100% agree. VIII rules. And I honestly don’t see Squall as ‘Emo’ ...deeply introverted and aloof- yes; autistic by today’s standards- probably; but he’s an ice cold soldier at the start of the game only interested in the mission and keeping himself separate from people. It changes slowly from disc 2 onwards and that’s his character arc. Other than Cloud there isn’t another main character that dominates the plot as much as Squall.

Also the final boss music ‘The Extreme’ Is just

8's soundtrack is incredible. Premonition is another great one.

The final boss battle(s) and the accompanying music that goes with it is near perfect.

Really, all the Uematsu soundtracks are memorable. Even X, which I don't rate so much as a game, has some truly beautiful moments in its OST.

 Still the best piano collection piece, though!

Everyone will have a favourite Uematsu soundtrack but seriously, FFVI should be at least everyone's second favourite. Consistent brilliance from start to finish.

Best boss theme, best final boss theme, some of the best character themes (Celes ). I fully agree.

Time for a fan-classic.

How is the new (ish) Dissidia game on PS4 anyway? I remember being quite hyped about it because I loved the ones on PSP but then I didn't really hear much about it.

I’ve honestly had so many hours of enjoyment out of it, bit it’s been torn to shreds by a lot of fans and reviewers for some (admittedly) terrible design problems and poor developer choices. Sadly so many people have given up on the game but it could become a free to play game soon like it is in Japan which could boost its popularity. It is a unique game though but it really isn’t for everyone.

The 3 vs 3 player things is it’s best and worst feature. Communication is vital if you want to win games, and working with random strangers and perfecting your main character is a great feeling when it all goes well. Not so good if teammates become sarcastic or mean.

Best world map theme!

Terra's them is fantastic, and its orchestrated version is the best thing in the universe.

Whom do people consider the main character in FFVI? Technically there is no main character, but Terra, Celes and Locke are the three main important. Terra in the World of Balance is definitely the main character, but then you can play the entire World of Ruin without even recruiting her, and Celes is the main character there.

A very interesting choice from Square to make a game without the main character. Pretty unique in all the games I have played.

It's brilliant, but it's a really contested category. A toss up between VI & VII for me.

I grew up on FF music :D When other folks got their first MP3 players & packed it with rock & rap, I had OST's for days. FF Shrine before all the music links were taken down

It's hard to say, I often think of Locke as the more traditional protagonist of that game, but it isn't clear cut. Some would say Terra (for a large part of the game) but to me she feels more like the Aerith of FFVI. In any case these two + Celes are the main ones, as you said. The supporting cast have pretty strong story lines as well.

Terra's theme is my favourite in all of FF but there's so many other fantastic theme's in FFVI. This one when you get the airship in World of Ruin:

And then there's Locke's theme, Celes, Phantom Forest, The Decisive Battle (excellent boss theme), Forever Rachel and obviously the entire Aria and Dancing Mad. These last two are especially brilliant if you find good orchestral versions. The Aria can be hit and miss due to the singers, but with the right singer Celes' theme returning later on is goose bumps everywhere.

Feck now I want to play it again.

Don't forget The Fierce Battle/Atma theme :D

Orchestral version.

6 has the best world map theme and the best villain (Sep is a close second). I’m currently playing FF4 again to see if it’s as good as I remember.

Unpopular opinion this but the way the party is structured in 6 is probably my only gripe with the game. Every character has their own backstory and moment to shine but in terms of party cohesion there’s very few times when the group is all together and the world of ruin could have been done better.

4 is still great, but just fails to make my top three (9/6/7).

Funny you should mention Kefka & Sephiroth... Are they the last great Final Fantasy villains? Ultimecia just kinda pops up out of nowhere on Disc 4 (okay there's some foreshadowing, but she's still a trash character), Kuja's redemption arc kinda rules him out & Necron is just... What? Sin is just a floating kebab.

To be fair, FFVI is considered by many as the best RPG game ever, despite that the World of Ruin is not awesome. The World of Balance though, is by far the best thing in video gaming, if the World of Ruin would have been as good, then the game would have been universally accepted as the best RPG game ever.

I think that the discussion between best FF game is between FFVI, FFVII and Chrono Trigger (with IX and IV after them), and there isn't a wrong answer. FFVII is probably the most popular, but gaming veterans typically opt either for FFVI or Chrono Trigger. CT is possibly the best but the final boss fight is terrible, FFVI goes from perfection in first half fo 'just' great in the second, while FFVII is the most consistent one as it is awesome from beginning to an end without doing anything wrong. It is also my favourite.

Yep, VIII, IX and X have weak villains. Sin and Ultimecia are terrifying but in first case uninteresting, while in the second she comes late in the game. About IX, I have no idea what they were thinking. Kuja is kind of okay though being a mix of Kefka and Sephiroth, but the final battle is some entity no one knows what the feck is, and why was there.

Aye, that's about the only thing I could say against IX, Kuja could have been so much more. Thankfully the rest of the story was so strong to make up for it. Vivi's story alone is better than most games, and I adored Steiner's stuff, though I know many didn't like him/it.

Ultimecia was a pile of bollix.

I agree with everything you two have just said, which leads me to another question :D

Zidane & Garnet is the best Final Fantasy love story, with Locke/Celes pushing them close. Cecil/Rosa is solid, but they're more background music in the grand scheme of things, & similar can be said of FF7's multiple relationships. Squall/Rinoa & Tidus/Yuna don't deserve mentioning.

So, all things considered, VI & IX are the only two games to have great love stories... Confirm/deny?

Hmm that's a shame, I expected a lot more from it but maybe I'll give it a shot someday.

Cloud and Aerith is good too. To be fair, Tidus and Yuna story is not bad, for me it was the most redeeming thing in otherwise a pretty mediocre game.

The ending scene is a masterpiece, but I cringed too many times up to that point

To my shame, being such a massive FF fan, I've still not yet played anything before VI. I've had a box containing IV and V lying about for ages but never actually played them. I still have a working PS2 so I could give them a go.

IV, V and VI are SNES games.

I actually have yet to play V myself.

Yeah, the thing when they do the final hug is one of the most memorable thing in the games. Right there with Opera Scene in IV, Aerith's moment in VII and Dagger losing her voice in IX.

FF Anthology was a PS1 release in the EU that was FF4 & FF5. Anthology in the US was FF5 & FF6 if I remember right. FF6 was also a standalone PS1 release in the EU.

Opera moment is VI, but yeah. FF9 ending is still the best, though

Yup, that's the one I have, just found the box again. It says it includes some exclusive cinematics as well. Same as FFVI PS1 version I guess. I never owned an SNES so even my FFVI playthroughs have all been the PS1 version.

I haven't played that game. Haven't heard good things about FFVII milking (I mean spin off) games.
Advent Children (animated movie) is quite decent.
Crisis Core is very good in my opinion, and the only reason I have a psp.
Dirge of Cerebrus is shit. Last order (also animated) is just unneeded.

I bought Super Famicom copies of 4/5/6 years back, but sold them :(

The cinematics don't really add much, and the PS1 loading times are notoriously long, but still, it's FF6, what's not to love? :D

(Psst, just download Snes9x & some ROMs. It's the best experience you can get).
