Do you rate Carragher over Hyypia? I was really thinking between these two but I just think Hyypia is clearly the better CB, plus Carragher is such a cnut

I wasn't referring to Hyypia specifically, but I'd probably take Carragher ahead of Hyypia in some scenarios, depends on the partners really.

Lets pick the sheeps ASAP.

Once the sheeps are picked (let it be in the next hour or two max), then @Balu can make the draw.

Once Balu makes the draw, @antohan you are free to name and shame!

Aren't the sheep picked already? In any case, anyone put forward as an omission is clearly not sheep material. What does the draw have to do with it anyway? Plenty to talk about after it, loads of furious preparation, teamsheet posting and such...

It is now that the place is a bit dead that it would be interesting to see what gems were left in people's shopping baskets.

@antohan

If you finalise the 4 sheeps for each of us, you can start the discussion about your "shopping baskets" and what not

@Balu feel free to run the draw as and when youre ready.

PS: If you give me a tough opponent i WILL hunt you down.

Let @antohan make the draw, I have to leave right now and won't be online for a few hours, sorry.

Echoing EAPs nominations, and in order not to have this turn into a travesty with random unknowns called Wank, Wong-Jae and whatnot:

@VivaJanuzaj/Crappy - Player to have never played in Europe. Picked VORM, gets Massimo TAIBI

@Annahnomoss - Player to have never won the league. - picked Hazard, gets BEBE (assuming he needs a medal?) else Florent SINAMA-PONGOLLE

This is awesome, I looked Bebe up on worldfootball and see who they have photographed there? Explains why he has turned to shite...

@The Red Viper - Player born in one country but played for another - picked Gica Popescu, gets Djimi TRAORE (born in Francce, played for Mali)

@rpitroda - Player to have never have played in Europe. Picked Luis Enrique, gets Paul MCSHANE

40% of those players have Champions League winners medals, good grief.

Carragher was at least a level below Hyypia IMO, pure bias that it would even be a competition.

No bias, I'm Uruguayan and a United fan. It's just when playing flying fullbacks and three at the back as many seem to be contemplating having outside CBs competent at fullback is something I rate highly.

Whatcha ya gonna do, when Djimi and Dinho run wild on you? Whatcha ya gonna do?

So, getting the "unpicked" discussion started, and considering I only really looked at two criteria:

Justo Villar - awesome keeper, never played in Europe, FIFA >30 ("Mono" Tavarelli )

Walter Ayoví - good leftback, 91 caps and never played in Europe

Josema Giménez - yeah, young/unproven peak, but can play CB or RB and has more World Cup starts than even La Liga starts so far and 0 Euro. Great games to boot, the sign of a great player, that he can spend an entire season on his arse and play against England and Italy effortlessly.

Hernán Díaz - more than decent CB and River Plate legend (ten seasons, eight league titles, a Copa Libertadores and a Sudamericana, second most decorated player in River's history) who never played in Europe.

Egidio Arévalo Ríos - not that I expected anyone to pick him, but that's now two World Cups and a Copa under his belt where he was tasked with the dirty work and came up trumps against the very best in the world. No Europe.

Leonel Álvarez - now THAT is a miss, one of the best DMs of his generation who wouldn't look out of place and was actually better than half of those drafted. A defensive rock with a beauty of a pass. Valderrama took the plaudits, but Alvarez did the legwork and still had time to play Hollywood balls. Never played in Europe but is the second most capped Colombian ever.

Alberto García Aspe - never played in Europe but 109 caps for Mexico isn't too shabby, is it?

Marcelo "Chelo" Delgado - a Gio favourite, and quite rightly, destroyed defences at will for that all-conquering Boca side of the early noughties. Not really that many wide options as good as him out there when you remove the 4-5 usual suspects. Never played in Europe.

There's plenty others but those are some I think could have held their own.

And then there's the cherry on the cake...

The Austrian...

A man that could have been easily the solution for Annahnomoss... He also links as an 8-9 with the likes of Kohler, Effenberg and a few other top players in this...

so @antohan assuming my defense is Lahm-CB--De Boer--Zambrotta with Sammer as the Libero, would you have picked Carragher over Hyypia?
I agree @BorisDeLeFora

No, not really because Lahm is solid and won't leave that CB exposed as much as others (e.g. Zambrotta if he were on the right) would. Also, the partnership must be considered, and de Boer calls for a strong stopper next to him and Hyypia fits the bill. Change the players either side and the answer may well have been different.

Hint: list the top 10 RW born post-1965, proper pedigree ones no converted ones, Messi shunted wide and such crap. Proper wide forwards, even if also capable of playing centrally.

Go.

I thought the likes of Klose and Podolski would go for the born in one nation and played for another category.

Obviously, but who wants them upfront? Klose was good enough for a squad place, mind.

Can you summarise all the hints

-Player was born in Austria.

-Played as a forward across the frontline but given depth of pools and attributes he would be best used as a RW option in these drafts.

-Would rank in the Top 10 for that position in this period and likely would be a Turn 2-3 pick in order to nail a final-level starter for a tough criterion. Probably only second to Desailly/Vieira in that regard. Not even Vieira considering the dearth of top quality forwards relative to central midfielders.

-Would work in an 8-9 with other Germans such as Kohler and Effenberg (I think, not sure, but that's a fecking massive hint FFS!)

-Would have been much better than Hazard, Sinama-Pongolle or Marcos* on Annah's RW.

It's not Effenberg because no Germans played with him at Fiorentina. which is the only team he could qualify for.

Draw. Draw. Draw.

Yeah, give me a second.

Oh, you need to be national teammates? Scrap that then.

In any case, the point was that he coincided with BOTH Effenberg and Kohler in a trophyless season...

Step 1) When did Effenberg and Kohler play together?
Step 2) What was the club's squad that season?
Step 3) Who were the forwards?
Step 4) Who could I be talking about then?

Brian Laudrup was born in Vienna.

Chaps, you'll have to excuse the fact I can't do those awesome Sky things Aldo does.

You don't say! ;)

Ribery - Ronaldo - Laudrup

That would take some beating.

Ribery - Ronaldo - Pongo/Marcos

Not as much.
