Anyone picking up the remastered FFXII for PS4?

Will be picking it up later and starting it tonight. From the little I remember form playing it back when it was released, I thought it was a great game with perhaps a slightly underwhelming main character. Never did manage to complete it, though.
I pre-ordered it on PSN so it's been on my HDD for a couple of days now. Looking forward to starting again. I've played it for countless hours since its release on PS2 but I've never played the international edition, this is the perfect excuse to try it out. And you can change the speed of the game to x2 or x4 at the press of a button, which is just great for level grinding. I've always loved the game so this was a no brainer for me. Never minded Vaan either, he's the point of view character but the story is really about Basch and Ashe, with Balthier more or less the leader of the group.

Picked up the collectors edition for FFXII. It's definitely not worth the money but I'm a FF fanatic so I just had to have it!

Looking forward to getting lost in that world again though, such an underrated FF. I love the gambit system.

Definitely is. To be fair I judged it a bit harshly initially but you appreciate it much more on a second play through.

I honestly can't remember anything about XII, and that's after playing all of them since...IV? Maybe I was heavily medicated at the time...I'd have to check the dates...

Waiting for the inevitable PC version. Was never a big fan of XII (or anything after IX really), but I will replay it.

Not sure how I feel about the job system in this one. I've been screwed a few times early on because I have no healer. The speed boost is handy though.

You can't argue the job-system is shit if you don't put your mind to use when picking jobs...
(Not that you've done that, just trying to be witty)

Besides, most jobs have some sort of healing, and you can put the gambit system to get auto-healing through potions at the absolute worst. Maybe reroll into some proper jobs? :D

I didn't play the job version before but in the early FFs I know the standard was black Mage, white mage, archer, warrior etc.

I wanted this playthrough to be the one where I do everything so looked up what was the best way to go. Penelo and Ashe are the mages of the group and it's a while before both of them are actually in your party. Until then you are stuck with Baltheir's first aid and Fran's really shitty cure which isn't great when you heal quite often in this game. I've just gotten Ashe and it's become so much easier now.

...What guide did you watch?
Not gonna claim to be a pro, but this sounds just wrong.

How far into the game are you? If you aren't that far you should consider just restarting.

You get 2 jobs per character, so which you pick first is up to you, you should have picked one with healing in it (not necessarily a white mage) early on if you aren't comfortable without a dedicated healer. But as I mentioned, with gambits you can set up a potion-healer for now if you don't want to restart.

I've gone with Balthier as my main healer due to getting him early, picked white mage as his first job and due to increasing max hp for the healer picked machinist later into the game so he can deal standard damage with the gun (and having more ranged atk for mid-game flyers)

I just googled it and looked at a link on the first page. Also there is no need to restart as I've got my full party now and it's balanced. I could and probably should have picked fran as a mage seeing as she is pretty shit at everything and I'd hardly use her for most of the game.

Alright. ^^,
Since you now have the full party you shouldn't have a issue.

I use Fran as my Time battlemage & Foebreaker. She deals decent damage & has buffs & debuff functions. Not sure if that's the best setup for her, but I've used her actively when I haven't had the need for a archer in my team (mind I don't go for any overpowered weapons early on).

Why would her cure be really shitty? It's a good enough spell for the early stages of the game. Of course it becomes a lot better if your designated healer has a job with easy access to Magick Lore licences to increase its healing power, such as White Mage.

Regarding jobs, whatever you do, avoid having the same job twice in your party or giving two jobs with similar strengths to the same character. If a character already has loads of Battle Lore from his first job, it would be a waste to pick a second job with a lot of Battle Lore later on. It's better to pick a second job to bolster a weakness in another area, such as Swiftness. There are 6 characters with (eventually) 2 jobs each and there are 12 different jobs in total, so use all of them to get the full experience.

I'm loving this, it was such a good game the first time around and this is the definitive version without a doubt. Building a level 4 battle chain has never been easier with the 4x speed boost. It's one of those game where getting the platinum trophy comes naturally just because you want to play it that much.

I made Fran an Archer so Magick Lores are rare and towards the edges of the board. By the time you get to the dreadnaught, which to be fair is the last time I had to rely on her, it is pretty weak.

Also I'm going to end up with two characters picking the same job due to the genji armour license only being on three boards.

The speed up thing is great. I was sitting playing one handed while chaining up loot.

Especially, when you've played it before. Just speed it up and let the gambits do the work for you.

I've just reached King Bomb (Salikawoods) and I've flown through.

God bless that speed up thing, makes grinding loot for bazaar items a hell of a lot easier. Currently farming for the Tournesol sword after a bloody tense battle against Ultima.

Also if you haven't tried the trial mode do it. It uses your current save and allows you to farm LP and steal some decent equipment to then use in the main game.

Finally got back to playing FFXII again. Only about 5/6 hours in but can't help feel it's one of the more underrated FF titles. Vaan might be a bit of a sap but Basch and Balthier are cool as feck.

I do like the speed up thing, but I can't get myself to turn it off anymore and it's very immersion breaking.

Yeah I've found myself using it a bit too often. Trying to break the habit of using it but when you've got a long corridor to run down it's so much easier

I just don't like X that much. Also, to give you all those grinding side missions near the end just isn't a good idea and no way I am going to do them. Hoping that I won we underlevel for the endgame.

Seeing the FF15 thread bumped reminded me that I've never played FF9. I take it it's worth it then?

Absolutely. It’s my third favourite in the series and seems to be almost everyone else’s favourite.

Oh awesome. I've played 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 and 13 so no idea why I skipped 9. Stuck at home with the flu so that's my weekend sorted.

9 & 6 are my fave - I've always struggled to pick between em for the last 15 years or so  I voted 6 in the poll, but honestly, I'd probably swap it to 9 now (and tomorrow I'd probably pick 6 again). It has more charm than every other 3D FF game combined. It's absolutely brilliant.

One of my all-time gaming goals is the 12 hour run. Pain in the arse, but...

FF9 is great. It's been a long time since I played, but I remember it being fantastic and a huge return to form after 8 was a bit shit. I'd buy it again if it was out on Xbox.

Considered to be the best FF by quite a few. Not sure I agree, but it's definitely a must play if you're a fan.

Seeing this thread bumped reminded me that I still don't have a FFVII remake. What gives?

Firstly they dumped their in-house engine to switch to Unreal shortly after starting development, then they dumped Cyber Connect and all the work they had done to completely build in house at Square, causing another restart last April. Well not a complete restart but a lot of work was binned due to being deemed poor. Game is still a long way away.
