The bad (typically gun related) things happening in America thread

Leads the US definitely. Can’t remember one slaloming through swimmers in waist deep water though.

What’s more interesting is this. At least five attacks…

More people with cameras to capture that kind of event, probably.

Interesting about the sand tigers in NY, though. There must be a lot of game fish around at the moment.

Disappointing that the tweet is using pictures from Jaws, though.

You can see the one in Florida start thrashing around in amongst the people like it was going after bait fish.

I was once night fishing off of St. Pete Beach, water up to mid thigh, wearing jeans for some reason even though it was the summer. No more than 15 yards off the shore, perhaps a little less.

All of a sudden something banged into my legs from left to right, just under knee height with good force & scared the shit out of me. Immediately got my ass on land; had to have been a shark. Wondered how my legs would have fared without the jeans, if they would have been scraped at all by the shark's skin.

Spooky! For all of its relatively smooth appearance their skin is pretty rough, you'd have definitely been scraped up good.

Thread…

I remember in grad school the massive challenge it was to recruit talent to UAB. Established, high level, profs were a no go and young ones were difficult as well. Granted, Florida is not Alabama, but then again there is no Universty in Florida with the academic reputation at UAB’s level in medical research. Recruiting people down south was difficult a decade ago and I can’t imagine it’s gotten any easier.

Now I'm glad I wasn't allowed in the water when I had a vacation in St Pete Beach in 2015. I'd had surgery on my foot and it wasn't allowed to get wet!

To pinpoint it further, that happened in front of the Don CeSar Hotel, the big pink building towards the southern side of the beach. It's the biggest building on the beach.

I think that’s a parody thread
Really? Damn. Could have sworn I heard on MSNBC that there were five different shark incidents / attacks on LI over the holiday weekend.

As someone wrote earlier, the two pics are from Jaws. I completely glossed over them.

I remember that place, we were about half way up but the place we were at, can't recall the name now, was a condo block that faced inland towards St Petersburg rather than the gulf

This kinda stuff is why I stopped getting into the ocean about a decade ago.

Funnily enough that was around the same time as me, last time I went in the ocean was on Treasure Island in the Outer Banks in 2012, not really a beach person though TBH

You are right. Everything in that post corresponds to a news article. Drones spotting 50 of them, 5 attacks over the weekend etc:
"5 Shark Bites reported on Long Island as Officials Deploy Surveillance Drones"
"Multiple Shark Attacks Reported off New York Shores; 50 Sharks Spotted at One Beach"

I love the beach. Love the ocean. I just don’t get in the ocean  I’ll go out on a boat all day long.
I don't recall having been into the Lake of Mexico or the Atlantic since. Don't know if that encounter has subconsciously kept me out of them.
I don’t blame you. Just a few weeks apart from one another back around 10 years ago, I was body surfing and turned around to shore in time to see a dorsal fin & tail swim between me and the shore and then I was down in Tybee and had waded out to a submerged sand bar formed by the mouth of the river to get some shells and while I was standing on the bar waiting for the tide to change, saw a dorsal swim by… I was 50 yards to shore at that point. When I got back on dry land I told myself “never again” and I’ve stuck to that.

TBH I'm not a big fan of boats either ;)

That’s a great question. I’d be getting in trouble if I taught there
Just need to be clever with how you word it ....

There was one side who mostly originated from Europe who killed a bunch of folks who originated mainly from Africa - no color mentioned, no race mentioned - kids aren't stupid they'll figure it out ;)

You’re right, I reckon I could do that, but I wouldn’t.

How are you meant to teach about the Tulsa "race" massacre without mentioning race?

Because correlation doesnt mean causation. They were just jealous of their neighboyrs thriving. Just happened they were blacks. Purely coincidental

America is like a parody. It's like an awful social experiment to show what will happen when a country full of uneducated ignorant morons elects their favourite morons into power.

The late Sean Lock (R.I.P.) started one of his comedy sets with one of the greatest jokes I've ever heard to open a show.

He just came on stage, no hello, nothing and just said...

I've worked something out, you will only get attacked by sharks if you're wet.

Absolute genius!

Not bad meaning bad but bad meaning good...

Rapists and pedophiles have always been the most hated people in all of the prison system of any country. After what he did, it was not long before the word would spread among inmates and then someone would go after Nassar.
