The F1 Thread 2012 Season

Adrian Newey received an OBE in the New Year's day honor list.

Can't think of a more deserving candidate. The most innovative designer since Colin Chapman.

Rory Byrne might have something to say about that. His cars were instrumental in all but 3 wins of Schumacher's career, and did that in a 13 year period and another 10 or so wins between other Ferrari drivers of the time.

Every car he designed for schumacher bar the 92-93 Bennetons and 2005 Ferrari, either won the title or took the title to the last round.

Picked up the season review DVD today, apparently there are never before seen camera angles on it and over 5 and a half hours of footage, that should keep me going for a bit

Hmmm Byrne had both Schumacher & Brawn to help him at both Benneton & Ferrari. It was the same team around him.

Newey has just gone from team to team without relying on the same guys around him and has designed championship winning cars, he's someone that can make the difference by himself.

Look at the teams that Newey has worked for. None of them have ever been short of financial or personal support. Newey has had his fair share of failures as well. He has a consistent pattern throughout his career of several great cars, followed by some distinctively average ones. 02, 04, 06 McLarens weren't that crash hot, and the 05 one were massively unreliable. He also completely scrapped his 03 design. No doubt he's great mind and probably the best alongside Byrne, but his strike rate doesn't give him the edge.

I think if Byrne had continued on, he'd have a couple more world titles to add to his name. I'm surprised Brawn and Schumacher haven't asked him to come out of retirement one last time to give it one last shot.

I'd also love to see Valencia go, thats one place you are guranteed a shit sunday of racing.

Bahrain Grand Prix already in doubt.

F1 teams urged to boycott Bahrain Grand Prix - Sport - ArabianBusiness.com.

this is a bit from it.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said in November he would press ahead with plans to return the race to Bahrain and did not believe the Grand Prix would become a focal point for protesters.

Ecclestone is a fool if he believes that , if the race goes ahead and there is still unrest , of course that are going to target the race

my mate just started doing F1 w/sky and i'm going up to montreal to meet up with him. good GP or shit like valencia?

One of the best on the calendar in terms of action, one of my favorites.

thanks - i stopped following it in a big way after senna's sacrifice , which is what it was in truth. my friend made me go see "senna" which was hard to watch knowing what the ultimate out come would be , but i guess i'm back in at least for one race.
oh by the way for the younger folks on here he would mop the floor with all comers today and furthermore the cars of today are ugly compared to the 80's and 90's. just check pique's williams and senna old lotus. and one false move and they'd (the car) would try and kill you.

A mate of mine went to the Canadian GP for something like 5 years on the run, he absolutely loved it, says it's amazing.

Canadian GP is in my top 3 of race to go to ,Monaco and Silverstone being the other 2.

can't wait now - you've all got me gee'd up for it. we got a nice hotel - 1 tube stop from the track. he should be able to cop us some free shit - tickets etc for a drunken night if he's not on sky's tit. then it's all on them.

Just tweeted by Andrew Benson from the BBC F1 team

"Contacts in Italy confirming news that Robert Kubica has broken his leg, setting back his recovery yet further"

BBC Sport - Robert Kubica breaks right leg in accident

Robert Kubica has suffered another setback in his attempt to return to Formula 1 after breaking his right leg in an accident at his house in Italy.

It is the same leg he broke in a high-speed rally crash almost a year ago.

The Pole needs an operation to have a metal screw inserted just above his ankle and then faces a month in plaster.

He is said to have lost his footing in the garden of his house in Pietrasanta, near the coastal town of Viareggio.

Kubica missed the whole of the 2011 season following a crash during the first stage of the Ronde di Andora rally in February.

The 27-year-old was driving a Super 2000-specification Skoda Fabia when his car left the road at high speed and hit a crash barrier, which pierced the car and caused Kubica's injuries.

Having been cut out of the vehicle before being airlifted to hospital, the Pole underwent several operations to repair the damage to his partially severed right forearm and numerous fractures to his right elbow, shoulder and leg.

He is now out of contract with his former team Renault, who have changed their name to Lotus this season, after it was announced last November that he would not be ready to return by the start of the season.

Kubica is still hoping to make a comeback to F1 but it remains unclear when - or if - he will have sufficient mobility and feeling in his right hand to drive a grand prix car.

Lotus have said that they would like to help him return, but they have already signed former world champion Kimi Raikkonen and novice Romain Grosjean for the 2012 season, and they have admitted their relationship with Kubica was at "point zero".

Kubica, who was one of the most highly rated drivers in F1 before his accident, has also been linked with Ferrari.

Team boss Stefano Domenicali was asked on Wednesday, before Kubica's latest injury became public, about the prospects of him joining Fernando Alonso at the Italian team in 2013.

Domenicali said: "Robert is a great driver, but he had very severe injuries and he is still working to get back to normal living. We need to wait to see. That kind of injury takes a long time to recover from."

After this latests injury , is there any chance of Kubica having a seat this season , even before the new injury , I had my doubts.
It will be 2013 before we see him in an F1 car , the question is will he be the same driver he was.

I'd be surprised if he races in F1 again. Two years out with a serious injury is not exactly fantastic for a career.

Oh dear.

Lewis Hamilton could be called as a key witness in the Adrian Sutil assault trial, according to reports.

Sutil, who lost his seat with Force India last month, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm after an alleged clash with Lotus-Renault co-owner Eric Lux in a Shanghai nightclub last April following the Chinese GP.

Sutil has denying any wrongdoing, and his manager, Manfred Zimmermann, is adamant that his client will be found not guilty.

"We are convinced that the court will come to the conclusion that there was no intentional attack," he told The Daily Telegraph. "We feel good. So the truth will come out."

However, in the wake of proceedings opening in Munich on Thursday, the newspaper reports 'it is believed the charges pending against Sutil have ended any chance he had of taking the one available seat at Williams.'

The Daily Mail, meanwhile, claims that 'Hamilton, a close friend of Sutil who was present at the time, could be called as a witness.' If so, he is likely to appear before the court in late January.

Well it's not all great news, Virgin has just confirmed to me that the channel is not available in HD. Better then nothing I guess.

Really is a big shame Williams with a great history have little money. Bringing these drivers every year for just sponsorship money. Maldonado and Senna are just not good enough.

Bruno Senna & Maldonado in a Williams. I don't want to live in this world anymore.

Rubens is 100 times the driver Maldonado will ever be, it's a piss take that a team like Williams is more interested in a pay driver than the experience of Barrichello.

Throw the nostalgia & romance out of the window for a second, Williams needs financial stability at the moment. These guys bring big money with them, Senna is a talented driver and probably the right driver for the level where Williams are at these days. Maldonado will act as a useful number two, no team leader.

Yes but a team like Williams shouldn't have to rely on pay drivers to keep them going, its a crying shame they have fell so far down the order mainly because of BMW pulling the plug on them.
