Final Fantasy games are not short. So while big titles from other developers might be clocking in at somewhere between 7 and 9 hours, don’t expect a short Final Fantasy XIII experience. Expect a long haul.

In a recent interview (pictured below), FFXIII director Motomu Toriyama noted, “For XIII, the size of the entire game is considerable. Just running through the main story takes experienced players over 50 hours. For the first time, I think it’s possible to play through in full in about 60 hours or so.”

Meaty! Players have been waiting three years for this game, and it sounds like they’ve got a big game ahead of them to experience.

Final Fantasy XIII Is 50 To 60 Hours Long | Kotaku Australia

Niii-iii-ce

A good job to! If i play a Final Fantasy game that's only 6 or 7 hours long it won't have been made by Square-Enix. I've already clocked in about 30 hours on Star Ocean and i'm only the second disc, good times.

So, the Japanese magazine Famitsu gave it 39/40.

Rough translation I nicked:

10: "Although the game is linear until the midway point, the story is substantial, like no FF before it, with its own distinctive appeal. The battles based around changing characters' roles are fresh and highly strategic. The tempo is speedy and you get very excited when fighting strong enemies. Being able to restart battles is a user-friendly feature I'm happy about.

9: "Unquestionably the highest echelon of event and movie scenes. Moreover, changing Optimas on a dime, the varied abilities and being able to use multiple magics at once bring real exhilaration to the battles. That high quality is unfortunately offset by a story that stays linear until the midway point. The lack of gimmicks during the middle of the game also worried me."

10: "The overwhelming graphics expressing every nook and cranny of this unique world, along with the praiseworthy direction, moved me!! The battle system is applicable both to beginners and micro-managers. The fights progress quickly, and have ratings, so you never grow tired and can always battle with a feeling of urgency. The melancholic story is also so dramatic, you can't tear your eyes away from it."

10: "I doff my hat to the overwhelming graphics and story. Since the game's various systems become denser as the story progresses, you find yourself pulled ever deeper into the experience. The summon battles take careful planning and strategy, so I was frustrated a few times, but the feeling of achievement when you win is something special. You'll be sorry if you don't play this!"

Square has also officially said in an interview in the magazine:

Video and sound are compressed on 360
PS3 version is on a dual-layer bluray disc and so the 360 version will have to switch DVDs

Some people are reporting that another Japanese Magazine Dengeki gave it 100/100 and say something along the lines of:

- You get a custom theme after you get a certain trophy.
- Even when a party member leaves he/she will still get the same amount of CP.
- No loading before and after battles.
- The picture used on the character status page moves(we've seen this before in one of the TGS demo videos).
- Most intense/exciting battle in FF history.
- Save points are well made/made with details (weird to translate).
- Cut scenes length is just right.
- Editor:Game deserves to not only get 100 points but 120 points (100 is the maximum a game can get for a review given by Dengeki).

Nii-iice.

Can't wait. Still some time to go unfortunately.

Btw i just had a play of FFXII for the first time. Absolutely hate the battle system. What were they thinking ? I couldn't be fussed to carry on with it.

Famistu gave XII 40/40 so take their opinion with a pinch of salt!

Those reviews are encouraging though.

XII was fecking brilliant, i'd give full marks too.

Honestly? I wasn't the biggest fan of the battle system at all. I just setup those auto things (can't remember what they're called) and just walked, stopped, waited for them to die, and carried on. It meant that you didn't have to do anything during battles if you set yourself up right, it was tedious. I much prefer the old atb battles.

It was the game that sold it on me. I think as far as story etc it was miles ahead of the ones out after it which i value as high as a good fighting system. To be honest the fighting is my least favourite part of these games! i just like the character development and storylines.

We're talking about XII right? Vaan and Balthier and the bunny girl? I thought that had one of the weakest stories out of the Final Fantasy's so far. The graphics were tip top but i just didn't care about the characters (apart from Balthier).

Each to their own though, i've always been a fan of a good battle system though because you're going to be having a lot of them at least make it enjoyable!

The storyline was the biggest dissapointment for me in XII, and most of the characters too except for Balthier. The battle system I didn't hate but it was sort of like a single player MMORPG, I prefer the traditional battles.

I liked XII, I like all the FF games, but it would be one of my least favourites from the series.

feck my roman numerals!

i was going on about VII not XII

i'm an idiot.

 Thank god for that!

To this day number 10 is the best game I've ever played

10 is quality, i think they struck a good balance in that game. VII and VIII were all about the story and the more human nature of the characters. IX and X went back to the old school style of each person having a specific role and i really enjoyed the battle aspect more for it.

Within recent Japanese gaming magazine interviews, Tetsuya Nomura has stated that Versus XIII's gameplay will be a realistic derivation of Kingdom Hearts's battle system with some elements of a third-person shooter aspect. Nomura has also stated that the game will depart from the light and magical aesthetic of his previous directorial games (i.e. Kingdom Hearts) and opt for a darker, bleaker world that is intended to counter previous Final Fantasy installments. In formulating a realistic world, Nomura has stated that he wants the characters to be "believable" and thus realistic. As a testament towards his desire for realism, in the PlayStation Premier trailer, in contrast to previous Final Fantasy titles, Versus XIII had a greater display of graphic violence with an instance of blood. [6]

Nomura has also stated in Dengeki PlayStation that he aims to create previously unseen "tricky" battle sequences, reminiscent of the CGI film, Final Fantasy VII Advent Children.[4]

Final Fantasy have two mega games on the way. Versus and XIII will kill the competition off.

Final Fantasy VIII has blood in the opening sequence. VII has blood all over the walls of the Shinra building.

Versus does sound very good though, should be a cracking game. Is Uematsu at all involved in these projects or not?

Nope, afraid not. He's seemed to have been overlooked for XIII and Versus. Although he's on the roll for XIV.

The composer for XIII is Masashi Hamauzu and for Versus its Yoko Shimomura.

Shimomura is a genius.

That's a shame, good to see he'll be back for XIV though. XII's music just didn't feel the same, although he was involved very slightly.

Shimomura did all the Kingdom Heart stuff so i think she'll do a bang up job for a more action orientated Final Fantasy.

Do we have release dates for both XIII and Versus?

Cheers Elvis. I've never actually played a Final Fantasy game properly. My cousin was well into it though, and we used to live 2 mins away from each other when we were younger, so i'd watch him play quite often. Quite excited about these 2 titles.
