The F1 Thread 2014 Season

Yep, nothing will change with the engine noise now. People can bitch and moan about it, but to much money has been spent on them to change them at the drop of a hat

Maybe it is a quick and simple swap job?

Just had a quick skim through the thread on PF-1 and I think it may be adjustable from the pit wall, so Red Bull were warned to make an adjustment but their argument is that they never actually went over the permitted fuel rate, it was just a faulty reading.

It's something that changes throughout the race - the 100kg/hr bit is the top limit you can reach, if you actually went at that rate throughout the whole race you'd run out of fuel about two-thirds in. A few teams had had warnings about going above that limit - they adjusted their flow rate to oblige. Red Bull, thinking they knew better, didn't.

10 other teams made it work, 3 of them powered by the same Renault engine. They switched the flow meter out after FP because of the reading and then decided to put the original fault one back in for the race, why?

Perhaps it was a faulty reading, perhaps an honest mistake but it's Red Bull so feck them.

From what I've read they were instructed to.

They were getting inconsistent readings from the meter so swapped it out, and then the replacement one was faulty so they were instructed to put the original one back in and apply an offset to it in order to comply.

They did so but also tracked the flow rate using a proprietary (unapproved) meter of their own, which is what they claim shows that they never went above the allowed rate. They claim that the offset the FIA instructed them to use was causing an ineffective fuel flow, which is why they didn't feel they should make any adjustment during the race.

Their argument now is that the offset and the dodgy meter have lead to incorrect readings being used by the FIA to come to the conclusion that they breeched the limits.

At least that's what I've garnered from a quick read.

Please someone relieve me of my ignorance-is there actually some sort of debate in F1 right now where people are angry that the car-go-vroom noise isn't vroomy enough anymore? Are adults talking about this?

It is a massive talking point at the moment for some, most don't like the sound, personally I dont mind it.
Organisers of the Australian GP are threatening legal action over it.

Is nice sound what you're laying money down for at the fast car race? Are these people meaning to go to a symphony and ending up at a race by accident?

It's part of the general atmosphere really, it's a direct association to the idea that these cars are the peak of automotive engineering, powered by rocket fuel and unicorn tears. They were designed to be quieter though, they're going for efficiency and less sound means less energy being wasted. We'll get used to it. Hearing tyre screeches is still weird though, not sure I'll get used to that.

So 'no'.

The engine sound is a HUGE part of what makes attending a GP an incredible experience, it truly is an amaazing sound and I have no trouble understanding why those who were at the race on Sunday were disappointed with it.

They also sounded shit on TV.

No, it's not world ending news, yes it's first world problems, etc etc, but that doesn't mean it's a stupid thing to be bothered about.

You could hear the crowd announcer too, that was weird.

There's hardly need for ear plugs anymore is there? That must be so strange for any regular race goers. I've only been to two races but the noise was such a big part of what made it spectacular

Yea Brundle mentioned that on twitter yesterday, said he didn't need them at all.

I didn't bother with them myself but probably would do if going regularly and getting as close as he does. Or at least until this season.

I really don't mind the sound of modern F1. I actually think it sounds better if anything, with all the whistles, gurgles and grunts that we never had in the v8 era. The debate over volume is silly.

The debate over volume is silly.

Agreed, people are missing the point that the cars need some skill to drive now due to having more power vs grip. I'd rather have that than screeching volume, which can be changed with exhausts in later years.

The old V8 engines were akin to vuvuzelas imo. Loud but uninteresting and lacking character. Once people get used to the V6's, it'll be fine.

It may not sound too different to tv viewers bar actually hearing the tyres screech but to people going to races i can imagine it takes from the experience as that would be one of the things most people go for.

It's not that different from a football match really, the noise adds to the experience.

Anyone who goes to a Formula One race to hear the cars needs a slap.
What do you go for then? For me it's the stuff that goes on before and after the race/qualifying, the actual racing experience is shit, your better off sitting at home if all you want to do is watch the race. The noise was probably the best thing about the experience but they have taken that away.

Yea, obviously noise makes no difference to the experience.

I bet you'd have no problem going to Old Trafford and having it as quiet as a library either.

What nonsense.

Yes, because the swell of a crowd responding to the actions on the pitch, encouraging the players and creating the atmosphere is exactly identical to the monotonous droning of a V8 as it flies past.

Maybe people just want fundementally different things from the races. I want a good, exciting race, with skill and bravery on display. I don't really care what the bloody cars sound like. If other people go to listen to the sound of an engine then fair enough, but I can't remotely empathise with that.

I went for the same reason you did - the stuff before and after the race / qualifying. The atmosphere of the place. It was great. But the noise, for me, didn't make or break that. Sure, if the cars were electric powered that might have been a bit of a damp squib, but these current engines are -- I'm sure -- still pretty loud, just not put-ear-plugs-in-or-lose-your-hearing loud.
