Isn't Jenova doing a Sephiroth personification back then, too? I am pretty sure that his body is all the time in that crater in the north. All the other times it is Jenova controlled from him, while also taking his form.

In flashback yes, but it is just a flashback.
You are at the crater in the north when you hand over the black materia, when Sephiroth is in that kind of lifestream/mako cocoon.

Not quite the bit you're thinking of

This is the only time we see the real Sephiroth not in a flashback or mutated by Jenova cells I think, the one Cloud injured in Nibelheim

@Earthquake @Ixion

I thought that you were talking for:

That time when Cloud gives some materia to 'Sephiroth' and attack Aerith (after Cloud is controlled from Sephiroth), which makes Aerith leave the party. Isn't that in the Temple of the Ancients (not in the crater)?

Yes but he hands over the Materia twice, once at the Temple to Jenova and again at the crater to the real Sephiroth who we briefly see in that cutscene.

While we're talking VII I rewatched Advent Children Complete yesterday (after finishing the PSN remaster of VII). The Complete version makes a lot more sense and is a better film than the original, it also reminded me of Crisis Core and Zack who is awesome and one of the best protagonists in FF. I'm actually excited about the VII Remake because of how much Zack was expanded upon since and they'll be able to incorporate that into a remake.

Yeah, that's at the temple at the end of disc one, but you recover the Black Materia from Jenova in the Whirlwind Maze.

Has anyone ever been more spot on about anything than that? :) Was thinking not long ago that the decline in turn-based combat and the ATB was basically just something that game journalists had decided was the case, but Sterling puts it far more eloquently than I could've hoped to.

I went for 7 in the poll, for what it's worth. You could make a really good case for a few of them but, for me, FF7 is possibly the greatest example of what has been done in terms of the combination of video game storytelling and musical composition. There's a formula and a balance that Sakaguchi struck with the FF series that allowed for a unique level of immersion and emotion, and FF7 was the epitome of that in my opinion.

Holy shit! Welcome back, matey!

Hey Revan, how's it going? Delighted about FF7 being cut up into little parts like I am? ;)

I basically had some sort of episode when I read that for the first time. I was sat in the flat reading the story on my phone, and from what I remember I basically went:

"Oh my god ......they've.........Oh my god!! I can't bel........I can't.....they've............I cannot believe this...."

That sort of thing went on for a few minutes. I thought there'd be more outrage on here actually, though I suppose it's Square Enix we're talking about and something like this was bound to happen.

Hi Eric, I am fine thanks. What about you? (if I am not mistaken you weren't here for around 2 years.

Yeah, delighted. Near as much as when I heard that they are making the game. On other words, if I had a reason to buy a Playstation, now I don't.

Anyway, it is very likely that the remake won't be near as good as the original, so I guess that I will just replay the timeless classic instead of playing the new episodic action RPG game. When is the last time that Square(Enix) made a good game anyway (created, not published)?

Very good video, definitely agree.

Great to see ya about too, mate!

I couldn't get outraged about it as I was basically just waiting for Square to announce how they intended to gleefully feck it up. First there was the change to the battle system then the episodic announcement and they had achieved maximum Square Enix.

Oh no, oh no no no...... They can Square Enix more...

They're talking about adding new story, which could be good but is more likely to be Square as feck.

Also, I fear some kind of 5€ Aeris Lives DLC.....

It is amazing, isn't it? For a company that apparently is 'dying', they are doing their best to make the death process faster. I mean, with this game being an ace in their hands and having potential to remove their troubles, they are doing the exact opposite thing that the fans wanted.

But surely changing the battle system and making it episodic is enough Square Enixing that most right minded people will be put off and thus further SEing will be rendered pointless.

I gave up on them then they somehow thought the cast of FF13(especially Snow!) was a good idea.

:lol::lol::lol: That would be great!

As excited as I was for the game, I think that chances are very high that I will avoid it.
I'll buy every single one of the 17 episodes it comes in and play them all.

There's a good chance it'll be like the Final Fantasy version of cutting myself over and over again..... sigh...

I've learned that with them, it's never enough. Feck, they might try and find a way of wedging Lightning in....

Good thanks. Yeah, I was spending far too much time on here! I'll see how it goes this time round but I'll probably end up asking for another ban at some point. :D

Yeah, it's got a lot to live up to. There are so many ways that it could've gone wrong during development, but if they keep going like this they'll remove the soul of the original before it even gets to that point.

With regards to the question, I don't know really. The second attempt at 14 maybe? They've done a really good job at trying to dismantle all of their most beloved IPs, to be honest. They had possibly the 2 greatest RPG series of all time and an excellent ARPG series in Kingdom Hearts, but for some reason they decided it was a good idea to mess around with all of them. I think maybe the heads of Square Enix are a bunch of psychopaths masquerading as incompetents.

Very good video, definitely agree.

Cheers Earthquake, you too. :) Seem to remember that you were a staunch turn-baser, actually - did you ever get round to Radiant Historia? I was going to say up there that I thought FF7 had the best battle music of any game I've played, but Radiant Historia and FF8 are up there too.

This one's great:

That bit at 30 seconds is amazing. It's like the universe will explode if you lose.

I have it somewhere, I played a bit of it, but picked it up at the same time as like 5 other games, and played a bit of them and got lost on something(it's a terrible habit I have). I need to dig it out, I certainly remember the grid system combat being very interesting.

Yeah, it's a nice take on turn based combat. To be honest, the whole thing is pretty unique - I've not really seen anything like it. It's pretty much the definition of linearity, though at the same time that linearity is one of its charms, and makes for some pretty high level video game storytelling.

