I just don't like X that much. Also, to give you all those grinding side missions near the end just isn't a good idea and no way I am going to do them. Hoping that I won we underlevel for the endgame.

X is great. My favorite close to 7.

What's not to like? Blitzball, flying engine, not dying love interest, cool graphics for it's time, and blitzball

Getting the platinum for X was a nightmare (lightning dodge ) . Great game but not quite my favourite in the series. I definitely think the linearity of X was done really well whereas in 13 it was excruciatingly dull.

The dark aeons too, god damn.

Anyone who really enjoys FF9/FF6 needs to try the Trails in the Sky games.

So far ahead of any of the mainline games Square have released since the PS1 for me.

X-2 is better than X. Come at me :D

The battle system is actually quite fun but the story :nono:

Story/characters in X are pretty naff. X-2 gets a pass because it's all one big joke, so the characters being naff make little difference. X has none of the charm that makes previous titles so great.

X has a better OST, though. X's OST is all-time great material. And the graphics for the time  And the gameplay is great in both games.

So god damn slow to get going though. I assume it gets much, much better after a few hours?

I didn't find it a slow starter personally, but yeah, it definitely gets "bigger" the further in you go. SC is such a stunning game from start to finish.

I was almost baffled by how much fun X-2's dressphere system was.

Then again, I always like job systems and their variations.

Fanservice outfits & a good battle system? Every weirdos dream

I'll have to give it a crack again sometime, I might be mis-remembering it, or I could have been distracted by something after starting it(happens way to often).

Shame it's not on the Switch, generally prefer playing games on consoles to my laptop.

Absolutely! :D

I think the last thing I had to do was master the sphere grid with all characters. Did Tidus, Wakka and Auron but couldn't be bothered with the rest.

Started "The Lost Odyssey". Unsurprisingly looks like a modern Final Fantasy. @Earthquake , I think you recommended it a very long time ago, mentioning it as a great "Final Fantasy" game.

Btw, just beat the second boss. What a cnut he was. Were they mad to put such a strong boss at the beginning of the game?!

Heard absolutely fantastic stuff about it. I really, really want to play it. But I need to wait for some sort of emulator or pc-port... Anyone know of one by chance?

I don't think that there are working emulators for Xbox 360, and there is no port for it.

However, an old Xbox 360 would cost 50 euro, and the game costs less than 10 euro. So combined, it is as much as a new game.

Heard the game runs slow (battles especially) on the xbox, so was hoping a emulator with speed-up button would solve that.
And I'm not overly interested in getting a console for one game, not because of the price but because of the space it will take.

I worry about the FF7 remake. It's one of my favourite games of all time. The first game I remember getting really absorbed into. It has its flaws much like any game but to me it's still a masterpiece.

Everything they've done so far regards the remake tells me they're struggling with it.

It's stupid. They're too busy trying to reinvent the wheel with it.

Just release the same game with 2019 graphics & a re-recorded OST. Bam. That simple. You don't need to change the gameplay. Add voice acting if you want, but make it optional.

Seeing the FF15 thread bumped reminded me that I've never played FF9. I take it it's worth it then?
Not just one of my favourite Final Fantasys but one of my all-time favourite games full stop. It's brilliant. And the soundtrack is still stuck in my head to the point where I'll go around whistling the main theme occasionally even though I haven't played it for ages.

For me it's more of a Final Fantasy than any of the wank Square have churned out in a good while.

They don't mess around when it comes to the bosses, some can be a real shock.

As an aside, if you see it handy, Blue Dragon might be worth picking up for the 360 as well, I didn't play as much of it as Lost Odyssey, but I remember enjoying it for a classic turn based rpg. Stylistically more like Dragon Quest/Dragonball.

It came as a shock to me. It is within the first three hours of the game, in a game when you really struggle to do grinding. Being a kind of veteran in FF games, I had troubles with it (bosses in FF, bar optional ones are quite easy). I managed to defeat it in the second try, but it was more luck than anything else. I had just 17HP with Seth when it happened (the other two characters were dead), and I did everything as good as it can be done.

It is doable, but I can understand why people bitched about it. Essentially you need to do everything right (flare the shit out of him in every move), and hope that the random number generator works in your favour.

Yeah I remember one of the early bosses being one of the hardest in the entire story quest, relative to your strength. It was a wonderfully traditional JRPG at a time these looked like a dying breed. It was never going to convince any non-JRPG fans, but for us fans of the genre it was excellent. I liked its ring system where you had to time a trigger pull or something, it reminded my of the gunblades of FFVIII and made battles a little more involving. I also remember the English voice acting being a bit meh, I think I switched to the original Japanese voices early on.

I really loved the animated short stories. I always took the time to read them, they were some of the highlights of the game for me.

Definitely. I instantly disliked Kaim with his emo personality that would have looked cool in nineties Japan (and who reminded me of Squall Lionheart, which happens to be my least liked protagonist in any FF game I have played), but after having read three or four of his 'dreams', I started changing my mind on him, and realized that they might give him a deeper personality than the generic introvert emo.

I vaguely remember there being a few in FF4 that would absolutely muller you if you weren't prepared for them or overlevelled.

Maybe one or two in 7 as well, I remember having fits with the Materia Keeper in Mt. Nibel on my first attempt at playing through it as a kid. Though at the time I'd completely missed Gongaga so didn't have Titan, Deathblow, etc. Funny that you can just drive by that town, story section and just walk into Cosmo Canyon and continue the story.

fecking worm annihilated the shit out of me yesterday night. 3 attempts, 3 failures.

Literally. The game was amazing as it was. There’s no need to change anything besides giving it a fresh coat of paint.

Hardest enemy in the entire game for me, just make sure you also take out his helpers all the time.

This is the Final Fantasy thread!
And that game is more Final Fantasy, than any Final Fantasy since FFX (or maybe XII depending on whom you ask). When SquareEnix pushed out Sakaguchi and Uematsu, the founded a new company (with many Square employers) and made this game (then they went into phone market for gaming for whatever reason). It has the same setting and mechanics as FF games, just that of course they couldn't use the name for obvious reasons.

People also have discussed Chrono Trigger (another Final Fantasy game) at depth here. So, Elvis, feck off!

Also, not the first time Lost Odyssey itself was discussed here.

There are also references to FF, like the pirate captain Sed*cough*, and DQ in the way you can find metal Kelolons that are hard to beat but give loads of exp, etc, like DQ's slimes.

YS VIII is fantastic, seeing as we're talking about other good JRPG's.

100% agree. VIII rules. And I honestly don’t see Squall as ‘Emo’ ...deeply introverted and aloof- yes; autistic by today’s standards- probably; but he’s an ice cold soldier at the start of the game only interested in the mission and keeping himself separate from people. It changes slowly from disc 2 onwards and that’s his character arc. Other than Cloud there isn’t another main character that dominates the plot as much as Squall.

Also the final boss music ‘The Extreme’ Is just

Eh, no mate, Ys VIII, not FF VIII

Doesn't matter whether it's more final fantasy or not, it's not final fantasy!

Any chances that we might see a sequel to lost Odyssey one of these days?
