it holds up well, I liked it back in the day.

Cheers Elvis. I've still got all the old Final Fantasy games on disc (6,7,8,9). The only ps1 games i still have!

But playing them through a ps2 on my tele made them look awful. VII looks much better through the PS3 so i hope it can do the same for VIII.

Why not just buy a $20 PSN card from Ebay and buy it from the US store.

The Hong Kong store has loads of Final Fantasys on it, but they're in Japanese unfortunately.

Just reading that quote from Elvis had me thinking. The last great RPG to have a fully detailed world map and towns was probably Dragon Quest VIII. Will that be the last, ever?

I hope not, i'd love them to make another as i enjoy them much more. Even FF12 felt too enclosed.

Mine has just finished downloading, so took about 50 minutes, not too bad! Now to put it on my PSP!