Not like the corridor, corridor, corridor, corridor, field, corridor, corridor, corridor stuff going on in FF13. ;)

Aye, what I saw of the story was excellent. Pretty heavy right off he bat too, IIRC.

Yep, it gets good very quickly. On top of that, it has a good protagonist, nicely fleshed out dialogue and a great soundtrack. The final battle really is one of those ones where you stretch it out just because the music is that epic.

On that note, I was listening to The Extreme not long ago on Youtube, and there were people in the comments section debating about what part of the track they'd try and time a Lionheart to against Ultimecia. Made me smile. :)

What gets me is that everything about the FF7 remake so far has seemed like not just an obvious, but also a calculated two fingers up at the fans of the original. The way this all started with Shinji Hashimoto coming on stage with the upscaled FF7 original and laughing at the fanbase, the masterpiece of a trailer at E3 that sent everyone into a frenzy, then the cold-hearted shattering of everyone's hopes shortly after. Like Art says, it's been impressively Square Enix.

Good to see you back @KingEric7

After all this time, you're still 4th in the posting rankings for this thread. Impressive!

Cheers Redmist. :)

I think I have issues, to be honest. I have a neighbour living upstairs who is well into gaming and online RPGs, and every other time I see him I end up subconsciously bending the conversation towards Square Enix. Probably best to keep it to here before I lose the plot altogether.

I get that we aren't the fanbase they want any more, they seem to be aiming at emo teens(still) and are more concerned with creating characters they can market than actual games. I don't get why they are actively taking the piss out of the people that actually want the FF7 remake. Even the massive feck ups over at Capcom knew not to mess with the ports of Resident Evil Remake and 0. I found this video quite interesting and made me very worried for Deus Ex Mankind Divided:

The clue's in the title: 'Divided'. :D

I feel like there's been a bit of a shilling presence with all of this, to be honest. It's obviously in any company's best interest or organisation to try and affect perceptions through the internet, and it's certainly felt at times as if this has been happening.

I've seen a website seriously suggesting the twist that Aeris should not die...

Just think how much that would completely change the plot! You'd have to basically rewrite all the stuff about holy and the white materia, and in doing so you'd get rid of the last great revelation in the game's storyline.

God... I feel worried even writing it. What if it gives someone ideas?

Doesn't really matter when the original exists. Not really liking the look of the remake, as it seems too much like a reimagining and too little like a true to the original remake.

Anyway, Final Fantasy IX should be hitting PC today. Leaves VII for dust

IX is so good. Although Vivi's sub plot about mortality and the point of life is a little depressing. Although really cool I might add. Didn't appreciate it as a kid.

I'm tempted to get FF9, but I never finish games on my laptop. Unless they are Football Manager I just can't be arsed. I loved Pillars of Eternity but I'll never finish that either. Wish they would release the damn things on XB1.

I just popped out my gamboy/ds box, and dug it out, next few evenings are well set.

I need to catalogue all the games in it, Nintendo handhelds were, and are a ridiculous haven for classic RPGs. FF, DQ, Chrono, Pokemon, GS....

You'd basically have to rewrite the entire second half of the game, or in modern Squenix parlance, the last 8 games of the story.

They could bring her back and let the story carry on the way it always did, but add all the changes into a codex you have to read to understand what's actually going on like in FF13. That would be proper Squenix.

Also, costume changes. Tifa in various armours. You know it's going to happen. Actually have they shown her yet? I don't recall seeing her.

Nice one. :D It's probably the closest thing I ever got to having that FF experience outside of an FF. It's close between that and Dragon Quest 8, at least.

Never got round to playing Lost Odyssey for some mind-bending reason. I think you might have said that that game literally was like an FF, if I remember rightly.

Yep. The way it's going it may actually end up being something like that, seeing as though a lot of people are predicting that Midgar alone will take up the entire first installment. If that's what people expect then Square Enix will be all too happy to deliver.

What a rubbish situation it is whereby I'm not even sure if I want the game to succeed or not. How has this happened? It's the FF7 remake!

Very much so, ffs, it even has a ship captain named *cough* "Sed" *cough*..... It's a really cracking game, lot of reading for backstory, which is some of the best parts, but can be avoided if you want a faster pace. Very Final Fantasy, some of the monsters have a bit of a DQ vibe though.

The combat is very good, proper classic turn based, but with some timing tactics. Spells that take multiple turns, and can be slowed by attacking the caster. The weapons are like an expanded version of Squall's gunblade, which is interesting.

Music is up there too, but you expect it with Uematsu.

Tbh, counting it amongst FF games, it's easily the best since 9.

They haven't mentioned it, IIRC, but I'd be certain there's no world map either.

I see a lot of gamers who hate world maps anyway, calling them archaic and shite, that they wouldn't look right in a new game. Thought the one in Ni No Kuni was spectacular, though, something like that would be delightful.

Missed out there by the sounds of it! I did actually go through the soundtrack once a couple of years ago funnily enough, and I think back when I was about 17 I used to listen to both the Prologue and this on my phone:

Nice.

Sometimes I'll listen to Uematsu's battle themes and I'll just end up laughing, to be honest. The first two from FF7 (normal and boss) in particular I just find so imaginative, though for sheer feeling it might be Jenova's theme that hits the hardest.

Another one I should've played going by the reviews. Hisaishi is great, too; was listening to 'The Rain' not long ago actually which apparently appears on Classic FM these days.

As for the world map, yeah probably not. If they were concerned about how turn based Cloud would have worked with PS4 graphics, they're probably completely terrified of a world map. :D
